But now that I think of it, does Canada make it’s own 4 L jugs so they can be accurately advertised or do they just use the US 1 gal jugs and call it a 4 L out of convenience but then write in fine print on the bottom that it’s actually 3.79 L?
Unless that is actually a 4L jug of vodka, couldn’t someone sue for misrepresenting the amount of product being sold?
Someone’s liquid here is probably not precise. And I’m going to guess it’s the one claiming to be a larger volume with an additional manufacturing cost.
Bagged milk isn’t common in Edmonton, 4L jugs just like this are ubiquitous in Alberta. That’s more of a BC+Ontario+Quebec thing. I can’t remember if the Maritimes do it now.
That being said, I’m not sure if you could store vodka in a bag, with booze being so controlled. I suppose boxed wine is a bag inside.

Good to know. I’m guessing the information I had about BC was from the late 80’s, but it’s possible it was just that guy’s specific family. I’ll have to ask older people I know if it was ever a thing here.
I have a vague memory of seeing bagged Island Farms milk in one grocery store on Vancouver Island but it would’ve been over 20 years ago. I only ever knew one family that bought it, and they were complete weirdos across the board.
Depends on the plastic, but most plastics are fine.
Hand sanitizer usually comes in plastic bottles and can be ethanol or isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Also you can buy high percentage isopropyl (and sometimes ethanol) at the drugstore in plastic bottles. Also many large bottles of liquor come in clear plastic versions.
I wouldn’t recommend using Plexiglas or acetate though. Alcohol will eat those up.
I know its a joke but one reason I don't drink much is because I have a hard time drinking enough, fast enough, for it to be worth it. I don't like the taste of most alcohol and what I do drink I get sick of fast.
Do you not have liquor in plastic bottles? It’s never the good shit, but cheap shit is often in plastic and this is the cheapest shit. As an American I spend about $29ish CAD on 1.5L on dirt cheap local bourbon. Maybe I could get as low as $20 CAD on vodka barely fit for human consumption for 1.5L. But 4L I’m not getting for less than $40 CAD
Which plastic? High-density polyethylene or HDPE(Number 2) plastic is rated for most common chemical storage. It’s used for milk and sulfuric acid. It’s also rated for up to water’s boiling temperature.
Well, everything stored in plastic bottles and containers tastes a little plastic-y to me. But alcohol will dissolve all kinds of things that water can’t, so I’m pretty sure this is much worse.
The thing to consider is: what quality of distillation comes with a package that’s just a little nicer than a plastic bag?
Every cheap clear spirit from an AB producer is proofed, or re-distilled 97%abv neutral grain spirit from a factory in Saskatchewan. The neutral grain spirit from Saskatchewan is very high quality, so, actually kind of impossible to fuck up. Some distilleries actually manage to, however.
It’s true both that the current government doesn’t give a shit, and we don’t regulate alcohol much, but I’m guessing alcohol use rates are actually not that bad. Stereotypically, anyway, the Maratimes should all drink us under the table.
Minimum pricing in AB, AFAIK, is regulated on the wholesale price of the product. So, producers are regulated, but retail stores aren’t prevented from competition, loss leaders, stunts, etc., which is what this might be.
Given that the tax money from alcohol/tobacco just goes into provincial and federal slush funds that proportionately end up being funneled into seniors benefits, I don’t believe minimum pricing really addresses the things that people think it does. I’m an advocate of directing alcohol taxes towards the harms it creates. But, try to find a politician who wants to grind that axe. I say this as someone who enjoys a good beverage, & acknowledging the pragmatic importance of offsetting the healthcare costs of alcohol abuse. I don’t believe that simply making a good more expensive is the wisest move on the policy side, if healthcare outcomes are the ultimate target.

And the concern, as far as I can tell, was that it’s too cheap for one of the umpteen ministers, and he felt that’s unfair to other producers. Not the packaging.
That sounds about right, I don’t buy much alcohol these days but when I did it would be around $12-15 for a 375ml of most bottom tier spirits. And I don’t remember any getting significantly cheaper/ml by buying a bigger bottle like you’d see with most other products.
Idk where you are getting your vodka, but low value brands in the US (Ohio specifically for me because oir state liquor board controls the proce of all spirits state wide) cost about $12 for a handle. I would agree that this is too expensive for what it is, but premium vodka like Titos or Grey Goose cost $37 for a handle, which is over double the price per liter, and those are USD, not CAD. Admittedly it has been nearly a decade since i was in an LCBO, but i know Canadian alcohol prices are al2ays higher than American ones, which is why you can’t take alcohol north across the boarder.
Will yes and no. The trick is to shop at the duty free stores when you are driving across the border to get US like prices on liqour.
They typically will have the best deals on alcohol in Canada because of the ancient prohibitionist influence on our liquor laws are avoided. Not sure if this loophole has been closed yet though
