Sometimes I wonder how it would feel like to be an ordinary citizen in the star trek universe. Every week you hear the weirdest stuff in the news. Oh, the enterprise crew literally found god and then killed him? Well okay then. Some cyborg zombies tried to eradicate us? Sure sure. Now we're at war with an empire of shape shifters from the other side of the galaxy? Whatever you say. It's only about 10% weirder than the real news we get in the present.

When you have enough personal info about a population you can engineer advertisement so effectively that you can convince that population of almost everything. See Brexit.
With the widespread support for Steam/Valve on this forum because of their contributions to making Linux gaming easier, I’m now confused as to why people here are using Linux in the first place....
I started using Linux Mint about 5 years ago because I'm interested in tech and wanted to mess around with it a bit. Now I'm staying on Linux Mint because I don't wanna deal with Microsoft's bullshit ever again. No more ads, forced updates, surveillance and crashes. Just a damn solid OS that does its job.
I grew up with a thick Australian accent with a drawl I dislike, and have been consciously trying to change it for a while. The problem is I tried to make it sound more American at first but keep getting drawn to speaking “Britishly”. Now it’s a Frankenstein of all 3 accents and I don’t know what to go with....
I just had an idea and would like to hear your opinions: I always have to roll my eyes when I see how useless the poll feature on social platforms is. It's just a gimmick. But what if we make it better?...
I understand what you mean. If we asked like 2% of all active users (which might be enough), you'd get a pop up on average once every 4 years, which is probably not enough to annoy anybody.
I see stories about how election is rigged or that there are security vulnerabilities and lots of people don't believe the outcome. Why don't they just open source everything so that anyone can look at the code and be sure the votes are tallied correctly?
It wouldn't change how the public thinks about them. People wouldn't understand how voting machines work, even if they were open source. Do you expect normal people to look at and understand code? Also people who have lost hope in democracy and want to believe that the election was a hoax will continue to do so anyway.
It's probably more comfortable for the manufacturers of those machines to keep them closed source. Why would they show the world how they work? That would disclose potential flaws which is bad for their reputation. And it would make it easier for competition to emerge.
While I kind of understand the allure of messing with idiots, I think it's also a waste of time.
It's completely counterproductive to make angry people even more angry.

What reasons are there for being concerned about companies like google and meta etc collecting data and tracking me?

Does the American accent or British accent sound better?

How to make the poll feature on social platforms not suck

Why aren't US voting machines open source?

I created an account on an alt-right social media platform with a burner email and fake IP address. Give me ideas of how to fuck with them (rule) (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
