AllonzeeLV, (edited ) in What is your favorite Dr Who quote?

"Winning?! Is that what you think it’s about? I’m not trying to win! I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because, because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun and God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it’s right! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind. It’s just that. Just kind."

Words to live by.

OT: I swear, someday I’m going to find the sourpusses who’ll downvote anything, even a straight, sourced quotation — and I’m going to give them a long, individual hug, because clearly that’s what they really need.

ETA: I’m loving the passive hugaliciousness around this post and comment! Screw downvotes, they’re digital hugsies 🤗

Blue_Morpho,

I’m guessing it’s someone who disagreed with you a long time ago and they’re still following you to downvote.

Could be. That would mean someone takes my Lemmy posts a lot more seriously than I do, though. That’s a scary notion.

Folks use it as dislike button way too often. Even if they choose to scroll the all feed, they’ll just use it that way without thinking that they could use the other options and see way less stuff they don’t like.

That’s what I figure it is, when an otherwise on topic and properly linked post gets down voted early. It gets balanced out by people that either use the actual community, or get annoyed at pointless down votes and up vote to correct for that, but it takes time.

halm,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

I choose to believe that the downvotes for this specific comment just means some people want hugs. But yeah, in all other cases it’s treated as a “disagree” button.

He and William Shatner should have an age contest.

ItsComplicated, in Tom Baker’s iconic overlong scarf was twenty feet long.

Fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s iconic overlong scarf was an accident. Begonia Pope, the costume maker tasked with knitting it, misunderstood her instructions and used all the wool she was given. Baker loved it, and insisted on wearing it for the show. The scarf was originally twenty feet long.

The scarf in its original form was only seen in “Robot” and “The Sontaran Experiment,” which was recorded right after “Robot.” This particular scarf continued to both stretch and lose stripes due to wear and stunts. A stunt duplicate was also created that was shorter and had subtle color and pattern differences.

CrabAndBroom, in SPOILERS - Doctor Who: The Giggle

This is the 4th time the Doctor has regenerated into David Tennant (Eccleston -> Tennant, Tennant -> Tennant, Whitaker -> Tennant, Tennant -> Tennant again) out of 15 lives, so anytime the Doctor regenerates there’s about a 26% chance of him turning into David Tennant lol.

ramble81, in Lost Doctor Who episodes found – but owner is reluctant to hand them to BBC

So unless I missed something, I didn’t see any place where the BBC went after the collectors for illegal recording. This sounds like they’re scared of something that hasn’t happened and, at least in this case the BBC is very happy to have found a copy.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

The article states what they are worried about

This would reassure British amateur collectors that their private archives will not be confiscated if they come forward and that they will be safe from prosecution for having stored stolen BBC property, something several fear.

brygphilomena,

This sounds less like a recording of a broadcast and instead physical media that never was supposed to be removed from the BBC in the first place.

daetilus,

Discarded TV film was secretly salvaged from bins and skips by staff and contractors who worked at the BBC between 1967 and 1978, when the corporation had a policy of throwing out old reels

That’s more like dumpster diving. I wouldn’t exactly consider that theft

buddascrayon,

That’s more like dumpster diving. I wouldn’t exactly consider that theft

You’re not a corporate entity trying to maintain a stranglehold on an IP. I don’t think there’s any depth they are unwilling to plumb to protect and enhance their profits.

P.S. Yes I know the BBC is publicly funded by the British people but it is also a corporate entity that makes money on its unique IPs just like any other… cough Disney cough

asexualchangeling,

I wonder how many episodes would miraculously show up if the BBC made a public statement that they wouldn’t hold it against them

athos77,

While collectors are in no real danger, the infamous arrest of comedian Bob Monkhouse in 1978 has not been forgotten, Franklin suspects: “Monkhouse was a private collector and was accused of pirating videos. He even had some of his archive seized. Sadly people still believe they could have their films confiscated.”

Even if I wasn't arrested, I wouldn't want any of my collection seized.

HipPriest,

I mean that was 1978 when the policy of junking was still active and the BBC were more actively dickish in their bureaucracy. These days because that policy has been so roundly condemned as being short sighted and destructive to their own legacy I doubt they'd be so bullish.

Now I'd expect them to be more actively dickish in their attempt to get 'marketable product' or whatever the jargon is however. And if I was a collector I'd know that I was in a very grey area legally so I'd still be extremely cautious.

I can't say I'm completely sympathetic to the collectors either though, in that they know they're sitting on something literally millions of people would love to see and they don't want to share it just because it's theirs.

AA5B,

The article also says these tend to be people who lived it. You see that 1978 thing as an historical anomaly, but they lived it. These were people who were repeatedly threatened to lose their jobs and be arrested for salvaging such things

HipPriest,

That's a very fair point

Mellow12, in Disney releases new trailer and drop dates for the Specials

Glad to hear Tennant and Tate are back for a little while, but It’s been almost two years. I don’t think I can keep caring about this show unless the writing and characters improve dramatically. If you discount the poor storylines of the last two seasons then it’s been nearly 5 years.

Piecemakers3Dprints, in Doctor Who Season 14 Is Already Continuing A Tired RTD Obsession
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar

It seems to me like someone’s whining like a little bitch, stirring up drama for no reason other than to get attention.

Of course, the nature of VFX means that any alien landscapes likely wouldn’t be ready to share on social media so far away from the date of broadcast.

Oh? So you admit that your entire argument is bullshit? That tracks.

During RTD’s first Doctor Who era it made sense to set a good chunk of the episodes on Earth, to make the show appeal to a much broader audience.

FFS. Why is this whinge even given an outlet? It’s less worthy than a fleeting mid-piss notion.

