@dkiesow@Chanders I literally think it is partly down to how uncool academics were as young people and how Bsky's invite-only aspect plucks the strings of ego, whereas Mdon seems like being over in the nerd lane. Uncharitable? sure. Wrong? you tell me.
Anyway. I'm here. Bsky gave me the absolute super-creeps when I tried it last summer. Plus I was always ambivalent abt academic Twitter.
@inquiline@Chanders Which immediately makes me think that the question of ‘Why Bluesky’ is exactly the type that will lead to endless debates by media scholars.
@dkiesow@Chanders I'm most disappointed in anyone who studies political economy and/or history. I do also think Bsky will go up in flames, tho don't know when. Doesn't seem like they have any plan for proper modding once they open it up.
I guess I also like that #STS (my home of homes) has a good crew here. We are small but mighty. (If a significant cohort is going over there now, I don't want to know!)
Where are The Maintainers these days on social media? I used to read them or maybe mostly Lee Vinsel. Maybe I'm even following them here and they're silent so I hadn't noticed
@aram people know but don’t care. It’s like expecting media scholars to make well informed media consumption choices which we all know we don’t do.
I just don’t see how they can put up with the performative nonsense and algorithmically generated outrage all over again. It’s possible people just had a very different experience of twitter I did as a power user who tends to take things personally. But I don’t know. I so don’t miss that crap.
@aram like -by the time I left Twitter I had been angry (periodically, nothing permanent [i think]) with multiple real life friends. I had one or two honest colleagues tell me my Twitter personality drove them crazy. And now people want to do it all over again!?
@MediaLawProf@Chanders@aram Same. People haven't learned the real lesson of Twitter. Microblogging doesn't make money. When the VC funding runs dry, collapse and/or crazy billionaire capture are inevitable. And, terrible UI changes to try to realize ad revenue will happen over there long before the inevitable end. Staying on both platforms.
@MediaLawProf@aram where I’ve landed - after a year of the multiple stages of grief- is that twitter was bad for me* …. But everyone is different and is in a different situation so I’m not gonna judge.
*(it was also bad for the world but that claim violates the second part of the above thesis) 😉
@Chanders@aram mixed bag - I think Twitter was great for my career & scholarship a decade ago, but got more toxic (both personally and professionally) since. I’m glad to be rid of it.
