The Illustrated Harlan Ellison is the thirty-eighth book in the directory. First published in 1978, this book features seven Ellison stories paired with rich, sumptuous illustrations by world-class artists. Includes the classic "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman, the hauntingly horrific Croatoan, and the unreal Shattered Like a Glass Goblin. Also includes an essay appreciating his longtime illustrators Leo and Diane Dillon. https://www.ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/index.php#illustrated

Sorry to hear that Roger Corman has passed. Corman's influence in cinema extended even to anime: the first US theatrical release of an anime film was through his company New World Pictures. The anime film? Galaxy Express 999.

And get a load of that cover!

https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace-1999 Roger Ebert's review of The Phantom Menace.

"If Stanley Kubrick gave us man humbled by the universe, Lucas gives us the universe domesticated by man. His aliens are really just humans in odd skins. For 'The Phantom Menace,' he introduces Jar Jar Binks, a fully realized computer-animated alien character whose physical movements seem based on afterthoughts. And Jabba the Hutt (who presides over the Podrace) has always seemed positively Dickensian to me."

There's going to be a little research in the Harlan Ellison Directory soon. There's one story that Harlan re-wrote the ending for when it got collected, and I've wondered what in the original ending. We will soon find out!

I for one am not flooded with AI submissions, so I have plenty of time to review what you send in.

Here are some stories I'd be interested in, and will pay for: https://nantucketebooks.com/blog/2024/03/2024-03-21_in_the_market.html

I'm also looking for articles on pinball and vintage arcade gaming. I'm paying for those too.

I have now read Harlan Ellison's essay where he talks about getting fired from Disney. Unbelievable. He had been on the job for four hours.

If you have not yet done so, start an account on the Internet Archive. I was able to borrow a book from them which would have otherwise cost hundreds of dollars to purchase.

Over the Edge is the 32nd entry into the Harlan Ellison Directory. https://www.ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/index.php#over-the-edge

Includes Ellison's Jack the Ripper head-trip: The Prowler in the City at the Edge of the World.

This book contains eleven short stories and one essay. A number of the short stories would reappear in the later collection Stalking the Nightmare.

Give the AI access to your credit card, they said. It'll be fine, they said. Users of Meta's AI powered ad platform automatically burns, though, what should be daily ad budgets in a matter of hours, and costs are inflated as much as 10-fold. 😂

I was shown this Microsoft video in a college media class, and for many years I thought it was a real commercial. In truth, this is one of many "parody" videos that Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates made as a kind of hobby for conferences. For one thing, Washington PO Boxes don't include letters. There's a whole interesting story behind the "except in Nebraska" line. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=DgJS2tQPGKQ

It looks like Framework is going to expand their product line beyond laptops. With a new $18M investment, my hunch is a phone (that number sounds about right for a solid attempt), but my hope (for their sake) is a tablet.

While it would be nice for Fairphone to see some competition, phones are such a complex product that you can easily go down an expensive rabbit hole that's hard to emerge from.

Looks like I'm brushing up again,
Because a vision softly reborn,
A client said they'd really like a form,

And the vision, that has caused this mental block,
I cannot flock()
At least it's freely licensed

Is it just me or should it be really easy to provide cheap, high-quality static site hosting with unlimited sites on custom domains/subdomains?

I kinda wanna start up a service where people can get that for, like, $12/yr. It wouldn't make me much money, sure, but it would prove a point.

hm. I was saying that as a joke but now I'm seriously considering it. If I were to start up something like that, is there anything here who'd be interested? Would probably need at least a couple dozen people to make it financially stable.

nantucketebooks,
@nantucketebooks@fosstodon.org avatar

@amin If I could still use the domain for my email, using a separate email host, then yes. I would still use liberachat for my IRC needs.
