Why large language models are not intelligent, exhibit .

@atoponce My favorite response is still the claim that there are three Bs in cabbage 🙃

@atoponce but when you ask more... it adds more "after" :)

nosmaharba,
@nosmaharba@mastodon.world avatar

@ericfreyss @atoponce wow. I knew these things were dumb, but wow.

I wonder if it -much like people- can't grasp Infinity

lauerhahn,

@nosmaharba @ericfreyss @atoponce Just means that its dataset hasn't included a similar question and correct answer. it's a set of algorithms that takes an input and returns an output- it doesn't 'understand' anything. The danger is when people start claiming & believing it does.

@atoponce I bet it would say it knows the first 20 digits of Graham's Number.

JCBlubaugh,
@JCBlubaugh@mastodon.social avatar

@atoponce but how do you know, really? 😉

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@JCBlubaugh

Actually, the proof that π is irrational, is rather complicated.

@atoponce

@mina

It's not as simple as proving sqrt(2) is irrational, but it could be a lot worse. If you know you integration from calculus class, you can learn it without too much trouble.

@atoponce

This is a pretty shortened version of the proof, more a sketch. You definitely have to remember integration by parts, which hardly anybody does after leaving school.

@atoponce

That's sad. It's just the 7th through 26th digits.

oldladyplays,
@oldladyplays@wargamers.social avatar

@atoponce Yes, I know the first 30 digits of pi. I used to know the first 100, but memory fades over time. I can still reliably get to the 30th.

You never know when you really really need a precise circle.

@atoponce

Exactly! If I have to measure the known universe, I'd have to memorize EIGHT more digits! I'm a failure!

dec_hl,
@dec_hl@mastodon.social avatar

@oldladyplays @atoponce tell me if you were able to source the tape measure 🤣

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@atoponce @oldladyplays Right. For most day to day intents and purposes Pi being roughly 3.1416 is sufficient.
