Discoverability for the subs that are alternatives to reddit on the pretty much sucks right now.

There's a need for a tool like we had for twitter where we login with our account and find the corresponding matches. Looking into threads and search on multiple or instances does not scales.

Also multiple communities with same name popping up on multiple instances does not help the case.

And be careful, the crypto sub on reddit is about the right and correct thing, but the crypto on lemmy I found is about the bad and scam thing. So I imagine others going to appear that do no correspond to what you may thing they should be.

@yoasif Yeah I was just there some minutes ago and picked a few from the list. But overall it's like 4 subs there that I follow in reddit from the dozen I actually subscribe.

I can't even wrap my head around this. Days ago the discussion on /r/piracy was about if it was worth continuing to protest, knowing that reddit likely hated the community and would actually prefer if a piracy-focused community left.

And now they are forcing other mods into control to force it back open.

A piracy subreddit. Devoted entirely to discussing illegal activity. Forced by the company to stay open, because they are that desperate for the traffic.

@rodhilton @uliwitness will make it much easier for law enforcement to bully them to shutdown or persecute people there. The rules were actually good since it allowed for the existence of the community. Hosting and managing a community of such sensitive topic without the protection of a big corporate will be hard and will not survive long.

Your periodic reminder that if the words "Identi.ca", "Laconica", "Friendica", "Pump.io", and "GNU Social" don't ring a bell then you might want to STFU about the history of the Fediverse.

Happy to share knowledge, but will give you a stern look if you think the Fediverse started in 2022.

@craigmaloney damn, used identica so much before it was killed by the pump thing or wtv it was. I'm so happy having a mastodon since diaspora never really took off and was more of a facebook clone than anything else.

⚠️Google is raging war on the FOSS Aurora Store⚠️

Aurora is a staple tool for people looking to de-google their Android devices. Currently, Google has broken the ability for anonymous logins, and they’re now deleting some Google accounts used through Aurora. Proceed with caution, spread the word, and support the Aurora project if you’re able 🚀 More info: https://discuss.techlore.tech/t/aurora-store-anonymous-logins-are-removed-indefinitely/3817/12

So @element took part in the European Police Congress in Berlin, had a booth and presentation there, and is proudly posting on the fedi about it.

I’m currently paying them $11.90 a month to host my homeserver on their EMS platform.

My payment in April will have been the last.

It’s one thing to provide FLOSS comms to the government. It’s another to proudly support our fucked up police system.

vascorsd,
@vascorsd@mastodon.social avatar

@scy @element this is such a wrong take. I don't see anything in the shots saying anything about supporting any specific views or any implication about breaking the security of the protocol.

It's about selling open source, private and secure communications using an open protocol which really needs to be properly advertised to the right groups of people. And this is one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8rdUK1s9tg

vascorsd,
@vascorsd@mastodon.social avatar

@scy the video is relevant in explaining how it's needed to approach the same concept - in this case secure internet communications - to different stakeholders in a way they understand why it's important to them.

The way one approaches governmental entities is different to the one taken when trying to bring the common people or a normal organisation to use the platform and making it important.

Having a domain name and website for your project is great. You don't want to own the entire online identity of your project.

But you should stay away from the .io TLD:

  1. It's a country TLD that's disputed, and while it may not go anywhere…
  2. It's getting more and more expensive, which for projects is a problem.

The best TLD for FOSS projects is probably the .org TLD.
Or, if stuck on .io, at least pre-pay it for years in advance.

vascorsd,
@vascorsd@mastodon.social avatar

@alexelcu there's also the neutral and cheap .xyz domain intended to be used for most things people use .com. Have seen it used in some places. Ar least I'm not currently aware of problems with it.
