Don't understand why people are so angry about Apple turning off PWAs in iOS.

iDevices are proprietary, closed ecosystems. Apple decides what runs on it and any tech-savvy user buying Apple hardware knew that from the beginning.

"How outrageous they do that!". No, it's not. It's the nature of proprietary software and hardware. But you can change that any time. Vote with your pocket.

#Apple #PWA

eightbitraptor,

@louis This sounds like a bit of a naive take to me.

What other serious and open mobile ecosystems exist? Are you suggesting that Google/Android are in any way more open? Or are there viable alternatives anymore that I'm not aware of?

@eightbitraptor @louis I think he's suggesting that this sort of event should shake apple device owners to the realisation that they have little control over their expensive devices and hopefully some will be angry enough to invest time and effort into building a true open source alternative.

eightbitraptor,

@etenil @louis I have sympathy with this line of reasoning, but I'm seriously pessimistic of this as a reasonable argument.

One just has to look at the trail of failed alternatives to the Apple/Google duopoly.

If even Microsoft, armed with lawyers, bags of money and an existing customer base can't truly break into the mobile space then what hope do less well funded open alternatives really have.

@eightbitraptor @etenil What I mean is that Apple never sold iDevices as open computing platforms. They are closed down devices, and Apple never promised otherwise. Yet, people still buy iPhones and legitimately so for a thousand reasons. But certainly not for running PWAs on it.

Of course we know why they cut off PWAs. But that is not the point. The point is that people deliberately bought a device that is completely controlled by Apple. When you buy a car, do you demand that it runs Emacs just because it has a screen?

Honestly if the manufacturer leads me to believe that this (touch)screen is useful for more general things than basic car operations then I do have such demand. 2DIN slots in cars can be fitted with generic android radios/tablets.

The technology world is full of people who pride themselves on being skeptical of MS, yet won't say whether or not the sun is up unless a device from Apple says it is.
