Bug? Feature?

On your Mac, in Safari:

  • Open a new Private browsing window
  • Open at least one more tab in that window.
  • Quit Safari. Relaunch.
  • You'll be prompted to Touch ID to reopen that Private window.

So far, so good.

  • Type ⌘W (the close tab/window shortcut)

The entire window closes, including all the tabs. All those tabs are treated as a monolithic object. A different behavior than a normal Safari window.

Thoughts?

@davemark Rewritten my reply several times now, as I read the other replies and came to realize what you're actually asking. :)

If you’re suggesting a simple confirmation dialog that multiple private browsing tabs will be closed, I think you're right -- that would be better.

(And not that you were suggesting this) But definitely no specific prompts “Are you sure you want to close google.com and pornhub.xxx?’, of course, which should remain totally private until unlocked.

@leoncowle Perfectly put. Was a hard concept to explain. Thanks for encapsulating it so well.

@davemark I think this is a general bug in Safari related to Command-W. I have had is sporadically close the window instead of a tab (non-private windows) randomly for years. Before they closed the Trailer site, I'd regularly have that open with a bunch of tabs, and every now and then closing the tab would close the whole window (thank heavens for Reopen last closed window!).

@peternlewis Thing is, it's not sporadic. It's a programmed behavior of the Private window locking feature hiding all the tabs behind a single closable object.

@davemark Feature, can be disabled in Safari settings, available both on iOS and macOS

@lumaa Are you referring to the "Require Touch ID to view locked tabs" setting?

If so, the issue is what happens when that is enabled, it hides the multiple tabs under a single window, which are all closed with a single click.

Different behavior from any other window.

Or did you mean a different setting?

@lapcatsoftware Happens on every Mac I own, including Intel Macs. Maybe it's my description?

Open a private browsing window in Safari, add multiple tabs, then quit Safari (or reboot) so you get the "Touch ID/password" screen protecting that window.

    So far so good?

All those tabs are hidden behind a single tab, yes? The one asking for the password?

Close the window, all the tabs are closed.

    Clearer?

@lapcatsoftware Thinking Apple should prompt you in some way "Multiple tabs in that window, you sure you want to close all of them?", like that.