However, in 2023 it feels like

No. You argue like a toddler. Sit down and zip it.

CrabAndBroom,

Yeah this seems like kind of a nothing article to me. We literally don’t know anything about the settings in the next season yet. Also RTD’s first era had a bunch of episodes set on other planets just as the other showrunners had a bunch of episodes set on Earth.

ALSO…

and the return of Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush give a good sense of how much of season 14 will be set on Earth in various time periods.

Why does Bonnie Langford being present mean they can’t leave Earth? She’s literally a companion of the Doctor, can she not get in the TARDIS?

TheDoctorDonna, in Lost Doctor Who episodes are ‘out there’ – but collectors refuse to share them

I don’t think there are masses of episodes out there, but more than we would probably think there are.

I also don’t think it is a refusal to share, I think it’s morelike Uncle George had a couple cassettes stashed in his attic and it is just sitting in storage and no one even knows they’re there.

Gary_James,

@TheDoctorDonna @HipPriest There are definitely old episodes of British television being hoarded. I've never encountered anyone with Who episodes, but other things? Absolutely.

There are significant gaps that could be filled with what I've been told of, but it isn't things most people would be desperately looking for.

Old soap operas and comedy shows aren't going to get the same attention, so nobody really talks about what is out there. Mostly in poor quality to boot...

My favourite is Death to the Daleks, where the Doctor works his way through an assortment of children’s pub menu puzzles

tenebrisnox, in Favourite Third Doctor Story?
@tenebrisnox@feddit.uk avatar

It’s interesting that you come away with the impression of the Third Doctor being humourless, bearing in mind that Pertwee was a fantastic comedic actor (and, I believe, when he was announced as the Third Doctor, some fans were concerned he would turn the show into a comedy).

Three is very much in that late 60s/early 70s famboyant gentleman detective that was popular at the time (Adam Adamant/Jason King/John Steed etc) and Pertwee was keen to lean in on the super-spy aspects as well. Just keep an eye on the twinkle in his eye that suggests Pertwee’s not taking it too seriously and enjoying all the romp. Also, I don’t think we’d get a Master without this doctor (the Master is more or less a Fu Manchu analogue to the Third’s Nayland Smith).

Not being able to use the TARDIS until Season 10 IS a definite issue and my enjoyment of his adventures pick up after that. Personally, I don’t think that Liz Shaw is a good companion for him (too intelligent) and he’s better suited by Jo Grant - although Sarah-Jane Smith is best-suited to counter his arrogance.

I’d say that my favourites are similar to you: Inferno, The Time Warrior, The Green Death, The Claws of Axos and the Daemons.

Also, I’m fond of Planet of the Spiders (it’s actually pretty awful) as it’s my earliest memory of watching Doctor Who as a small child. Look out, Doctor! There’s a huge spider on your back! He’s been killed! He’s changing! He’s someone else!

HipPriest,

That's true about Pertwee's comedic background and I'd never knock his actual acting - if anything he brings a lot more warmth and humour to the part than the script sometimes would have it on paper. He certainly seemed to be a warm person in real life and was an actual spy, so I bet he really did love those espionage moments!

It's just those moments of Pertwee stories where he's boasting about knowing the nobility or like Day of the Daleks where he's poncing it up with some port and stilton that I really just get irritated with his character.

On the plus side I started watching Mind Of Evil tonight and that's turned out to be pretty amazing!

tenebrisnox,
@tenebrisnox@feddit.uk avatar

Is that the one where he’s having a sword fight with the Master and eats and drinks during the fight - just to prove what a fabulous swordsman he is?

HipPriest,

No that's the Sea Devils - I remembered watching that on the BBC2 repeats in the 90s because it was the first time I saw Delgado's Master.

There's a really weird edit in that fight scene as well - everything goes into something like speeded up stop motion for no reason for a few seconds

Mind Of Evil is set in a prison and a machine that kills people with their worst fear. The Master is chewing on a cigar in a limo for most of it so far. It really suits him. The Doctor has name dropped Chairman Mao so maybe he's not a pompous Tory after all but a Communist now?

Verumex, in State of Big Finish

It’s messy to say the least. They’ve gone all in on the boxset format, but with everyone and their mother getting boxsets, it’s near impossible to keep up with what there is and what’s coming out, and all of it is extremely variable in quality.

I’ve been getting a lot of fatigue with Big Finish lately, as a lot of their recent stuff seems to be BIG, EPIC PLOT OF MASSIVE IMPORTANCE with very ephemeral big bads that are impossible for them to describe in the audio format and climaxes that are essentially a wall of noise that cannot possibly get across what is happening.

I think that Big Finish worked a lot better when it was trying to be Classic Who, as opposed to New Who, as the fast paced nature of New Who does not translate well to the audio drama format. That’s not to say that all of the modern stuff is like this, but I’ve come across it a lot lately, and it’s gotten a bit samey.

HipPriest,

I agree wholeheartedly with this. It also makes it harder on the budget of course having umpteen ranges to keep up with which is why I sadly don't bother.

The last thing I really got excited about with big finish was the new 4th Doctor adventures if I'm honest - I'm intrigued by the 2nd Doctor things which are about to come out as well but there was something about Tom coming back to do more Doctor Who which was very special!

nateno12, in Watching Thirteen

Great list! I personally think Eve of the Daleks is the best of the three Dalek episodes, it's the most fun.

HipPriest,

I agree, I really like that one - it just feels like a good stand alone story with a simple premise and without any heavy continuity.

And it does something relatively different with the Daleks - assassination squad using a time loop - so it has that in its favour too 🙂

WhoAmI325,

@nateno12 @Bluefold Eve of the Daleks is tons of fun. Groundhog Day with Daleks is one hell of a bold concept.
