How to Block Ads on Discord (Mostly) | Lifehacker

Since about a week, Discord started showing ads. I am pretty sure the default setting is against GDPR regulations. Lifehacker indicated how to disable them. I added numbered steps for readability: How to turn off Discord ads Discord doesn't make it super clear, but there is a way to disable these in-game rewards advertisements, as well as the tracking that goes along with them.

Hello, it's me, a trusted expert in open source computing with nearly two decades of experience. I wrote this article. I could not, for the life of me, figure out why my the official #Nextcloud Docker image was suddenly refusing to bind to port 80 in the container.

(Edited to add: resolved after nearly a day of hair-pulling because @eliasp nudged me in the right direction.)

https://xahteiwi.eu/resources/hints-and-kinks/rootless-podman-docker-compose/

wiert,

@xahteiwi @eliasp so how did you fix it?

(I still consider myself a n00b on docker/podman, but I am eager to learn)

@xahteiwi @eliasp Thanks!

/me makes note in a draft blog post in order not to forget this.

XZ 5.6.x are backdoored and present in many systems: downgrade to 5 4.x now; consider libarchive compromised until proven otherwise

Everything I know about the XZ backdoor Via:

FYI openSUSE Tumbleweed users, the downgrade to the xz library to roll it back to 5.4.6 is already in place (you can check by seeing the update target version) so update now (to do the downgrade) if you haven't already.

wiert,

@withaveeay @chillicampari Debian and Gentoo are researching how downgrade to a version from before Jia Tan got involved in the 5.4.x timeframe.

Since 5.3.x is develop and 5.2.x is stable, that likely means going back quite a while.

The death of ESXi finally confirmed by Broadcom

Quite a few people already bumped into this the last two days (will add those links later), so today's confirmation by Broadcom of the ESXi death does not come as a surprise. Out of nostalgia, and also since I had no idea Midnight Commander ran on VAX/VMS (I think few know), that info should somehow make it to Wikipedia (:

Sometimes, GitLab just appears silly. Like when an issue like this remains unfixed for years.

https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/202293

wiert,

@xahteiwi this so much reminds me why after like 13 years, StackExchange/StackOverflow still insists on the MDY time format (and on the "### ago" format as well)

https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/82156/allow-users-to-set-custom-date-formats

Useful progress often takes way too long.

wiert,

@xahteiwi the really sad thing is that I am not surprised at all.

Not even that it has been closed as duplicate without mentioning the original.

(the referred issue is a 404: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/business-technology/enterprise-apps/intake/-/issues/475 )

wiert,

@xahteiwi I thought I had blogged about this years ago, but probably only mentioned it on G+: the Turbo Pascal 7.0 Language Guide Index entries for

  • recursive loop
  • infinite loop
  • loop, infinite

If memory serves me right, Richard Nelson put them there.

That was some 10 years before the Apple One Infinite Loop address everyone and their mother talks about when mentioning recursion (:

wiert,

@xahteiwi it is one of the main reasons why I stopped submitting feature requests for many products: even for requests benefitting a lot of people there is about zero chance they will get implemented, while still getting tons of notification emails about their meta-data being changed without actually making any real progress.

The 37C3 talk on TEA1 encryption (used by police and military units in europe) is hilarious.
The hackers announced they found a vulnerability in the encryption, and one of the ways the organization that standardized TEA1 downplayed the breach was by saying that it wasn't viable, because it required "high powered GPUs".

So they ported their algorithm to a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 95, and re-cracked the encryption there.

is by far the best browser on desktop. Let me be clear, I am not saying that because I am ideologically opposed to using Google products. I use YouTube and Google Workspaces. Chrome genuinely has nothing to offer over Firefox. If your website doesn't work in Firefox then I'm not using your website.

wiert,

@Gargron I tried to switch. Serious keyboard queue handling issues are holding me back moving as because of reasons I need excellent keyboard support.

Hopefully @stevetex gets through their treatments and recovers well (fingers crossed, not just out of experience). After that (health first!) I hope to assist their team in addressing those issues.

    EDIT:

I can't believe I need to ask this again, but I should learn from experience. Please, please don't post spoilers ... some people will want to have a go at this for themselves, and it's all too easy to see this accidentally.

    Thanks.

As the term 'intelligence' is used in 'artificial intelligence', it is perhaps worth asking, what kind of intelligence do AI systems represent? Confident and detail focused, but naïve, easily misled and lacking in common sense, worldliness, situational awareness, fairness, imagination, empathy, emotional intelligence and social intelligence 🤔
