I'm reusing my Pixel 7 with Graphene OS using a secondary SIM.
It's truly excellent work; it works wonderfully, and the phone is noticeably more responsive compared to Google's Android.
I suggest everyone with a compatible Pixel device to give it a try; I don't think you'll go back.

@stefano @GrapheneOS I switched from an iPhone 7 Pro to a Pixel 8 Pro at the beginning of this year - and apart from some lagging notifications and some missing comfort family functions that you only can use from inside Apple's golden cage, I am super content!
Apple's golden cage looks only golden from inside, by the way. From outside it is quite ugly and annoying.
The lagging notifications are not due to the OS, but due to the Google-Centrum programming of the apps, as far as I got it right.

@Mesoklima @stefano @GrapheneOS Can you tell me a bit more about this "lagging" notification?

GrapheneOS,

@cuddle @Mesoklima @stefano Many apps depend on Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging service for push notifications on Android. On iOS, the only choice is using Apple's equivalent service. On Android, apps are able to implement their own push with their own service or support third party ones via UnifiedPush. All of these approaches work perfectly on GrapheneOS without delays. There aren't only delays if someone is choosing to avoid using FCM for apps not providing an alternative.

@cuddle @Mesoklima @stefano GrapheneOS provides our sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer enabling installing and running the Google Play apps as regular sandboxed apps with zero special access. No standard permissions need to be granted to sandboxed Google Play for vast majority of functionality including FCM to be fully working. Can use sandboxed Play Store to install apps if you allow it to request to install apps and like other app stores can do automatic updates for apps it installed.

@cuddle @stefano @GrapheneOS When my screen is locked, I receive some notifications a few minutes late -- from Signal or Tusky for example. Usually that is not a problem and makes me even more relaxed. 🤷🏻

GrapheneOS,

@Mesoklima @cuddle @stefano Signal uses their own push notification service when FCM isn't available. If you've granted it the battery optimization exception it requires at first launch without Google Play services available, notifications will work fine with no delays. You can use Molly instead of Signal for much more efficient non-FCM push. We strongly recommend using Molly from the Accrescent app store (https://accrescent.app/) if you're not using sandboxed Google Play to provide FCM.

@GrapheneOS @cuddle @stefano I have Accrescent in use already, but ran into problems, when trying to migrate from Signal on iOS to Molly on GrapheneOS. I will give it another try, being a little less relaxed afterwards because of instant notifications, but maybe I will receive my wife's addendum to the grocery list before I have left the supermarket in the future ... which cannot be overestimated in terms of relaxation. 😉

@Mesoklima @cuddle @stefano Signal should have instant notifications too if you granted the battery optimization exception it requires but it burns through a lot of battery life compared to Molly.

@stefano @GrapheneOS I have been a touch nervous to make the jump off android.

How do you find the Camera? Any automated way to backup photos of the device similar to Google Photo?

GrapheneOS,
@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social avatar

@TheTsar @stefano Camera functionality provided by the OS is the same as the stock Pixel OS. You get the same camera features and quality within the same apps. You can use Pixel Camera on GrapheneOS instead of GrapheneOS Camera if you prefer. Pixel Camera is near fully functional without Google Play. You can use Google Play on GrapheneOS as regular unprivileged apps via our sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer so it wouldn't really matter much if it did depend on it, could still use it.
