    @peterdutoit - time to start solar geoengineering now?

    tom_andraszek,
    @tom_andraszek@mastodon.social avatar

    @peterdutoit - I was not considering it either, until very recently when I learned that since 2015 the EEI doubled because of a solar geoengineering experiment in reverse: the reduction in SO4 emissions from ships. GHG emissions keep growing. I don't think we have any time left.

    tom_andraszek,
    @tom_andraszek@mastodon.social avatar

    @peterdutoit - we've been doing it for 30 years (first COP was in 1995). The GHG emissions meanwhile have been following the "business as usual" path.

    tom_andraszek,
    @tom_andraszek@mastodon.social avatar

    @peterdutoit - that's right, that I think was the biggest argument against solar geoengineering. The situation changed dramatically though. The Earth Energy Imbalance doubled recently, causing the ocean surface temperature to be much higher than expected. This was because we made the air cleaner in the last 10 years: we stopped emitting a lot of SO4 which was shielding us from solar radiation.

    ⚡️ Officials from and will meet in Warsaw on March 28 to solve the problem of the blockade of the Polish-Ukrainian border, - Polish PM Donald Tusk

    👀 "We must find a common solution to preserve the interests of Polish farmers," Tusk said.

    🙃 March 28....

    tom_andraszek,
    @tom_andraszek@mastodon.social avatar

    @MAKS23 - he said the technical talks are ongoing. He also said he is in constant contact with the Ukrainian PM. The 28 March is the planned date of the meeting of both governments - all ministers, not when the problem will be solved - the problem may be solved tomorrow. He also announced that the border crossings will be now treated as critical infrastructure legally, which I think will limit the right to protest.

    He condemned pro-Putin and anti-Ukrainian elements.

    I watched last year’s truckers protests with great interest since early 2023. I followed arguments of both Poland and , even though the latter largely ignored the protests until November 2023 when they turned into blockade.

    The truckers’ protest was suspended in January, but we now have a second iteration of farmers’ protest with ongoing border blockade. The first one actually preceded the truckers’ protest in 2023, but was noticed by even less parties than the truckers’ one.

    One qualitative difference to the current protest I’ve noticed was that the truckers generally avoided anti-Ukrainian slurs and often highlighted that they don’t intend to disrupt Ukraine’s war effort and they’re forced to protest by dire economy.

    Right now we have a full spectrum of vicious anti-Ukrainian slurs, hate speech and flood of very aggressive fakes alleging various forms of filth accompanying Ukrainian food products. This new wave emerged very quickly and is accompanied by massive bot campaigns on commercial social media.

    While I believe the original farmers’ and truckers’ protests weren’t directly inspired by Moscow, I have a very strong feeling that this one actually is. Russia noted a divisive topic that emerged organically and this time decided to fully invest its highly efficient information warfare to capitalize on it 🤷

    @kravietz - the videos on YouTube certainly get a lot of views and comments. Every time in a situation like this when we suspect a hostile power (Russia in this case) to manipulate public opinion by creating fake videos, fake comments and likes, I want the Internet to not be anonymous, I want to know if a person writing in Polish under a Polish lastname is not an employee of the successor to the St. Petersburg Internet Research Agency.

    IPCC climate models assumed that climate sensitivity (how much Earth's surface will warm for a doubling in the atmospheric CO2) is 3 C. It is 4.8 C.

    Air pollution was "masking" it. Since 2015 we are making the air dramatically cleaner (marine transport) and we are getting more solar radiation.

    The 1 W/m^2 increase in global absorbed solar radiation is a BFD (Big F*cking Deal) in words of Dr James Hansen. The 1.5 C limit is long dead:

The articles they link usually objectively report the facts, but they add inflammatory commentary including things that were not in the linked articles.

    @RealFinoxy @kravietz - these posts don't help Ukraine, that's for sure, and destroying the alliance between Poland and Ukraine has been Putin's goal from the start, so... look at the hashtags on their recent post - the article itself talks about Polish-Ukrainian military cooperation and donations of military equipment by Poland:

    @waffles @chybnej @hanse_mina - this is what hateful propaganda does to people: calls to murder people because of a trade dispute. Polish and other EU farmers have the right to sell what they produce. Ukraine is not in the EU yet: they don't have to conform to the EU rules, they can use banned pesticides etc. When Ukraine joins there will be an adjustment period like there was when Poland and other countries joined.

    What's the problem in Görlitz?

    It is NOT the absence of hydrogen trams

    It IS the fact that the railway lines - notably the main line towards Dresden (west), but also the lines towards Cottbus/Berlin (north) and Zittau (south) are not electrified

    THAT is what you need to fix

    And sorry, I know that's boring, but it makes economic and environmental sense

    An effing hydrogen tram does NOT

    My wife has not been getting any work, because of school holidays, it's raining, so I drove to work yesterday, and the first thing that comes to mind is:
    "when you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression". The privilege is getting to work in 20 minutes in a comfort of a car, not paying for parking, not paying any tolls, and since the car is an EV, paying only A$0.12 - 0.90 for the electricity. Bus + train takes 50 min. and costs A$4.34. Riding a bike takes 65 min.

    Shiny new passport! And even though they cost $350, you don't get the double-sleeve plastic envelope anymore, just a transparent single-sleeve one. Cheapskates.

    I have to keep the old passport for a while in any case, it still has a valid US visa in it.

    This means finding a cool town in Europe, walkable and affordable, then spending a couple of months hanging out there, not lots of moving from one place to the next.

    From 21 December 2023 public transport in Montpellier, France is free for all residents.

    4 tram lines, 42 bus lines. Population of the city proper is 300k, urban area: 466k, metro 813k.

    Are the 59 bike share stations (750 bikes) included?

    jon, to random
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    Montpellier is making its trams and buses free...

    ... but for residents only

    The exact same way Tallinn did it

    This means you KEEP the expense of maintaining a ticketing system, AND you reduce the income for your system

    AND Montpellier has now banned taking a bike on the tram as a result

    Oh and whether completely free public transport even is a good idea... is questionable, as this @OlivierRazemon blog post explains:
    https://www.lemonde.fr/blog/transports/2023/12/21/la-gratuite-des-transports-une-fausse-bonne-idee/

    tom_andraszek,
    @tom_andraszek@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon - free public transport is a good idea. Free motorways and free car parking are a bad idea. Tax what is bad for society, like driving, make free what is good and essential, like education, healthcare and public transport.
