@darth I think it's the exact same mechanism behind social media addiction: you do stuff not for yourself but to gain likes, hearts and such useless stuff that let your dopamine levels rise up for a couple of seconds.
I'm an old-school gamer, maybe too old 😁

@darth to be honest I also tried but it's not for me, trying to collect trophies ruin my gaming experience :)

@darth I watch a lot of streamers and this is a thing that drives me nuts. Thing is, it isn't that they're doing it "for content" -- that's the first many here might think when I say streamer. The ones I follow (smaller) are playing games they enjoy. They legitimately enjoy doing the completionist thing and suffering hours of pain trying to find one last collectible where the devs never meant anyone to take it so seriously. One is probably not much younger than me .

    I don't get it.

@darth Agreed 1000%. I don't mind that things exist as like powerups or etc to be sought out and be a nice little reward to those who explore around a bit, but when there are a bunch of game coins or whatever that don't even do anything meaningful (or at best give you an extra life if you gather enough -- by which point you probably have 20 lives anyway) then I think it's horrible it leads people into collectionist ways of having to have them all or go crazy trying.

@darth I was trying to find it but couldn't. There's a whole video about how so much of modern gaming has become more about collectibles than actual gameplay. So many modern games have so little actual gameplay, choosing instead just to focus on throwing insane amounts of collectibles at the player.

It's the reason I positively ABHOR many modern games like Mario Odyssey that people seem to love. They're just collectibles. No game.

    astf,

  • astf,

@darth @astf same with me. Introvert trying to be extrovert were it’s needed. Need the in-game-time for recreation. Gaming just cause I love the games - not the loot or the result…. Thousands of hours in Open World Games just moving around and playing again and again such as Bethesda Games, Project Red or Astroneer with my granddaughter … sometimes shooter or Minecraft 😅🤗 and for sure Mass Effect L.E….
