Inspired by @tashen I'm going to examine various Mastodon Clients on Android, skipping the early access clients...Also, the ones that I feel are sketchy as well. I'll start by compiling my thoughts on Fedilab, one of my favorite Mastodon apps soon.

Fedilab-

The UI is incredibly slick and customizable, granular for a Mastodon app. It's easy to spend a lot of time customizing the app to one's liking. From checking who favorites and boosts a post, I've found each menu to be designed cohesively. It's easy to swipe between tabs, fluid motion is all it takes to quickly navigate Fedilab Tabs.

My minor complaint was just a small issue with notifications not being marked as read. That's all, truly my dream app!

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds @tashen nice tips and loving the brown theme!

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

@Sibshops Thank you! The brown theme is due to Fedilab complementing my phone's background which is orange.

Megalodon-

The app is modern but a bit bland in design. Megalodon doesn't offer as many settings tweaks as Fedilab. However, the settings that Megalodon does offer are meaningful. Notifications have a custom icon for favorite, reply, boost. Making it easy to visually identify each type of notification. I love that with Megalodon, as I can choose to check a notification at my convenience. Megalodon is a functional free client that does everything that a standard user would need.

Tusky-

Tusky is simultaneously modern but bland to my eye. Sure everything is visually communicated well without causing confusion; There's simply something antiquated about the UI that reminds me of older versions of Android. I'd love to see toots surrounded by a rounded frame, dynamic UI that takes inspiration from your wallpaper.

Tusky does function well and hasn't given me any problems.

The settings for Tusky are reasonable, offering some points of customization of how information is displayed. I find this to be acceptable.
The sidebar menu shows every necessary option to navigate Mastodon.
The compose window is utilitarian but useful, the toot I'm composing about Tusky is featured.

mybarkingdogs,

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Have you tried Tusker? It's my current favorite, and it works even on old hardware like my Iphone that's almost at the end of its planned obsolescence.

WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

@mybarkingdogs That one isn't available on the Play Store, however, I do agree planned obsolescence sucks

Unfortunately, this Moshidon has a similar problem to Tusky, the legibility of information is fine; the presentation is antiquated. I find this to be a shame, as it's an app that straddles the balance between functionality and simplicity. I'm getting all notifications in a timely manner; it pains me to dismiss this app as well due to lack of aesthetic charm. It does have some cute little animations for favoriting a post, for example.

Trunks-

This Mastodon client presents its UI in a modern way that isn't dull to my eyes. However, it feels like a developing project because some types of Push Notifications aren't supported: Polls, Edited Post Alerts, and Subscribed Accounts. Barring this quirk, it's a competent app that does what it sets out to accomplish; Connecting Mastodon users with each other through an app. With further development time and iteration, I feel Trunks could become a daily driver.

A screenshot of the Home Feed for Trunks. It can be sorted based on all activity, or just original, replies, and boosts. The bottom bar has all the useful shortcuts like Home, Explore, Federated, and Local.
This is the Trunks Boosts menu. You can see everyone who boosted a toot, a brief snapshot of their profile and activity. You can travel directly to their profile via this menu as well.
Focusing on a post directly gives you a simple but visually appealing menu. Strange that I don't mind this as Moshidon had a similar looking UI when focusing on a specific toot.

HaelusNovak,

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds thank you for this research. I am getting kind of tired of tusky not always updating notifications, etc. I was trying to find alternatives and was coming up mostly indifferent. This is very helpful.

@HaelusNovak You're welcome! I had fun exploring other apps, it's good to know what's available and works well for one's purpose.

    @jcrabapple LOL In retrospect...I can see the similarity. It dawned on me not too long ago and I haven't changed my toot. 😭

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds hey, it's me!!

    WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

    @buru5 Indeed, I happened to stop at your post when acquiring screenshots!

    buru5,
    @buru5@mstdn.games avatar

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds
    I use FediLabs too. It's great. My two issues with it are 1) notifications are not consistent (using nfty, sometimes doesn't send a push) and 2) unread post counter applies to every timeline, would like to have it just show a number on my notification tab.

    WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

    @buru5 The only problem I seem to have with Fedilab is that notifications sometimes won't clear, even when checked. Beyond that, notifications are ridiculously fast. I'll here the Web Browser Mastodon and Fedilab ding together!

    Caution,

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds @tashen I’m gonna assume you’ll be continuing in this thread and have bookmarked accordingly, thanks!

    WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

    @Caution Soon, as I've been debating on how to present my findings in long form writing with a lot of screenshots. I might settle on shorter blurbs as one cannot wax poetically about apps, unless that app is out of this world. 😁

    WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

    @Caution In the end, I will add on to this current running toot with public replies and some screenshots. This is the easiest way to approach this. I'll pin it on my profile as well.

    PearlescentFerret,

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds
    I like Megalodon coz the icon looks like a pink BLÅHAJ
    @megalodon

    WanderingInDigitalWorlds,
    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds@mstdn.games avatar

    @PearlescentFerret I'm going to try Megalodon as part of my app adventure...First, I'll write about Fedilab and try Megalodon next. As I've looked at Megalodon in the Play Store but never downloaded it.
