"Unlike countries in Europe, meanwhile, the United States permits manufacturers to “self-certify” they are in compliance with basic safety standards."

Deregulation was a massive failure, and the fact that we let it get into vehicles is pure insanity.

Boeing, Tesla... those execs need to do prison time for willfully negligent murders.

Whatever algorithm Steam is using to validate downloaded game content is terrible.

It's going at ~0.5 MB/s. I don't know what algorithm they're using, but that performance is garbage.

This machine bottlenecks on the drive at ~6 GB/s, RAM at ~18 GB/s, and a CPU core at 126 GB/s (if you're making use of all the AVX2 ports).

The same thing applies to when Steam launches. I get a full 5 minutes of cursor stuttering and the system is unusable.

I'm not even sure what we're paying for with newer computers, because the software is literally getting slower.

I hate to admit it, but Niklaus Wirth was right and Joe Armstrong was wrong (on this particular point).

Joe said wait 10 years if you wanted your code to run faster. Niklaus said in 10 years people will have written even slower software.

Wirth's Law wins this round.

@VikingChieftain 🤪

I wonder if that's to do with a lack of awareness: not understanding the steps that have to be followed in hardware for a given statement in a program.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@VikingChieftain I have an idea:

Give students a problem to solve. Then, take away their computers. Entirely.

Yes, take them entirely away, and do not let them touch a "computer".

Then, tell them to grab the nearest pile of rocks; arrange those and manipulate them to solve the problem.

I think teaching computers/programming from high level to low level is bass ackwards.

Things used to be so much simpler when savegames were just a file, and not some hideously overcomplicated 47 layer cloud thing that doesn't have any options for managing it.

Just try to get Steam to show the conflict resolution dialog so you can tell it to overwrite the cloud saves with your local one.

I got it to show -once-, it still failed, and now I can't get it to show again or do anything but fail with no options presented.

Again this is caused by people trying to be too clever by half.

Yes, I've been fighting with this for 4.5 hours today alone (and several more over the past week), how can you tell?

🤬

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

The most basic shit doesn't work.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

Updates that break things every single time:

  • Anything to do with a game,
  • Anything to do with graphics drivers,
  • Anything to do with Steam,
  • Anything to do with Firefox.

All of these inevitably require a week or more of work to unfuck.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

Why can't programs just have an -optional- update facility... choose your version..

Instead of forcing me to run the abolutely broken bleeding edge?

This is WHY I use a stable LTS distro to begin with!

If Minecraft can manage to let you pick the version to run, why can't Steam manage that?

I don't want the absolute latest. I want it to WORK.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

I swear to fucking FSM, software developers and project managers have no empathy for people who actually want to USE their products (and possibly even paid for them).

When I pay for something, my goal is to USE it. I didn't buy it to brag about the version number.

I bought it to USE it.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

I don't care how high your version number is if your software doesn't run, you twits.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

Imagine you buy a house, and it's in perfect working order, but every week, something randomly breaks.

Doors stop having doorknobs.

Windows automatically put themselves 30% open and are stuck that way.

Your toilet now drains into your sink.

This is what using modern software with automatic updates is like.

No pay wall.

"Extremist Militias Are Coordinating in More Than 100 Facebook Groups

After lying low for years in the aftermath of January 6, exclusive reporting shows, militia extremist groups and profiles have been quietly reorganizing and ramping up recruitment and rhetoric on Facebook." https://www.wired.com/story/extremist-militias-are-coordinating-on-facebook/?bxid=5be677284b2ef40b1e6d155f&cndid=42353131&esrc=bx_multi1st_dailyext&source=Email_0_EDT_WIR_NEWSLETTER_0_DAILY_ZZ&utm_mailing=WIR_Daily_050224

@GottaLaff The paywall loads after a few seconds. Dark pattern on their part.

I understand why it wouldn't look like that on yours (presumably to do with the URL parameters and cookies you have set in your browser and email client), but it is in fact paywalled.

The "but not all Boeing aircraft" person: tell me you don't know the first thing about manufacturing without telling me you don't know the first thing about manufacturing.

When a company acts like this, it's from the top-down. It gets into -every- product, because this is a cultural issue driven by the owners and managers.

Well, how long before we get all of our doors kicked in for criticizing the genocide?

They're making it officially personal, by making it a law that you have to support genocide now (between your taxes and not being allowed to protest it).

Looking at all the universities sending cops to brutalize protesting students, I wonder how many of the universities realize that the students are paying them to do a job (ie to educate them), not paying them to be harassed and arrested.
Do you have to pay your student loan if you can’t attend class because your university arrested you for spurious reasons?

@oblomov What a piece of work, billing themself as "pro-democracy".

Some of the most egregious seem to have a profile that's basically just copied a bunch of slogans and words from actual leftists, and then they proceed to push faaaar right view points.
