@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy I hear this but don’t get why it’s so important to people. Is there a backstory?

@Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy It's likely because the groups that tend to push person-first language have historically been involved in eugenics and other harmful/hateful practices.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Frankly as an autist whose special interest includes writing/words I find that person-first language is clunky and ineffective in conveying the entirety of living neurodivergently. We don't say, it's an apple with a red skin. We say it's a red apple. It's a baseball, not a ball used in baseball games.

Person-first language actually decenters the individual's lived experience and implies passivity.

@KitMuse @Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy yes I think it also makes it sound like the person or object belongs elsewhere, as though we are somehow misplaced in autism.

@KitMuse In I Will Die on This Hill they also point out the hypocrisy of "autism parents" insisting on person first language.

@KitMuse @DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy
we even say "person-first language", rather than "language with noun preceding adjective."

@Elizabeth3

One reason is because saying we "have" autism indicates it's an affliction or disease, like having a cold. And that indicates it's somehow "fixable" or temporary, which is a eugenic thought.

@dyani I am Autistic. I am an This is my identity. Everything else stems from that. I see many articles that suggest that Autism could be caused by......... which infers that avoiding that thing might stop autism from developing. One might as well say - if you don't want green eyes, avoid ........ - and presto, your eyes are your preferred colour. @Elizabeth3 @DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy
