Really enjoying the North East Autism Society’s online conference ‘Acceptance Matters’ :GoldInfinity:

I wasn’t going to watch the first talk, by Ruth Jenks, as I didn’t think I’d find a talk on communication as Autistic parents useful, but it was brilliantly clear and very relevant – she addressed a lot of things relevant to Autistic experience regardless of parenthood

I did a very autistic thing and bought summer clothes in 2 to 4 packs.

I am now the proud owner of:

  • 9 capri leggings in 4 colors.

  • 10 of the same tank top all in different colors.

  • 4 bike shorts in different colors.

  • 17 autistic t-shirts from my store in 5 different colors (they come in more colors, I just buy the same colors lol)

I will officially wear the same outfits every day in various colors when both sleeping and being outside in the heat lol

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic This is extremely organised

At the moment, I do kind of wear the same things all the time, just in various colours – but I have previously tried to have a little variety in my (metaphorical) wardrobe, probably for the sake of not appearing too weird

I should go all-Autistic in my clothing choices – some things would be so much easier!

Dana Andersen just shared this video, and god, it was so relatable 😰

https://youtube.com/watch?v=KI3E8_yVRqw

Getting any kind of ongoing practical support feels nigh impossible for those of us who have mostly low (but variable) support needs, yet are articulate enough to be able to say that

It’s hard to admit that openly 😔

Every so often I gather the spoons to be able to go and beg someone else for help, but it hasn’t worked yet

I ate the exact same lunch from kindergarten through high school.

Then I really "mixed it up" in adulthood and would eat the same lunch for 2-5 years before shifting to the "next lunch" phase.

Yet it took till my mid-30s to learn I'm 🙃

...just one of so many things I look back at and think "All the signs were there!"

On a related note: I know I'm not alone in having my missed...

How do you feel about lying? 🤥

Is lying (ever/sometimes) ok?

Does keeping a secret feel like lying?

Do others think you’re lying when you aren’t?

Are you good at lying, or really bad at it?

How do you feel when you find out others have lied to you?

How do you feel about the reframing of lying in this short video by Paul Micallef?

Removing McCarthy is historic.

The U.S. House of Representatives has never successfully voted to remove the speaker before.

If you're writing about it, don't confuse "historic" and "historical." Historic things are important. Historical things simply happened in the past.

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@grammargirl @GuyDudeman Speaking as a British person, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone here pronounce historic(al) with a leading vowel

I have, however, heard some pompous people very carefully enunciating /ˈæn.hɪsˈtɒrɪk/ because they’ve learned that this is the ‘proper’ way to say it

I don't want my software to kill people; I don't want my software to cause harm; I don't want my software to aid discrimination. Open source licenses fall short in protecting authors' rights. https://werd.io/2023/open-software-without-harm

@ben @PeteLittle1970 Excellent article!

The ease-of-use point is probably the main reason I’m not an open-source zealot (not that I’ve written any code for years)

But your second point is a really important one, and perhaps it’s no coincidence that licences like GPL, which put code first, users second, and others a distant third, are so popular with certain abled white cishet male programmers 🤔

I'm still getting used to my total autonomy.

Monday through Fridays were work days because those were the days the company I used to contract for could contact me at any time and I had to be available.

But I can do whatever I want with my schedule now. It's mostly registered that I'm autonomous, but there's still some anxiety that I could be interrupted at any time and forced to divide my focus. But no more of that.

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer That sounds wonderfully liberating! 😊

(And yes, I experienced it myself to some extent when I became self-employed. But I’ve burned out since then and can’t even contemplate doing that any more)

The closing keynote is by @ferrous, on monotropism and wellbeing

(Background on monotropism: https://monotropism.org)

Monotropism is basically a tendency to have tightly focused attention/interest at any given time, and is a leading theory of Autism, explaining more of the standard Autistic traits without assuming deficits than most mainstream theories

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@ferrous Fergus Murray is first addressing Autistic social communication styles as a consequence of monotropism

Eye contact and voice modulation can take too much of our narrow bandwidth when we’re trying to communicate

We are accused of having a lack of social imagination, but this is really true of people in majority groups: men, white people, neurotypicals

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@ferrous There’s nothing quite like a stimulus that you’re completely in control of, hence ‘restricted and repetitive interests’ (as the DSM calls them)

Intense interests can give us a sense of stability in a world full of uncertainty and unpredictability, and this too can be accounted for by monotropism – yet Autistic people’s intense interests are relatively under-researched

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@ferrous There’s a strong connection between the Autism/ADHD overlap and monotropism – in our hyperfocus and inability to direct our attention as we might (more research needed here)

The slowness of monotropism to catch on as a theory among mainstream researchers is probably because it’s not a simple answer – it requires thought

When you think, do you have an internal dialogue that includes words?

Boost if you're interested.

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@timbray @Cassandra Yes, but …

It may not be a dialogue so much as a monologue (most of the time anyway)

Though it includes words (in some sense), they’re only audible when they spill out and cease to be internal

Actually, I’m not even sure that I can think properly without talking 🤔

(Scratch that – I’ve just checked, and I can, sort of, but it’s maybe a different kind of thinking)

Was just at the most amazing talk I’ve attended for a long time* – totally worth the online fee for on its own :gi:

Nat Titman was talking about ‘The Autism–Dissociation Association’, and managed to cram so many novel ideas and relatable points into an hour and a quarter

They also gave a model example of genuinely informative and well-timed content notes/trigger warnings

Any helpful suggestions that worked for you?

@JoBlakely @autism101 @actuallyautistic That had never occurred to me

I reckon I’m either in, or just coming out of, one of a handful of major burnouts in my life: this one began in 2016

So if I am coming out of it, it’s just by luck, and I don’t necessarily have the tools to avoid it happening again

I've been thinking a lot about the effects of the cisheteronormative society most of us grew up in, its effect on queer people.
The first effect that everybody knows that that this society limits sexual relationships to straight couples. The second one that many people know is that they also define the gender roles and presentation of each side of that relationship (strict binary).
The part that not many people talk about is how they also limit our platonic interactions!

transponderings,
@transponderings@autistics.life avatar

@rick @autistic_enby Aside: a book every day and a half or so!? Wow!

I think I’ve only once or twice in my life managed to read a novel that fast – when I did nothing but eat, sleep and read for a couple of days

So your achievement seems superhuman to me! 😊
