Are puns and "literal jokes" an thing?

kischtrine,

@misc in which way?
Not understanding sometimes?

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@kischtrine Personally for me, it’s a tendency to constantly be playing with words, sometimes distracting myself from their meaning. It’s like I’m constantly scanning for the possibility of a dad joke in there.

kischtrine,

@misc ah. Ok. Yeah. Very relatable!

But also I sometimes take things to literal when other people say something and that irritates me.

@misc it's a neurodivergent thing yep

gavi,

@misc I think it’s a generally neurodivergent thing but I could be wrong

mariyadelano,

@gavi @misc that’s what I’ve heard too

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@mariyadelano @gavi Interesting! I guess I assumed neurodivergence wouldn't be, well, convergent.

gavi,

@misc @mariyadelano autism and adhd have some interesting overlap sometimes! i find it extremely interesting (and saddening) how similar they are to each other but the stigma tends to be more fixated on autism. i guess it might be due to the false belief that adhd has a "cure"

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@gavi @misc there's also a crazy high co-morbidity rate. New research has been suggesting that most people have both

gavi,

@mariyadelano @misc yup! there's also some slight evidence that point to some specific subtypes of adhd not even being adhd at all, but rather sleep disorders that mimic adhd. its crazy to think that just ten years ago when I was first diagnosed, it was a commonly held belief by providers that you either had autism OR adhd and there wasnt much in between. its awesome how rapid things change and our understanding of things improve as stigma lessens

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@gavi @misc I hope stigma lessens more on the autism side. I highly suspect that I have ASD (honestly it’s kind of unbelievable that nobody took me for an assessment as a child. I was basically the full stereotype of the verbal autistic kid, just… a girl). But right now going for an assessment just isn’t worth it, I wouldn’t get any new accommodations that I don’t have with my ADHD diagnosis, and I’d probably have to fight doctors who think that if I can make eye contact I can’t be autistic

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@gavi @misc like it’s just so ridiculous to me that so much of the medical establishment can’t understand that adults with autism will act differently from children. Adults are capable of like… learning skills. And adapting.

And sometimes that means developing enough social skills in your own way that you don’t match those one-dimensional “deficiencies” that they associate with diagnostic criteria.

Also I still don’t make eye contact in 90% of situations it’s very uncomfortable

@gavi @mariyadelano Interesting about the sleep disorders too, since I have sleep apnea. TBH I don’t know if I have ADHD, or even if I so much believe ADHD (or for that matter, almost any of the clusters of symptoms that are lumped as “diagnoses”) is a single thing at this point. I know I have these traits that make it hard to fit with society’s expectations, and both inattentive ADHD and “pure O” OCD are useful explanatory lenses. And stimulant drugs don’t really help.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@mariyadelano @gavi Definitely seems to be the case here! In fact, it’s made me second (and third, and fourth…) guess myself about not being autistic. I’ve taken a number of tests, including ones designed to catch presentations that traditional tests miss, and at most I get “some traits”… 🤷🏻‍♂️

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@misc @gavi when I’ve taken those tests I’m always close to the maximum possible score….

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@mariyadelano @gavi Well now you’re just showing off. ;)

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@misc @gavi hahahahaha sorry. 🙈

I honestly don’t know how accurate those tests are. What I do know is that I learned a lot from a book called “Unmasking Autism” by Dr. Devon Price https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/688819/unmasking-autism-by-devon-price-phd/

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@mariyadelano @gavi Thanks :) I will check it out. Whether or not I have it, a lot of people in my life do!

@misc @gavi it’s been very helpful for understanding others!
