There are some hot and appropriate takes going around about the "leadership" at the top of major fediverse projects, and its imminent failures. One of those leaders literally describes himself as a "dictator". Well, now his technology has a new dictator, one who has no credible pretense to benevolence.

It seems there are two kinds of FOSS-folk among us. One contextualizes their technical work with a political understanding; be it anarchism, socialism, or some variant of an oppositional outlook, which posits FOSS in an anticapitalist, antiracist or liberatory context. They know there's something out there to stand against, and aspirationally, replace. I salute them and hope we can all build together.

The other, while more-or-less into FOSS, seems to be motivated by nothing deeper than a "tech is neato" ethos. One could argue that it's this second type that has brought us to the crisis.

If tech has any chance to facilitate liberatory - or even alternative - agency (and it's arguable if that chance exists), it has to be about something more than itself. As we watch ActivityPub, Mastodon and Pixelfed get recuperated into the Zuckerverse, here's hoping we can figure out a way to sustain and support those developers of next-gen decentralized and peer-to-peer social networking who understand this

jack,

@ophiocephalic the first hosts their events in irsael, bolsanaro’s brazil… there’s not a clean line even in debian camp.

@jack
Agree, the issue of where to host events is a signifier and that concern should continue to be stressed. I would offer that covid safety during those events is another thing everyone should be putting on their agenda

Effectively, yes

@ophiocephalic I think people need to divide the problem into dimensions,
& see each dimension itself,
in order to understand that actual situation.

The economic dimension is 1 dimension.

The license is another, independent.

The financing of the project's development, whether social/spare-time or corporate or fundrazr/patreon/whatever, is another...

etc.

To me, it isn't that "social" communication is a "nice to have", it is a requirement for a functioning humanity.

It needs to be public-property, not corporate/private or oligarch/private or faction/private.

That, right there, places backing it in public-ownership/public-obligation.

Preventing that, for money's highjacking/subjugation/possession, however you want to perceive it,
is moneyarchy's requirement.

2 ( of multiple ) competing-for-totalitarian-dominion intentions.

IF humanity doesn't begin fighting-for-its-life,
THEN it isn't going to have any say in whether human-life is meaninful, much longer.

As the police say:
~ the most lethal place in the world, is the 2ndary crime-scene.
IF you accommodate being taken from normal-location to secondary location,
the bad guy can now finish your life in any way they want, and you've removed all contextual-limit that was hobbling their doing-so. ~

Humankind's doing the same thing, but instead of going-along-with a serial-murderer, it's going-along-with a serial-murderer-system.

The same system that broke the ecology of Uruk, 5,000-ish years ago, killing the civilization there.

We need to update our concept of rights, badly.

Right to basic-civil-function has to be a right.

That includes digital.

I've read of hundreds of people being "de-banked" in the last few years, locally.

So, can they be employed, now?

Do they have to go to Money Mart to cash their paycheque?

The designer-prisons that money wants us living-in ( AOL was an early attempt at making the population live in one, I never experienced that ), which only permit conforming-view to exist/participate...
if they end up OWNING all allowed human digital function, then the countries have been pwn'd.

And the countries are accommodating this "being arranged into being only in the secondary-crime-scene" situation.

Idiocy.

Christopher Alexander's team, in "A Pattern Language", pointed-out that public-gathering is required for healthy community/culture.

It's a basic "organ" of civil function.

That issue-discussion, reviews ( or you discard accuracy/correctness of your markets ), etc, all are required, seems to be .. ignored at the behest of incorporated money?

Humanity needs to grow-up & get objective, soon.

Uruk died.

Suddenly.

History is .. "deja-vu all over again.", to use Yogi Berra's phrase...

Apologies for not responding sooner, there's an AP issue. Good analysis, you put your finger on it with the social distinction. Tech cannot be decontextualized from its social dimension

@ophiocephalic I will absolutely make a general-use public fork if there's ever a problem.

As it is, I'm grateful to benefit from those developing the remaining minutia of a proper social networking website.

@ophiocephalic @nm gonna give a shout out to GoToSocial devs, as people I think embody this. It’s not a fork, it’s in alpha, but it’s compatible with everything and it’s sweeeet

Agree, that is definitely one of the most interesting prospects on the horizon! Bonfire, with its strengths in organizing groups, is also very intriguing
