Clean water is such a fundamental human right, that if I didn't trust drinking the water that comes out of my faucet I would be rioting in the streets.

So when people say "ew you drink tap water? Just buy a britta!" I fundamentally don't understand where they're coming from.

wavdl,
@wavdl@sfba.social avatar

If you genuinely need to buy extra filters for your water, then someone (either the owner of your building, or your municipality) should be held criminally liable. Just spending $25 a month on Britta or whatever and then acting like everyone else is weird for not doing that is insane

wavdl,
@wavdl@sfba.social avatar

If this was just 1 or 2 people I know who feel that the current regulations on water don't meet their needs or whatever then that's fine, but this comes up over and over and over it feels like half of Americans are beholden to Britta!

wavdl,
@wavdl@sfba.social avatar

@skyfaller these are good arguments for a regular pitcher, and having an emergency jug of water (something I should do since I live where earthquakes are common...) but I'm not sure where the filter is necessary :)

Update: Google has now fired over FIFTY (50) workers for either being involved in the sit-in, the protest, or even just being a passersby who stopped to see what was going on.

Extremely nice and helpful volunteer amtrak attendant getting everyone to the correct platform and lined up to board the Coast Starlight in San Jose right now.

I feel like the new law in California that allows bikes to go with the walk signal has not been mentioned widely enough.

So this is me mentioning it, now you are aware. I already do it, but it goes a long way to know that it is codified.

Tbh how easy it is for anyone to project whatever concerns they have onto the "Ban Cars" catch phrase is kind of a feature and not a bug. Often times they are valid concerns! and it kinda cuts through a lot of the bullshit.

To me, has never meant "literally ban all cars", but when people have that extreme in mind, it's actually a nice starting point for discussion!

Like, yeah let's talk about the variety of very valid and necessary uses of motorized vehicles and how they can be accommodated, and how the alternatives need to be updated to meet some people's legitimate needs, and then trace backwards from there. Rather than debating for hours on end about people's preferences or aesthetics or "the economy" or whatever. Let's get to the good stuff

Pedestrians, it should be our right to be distracted. It should be our right to walk and listen to music / look at the sky / cute dogs / snowflakes and not worry about getting killed. Nothing about that is dangerous except for CARS. Don't let them make you believe you are the problem.

Though it basically follows the same route from downtown, and it's slower and more expensive than BART, sometimes I just want to be above ground and so I ride the 14R home.

wavdl,
@wavdl@sfba.social avatar

Also, trolley busses kick ass. Who knows how much longer I'll be able to ride this pinnacle of transportation innovation? (Hopefully forever but we'll see)

wavdl,

I love when random memes I find just hit the nail on the head. Yes it's very important to live in a place with diverse and stimulating experiences and a variety of choices to explore. That's why I love living in dense and walkable cities with several transportation options and unique neighborhoods. Nothing kills your soul like driving the same 10 miles of highway through a suburb twice a day. Cities allow me to be spontaneous. Car dependence forces you into a rut.

Just came across this quote that also encapsulates the above sentiment in a really lovely way.

"[When Vonnegut tells his wife he's going out to buy an envelope] Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man. You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And, see some great looking babes. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And, and ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know. The moral of the story is, is we're here on Earth to fart around. And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And, what the computer people don't realize, or they don't care, is we're dancing animals. You know, we love to move around. And, we're not supposed to dance at all anymore." -- Kurt Vonnegut

I think the real “problem” the fediverse has isn’t that it’s hard to use, it’s that it doesn’t fit the pattern. It’s like if someone asks “what grocery do you order from?” and you respond “My building’s co-op, I get meals & fresh food delivered from participating farms & cooks— I do solar panel maintenance and run the website in return— plus goodie fees”
“goodie fees? … um … so is that like UberEats then?”

And what’s worse is it sounds more complex because it’s atypical— but really it’s easier

wavdl,
@wavdl@sfba.social avatar

@futurebird I agree all those things are important :)

I guess my unspoken assumption was that the "problem" is lack of adoption, which is why I mentioned the barrier to entry component. But I see your point now about how, if people could take a holistic view and get past that, in the end you could have less complexity.
