Wendy Carlos won multiple Grammy awards for pioneering the use of synthesizers in her music. She composed the original soundtrack for Tron. She also happenes to be trans.

Trans people have always been around. Alan L Hart medically transitioned in 1917 and his experiences as a trans man influenced the novels that he wrote. He was a radiologist who made massive contributions to research on tuberculosis.

It's Throwback Thursday! Billy Tipton was a saxophonist and pianist who was popular in the 1940s and 1950s. When he died in 1989, people found out that he was trans. Trans people have always been part of our communities.

Today the DfE published draft guidance on "Gender questioning children" for schools and colleges. We're yet to read it, but from all accounts it sounds bad.

However, important things to know:

1. It's a draft.
2. There is a public consultation and it's open until 12th March.
3. It is non-statutory - this means that schools and colleges don't have to follow it and don't have to make any changes to what they're already doing.

There's this myth that trans people are a 'new phenomenon' or that people 'can always tell' if someone is trans. But there's so much evidence to prove otherwise.

Take Willmer 'Little Axe' Broadnax, a popular gospel singer in the 1940s. People only found out that he was trans after his death in 1992.

Bobbie Lea Bennett campaigned for access to transition related surgery in the US to be covered by Medicare. Her campaign forced Medicare officials to recognise transition related surgeries as essential. Bobbie was also a disability rights campaigner.

For over 30 years, puberty blockers have been safely used to delay precocious puberty in non-trans children aged 6 to 12 years. Trans youth receive them at the onset of puberty and often for shorter lengths of time.

TransActual condemns the new NHS England policy to stop commissioning puberty blockers for trans young people. This is a cruel new element of the war on trans youth. We welcome the news that those young people who are already being prescribed blockers will continue to have access to them. But the majority of trans young people will now be only able to access blockers via private prescription, on the grey market without medical support, or via a proposed research trial
