Wanted: Web browser or extension that automatically moves non-pinned tabs to the front of the queue when you select them (non-transiently). Basically the "move to the end" option in Firefox's tab context menu. Who is trying to maintain the specific order of non-pinned tabs in their browser, anyway? I'd like a dynamic move-to-front queue like we have with alt-tab window order or in dynamic tiling window managers.

voided,
@voided@hachyderm.io avatar

@pervognsen Firefox used to have a MRU tab order by default at some point and no-one really wanted it as far as I recall. Might still be hidden in settings?

voided,
@voided@hachyderm.io avatar

@pervognsen yeah, that might be an idea. I like your idea about having better tab search. The whole tab management story has been terrible for a while

Gonna share some truths that are taboo to talk about, and everyone is gonna angrily at me about (I’m going to drink this mead then have a nap, don’t bother):glasses frames are a monopoly, but you can buy pretty nice glasses from China if you have a prescription for like $20, I have like 11 - look at Vooglam ~ nobody actually gives a shit if you go to the glamorous restaurant alone, as long as you tip well and are polite - in fact you’ll get better drinks at the bar~ the secret to doing a lot of stuff as an adult, like hobbies or going places, is just asking. Nobody gives a shit if you tip well and you’re polite. You can go almost wherever. You can finger paint. Whatevs.~ life is too short for shit beer & liquor~ life is too short for shit men, love~ there will be other loves even though it seems giant ~ trans rights are human rights and I’ll officiate your wedding ~ local elections matter ~ you should be seeing a therapist~ if you haven’t worn it in two years, donate it, darling~ people at bars want to tell you about their jobs and hobbies, and they’re all interesting~ video games and D&D are real life skills~ find the fitness that you can do long term~ no fad diets~ you don’t have to know how to code or watch Star Wars to be a great IT person~ if you ever have or think you have a serious health problem in America, understand our healthcare is shit and you need to research it yourself and then get like 3 opinions minimum. Nobody will look out for you like you do.~ you should probably wear the mask~ if you have ovaries that work you can just take birth control forever and never have a period, there are some health caveats but it’s mostly sorta kinda just a stigma not to. The military does this.~ if you have ovaries that work find an gynecologist who is generally not an asshole, life is too short for checking with your nonexistent husband ~ if your doctor harps on your bmi and nothing else, then get a new doctor, before you die. Literally.~ it’s a good night if you get home safe, brush your teeth, and take an aleve~ life is too short to penny pinch instead of living, because soon we’ll be gone~ you look perfect in that outfit to everyone except you ~ life is too short for shit jobs ~ ask how other people are doing, and listen~ genuinely care about what happens to other people because it will happen to you

Just got a security alert message from Gmail for an account I didn’t make that has my email as the recovery email … I wonder why someone would do that

voided,
@voided@hachyderm.io avatar

@0xSim I have a pretty unique Gmail and I’ve got some pretty wild messages because people think they’re going to reach someone else. This, however, seems a bit fishy as the email I got the alert about is sort of like mine but with a few numbers added. Very strange

Edit: solution found, posted as reply

I'm so confused why my function takes so long to return. I have an Instant::now() before the call, I have an Instant::now() in the very start of the method, it does a lot of stuff, I println the method's Instant elapsed.as_micros(), return the Result<Vec<T>> with one small item in it, and finally println the outer Instant elapsed.as_micros(). I'm seeing an extra 7,000 microseconds between both of them. Why??

Any suggestions on how to do proper performance tuning with Rust would be appreciated.

voided,
@voided@hachyderm.io avatar

@livingcoder a lot of things can impact performance. First thing would be to make sure to run in release mode

The main thing I learned from the Humane demo, is that Star Trek comm badges have just been making stuff up the whole time. 🤷🏿‍♂️

If you don't know about fitness nutrition (or astronomy), then the answers sounded entirely plausible to you. If you could get 15 g of protein from a small handful of almonds, then every gym bro would have their cheeks stuffed full of nuts like a chipmunk, right now.🐿️

(🤔So I guess I also learned that no one that worked on that demo lifts weights).

voided,
@voided@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke I couldn’t make it through more than a few minutes of their 10 minute video. The first bit of contradiction being that it didn’t listen to voice commands except when it listens to voice engagement. Entirely bullshit filled.

State of the Web, circa 2023:

“Would you like to use the browser by Company X, or the browser by the company that survives on half-a-billion dollars a year from Company X, or the browser by the company that gets paid an estimated $20 billion a year by Company X even though it can survive without it?”

We desperately need a web browser by an independent organisation funded by EU taxpayer money and maintained for the common good.

@aral maybe servo (https://servo.org/) could be part of that?
