If this makes it to American shores they will not be able to keep up with demand.

I do not think this will ever make it to the USA.

Kadaj21,

Thought i read somewhere that BYD or another manufacturer was looking to build manufacturing in Mexico to take advantage of the NAFTA agreement…. If that’s the case then it’s a question of them meeting US standards. I just remember the hilariously bad crash tests where that cars were the crumple zones.

gaael,

I thought there were no standards for car manufacturing in the US (isn’t that the reason Muskrat is able to sell the trucks without crash-testinh them ?)

Not_mikey,

There are no standards for hitting pedestrians, who don’t exist in the u.s. There are plenty for car on car collisions cause that’s all that matters.

gaael,

Thank you for clarifying :)

I also expect the ev batteries to be on par with any other rechargeable battery I’ve ever gotten that was chinese made. Not true to capacity, puts off more heat due to resistance already being higher than it should, and not lasting nearly as long before it goes bad.

I’d jump all over a Chinese made ev if did mostly city driving and I could get it for $15,000 and it passed safety standards. It would still be required to have the 100,000 mile or 8 year battery warranty.

For my current situation though, I still wouldn’t get the thing. I’d be out of warranty in 4 years, and no way would I want to risk keeping it past warranty. I’d probably lose like $7,000 selling it used at that point.

Jimmycakes,

Brother for 15k I’ll just replace it every 3 years I don’t need it to last long

ColeSloth,

I work on my own shit and buy used vehicles. I’ll keep something for 5 years and have less than $10,000 in it, including the cost I pay for the vehicle, then still sell it for a little something when I’m done.

bluGill,
bluGill avatar

If the cost was in the 9k range I'd agree, as after amortizing out my current car which I paid 21k for 9 years ago is about right. I'd like to replace my truck, but I've had that for 15 years and I paid 10k so I suppose that is an unreasonable ask. (I need a truck about 2x/year and after looking at the fine print it turns out I cannot rent a truck - I can rent a truck shaped car, but as soon as I use it as a truck I violated the contract)

Jimmycakes,

Well after 3 years you’ll still be able to sell it for some amount of money. Having spent 9k might be right on the mark. China is just turning cars into what they did with everything else. Making it disposable e-waste in waiting as soon as you get it.

LeCun, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio are widely considered the godfathers of AI because they invented many of the techniques that power today’s AI models.

Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun — sometimes called the ‘godfathers of AI’ — have been recognized with the $1 million annual prize for their work developing the AI subfield of deep learning. The techniques the trio developed in the 1990s and 2000s enabled huge breakthroughs in tasks like computer vision and speech recognition. Their work underpins the current proliferation of AI technologies, from self-driving cars to automated medical diagnoses.

While I strongly disagree with YeCun’s perspective on AI, and feel that he’s sold out by joining Facebook, you can’t really argue with his credentials.

I’m eager for a good product to come to market so I can at least try it. So far, there hasn’t been one that’s available that’s priced well enough to be a viable choice, nor that matches expectations of taste. Textures have gotten good though.

But I think a sausage format is a great place for cultured meats to break into because there’s a wide range of ingredients with different flavors already. We’re used to sausages being fairly varied in taste and texture, so adding a new type is less of a “new food” barrier. Tbh though, it’s gotta be better than veggie sausages, those are pretty meh at best.

shalafi, (edited ) in Cooler parking lot with 12 MW solar carport to give 100% renewable electricity to California Six Flags.

I always try to gauge things from all angles, much as I can anyway. Solar parking lots are absolute no-brainers. I’m sure there are downsides I’m ignorant of, but damn, I just can’t find any.

For one, there’s nothing political here. We don’t have to convince anyone that global warming is real to show the benefits of a shady parking lot that generates energy. No one is going to whine that they don’t want their vehicle protected from the sun, rain and snow. Big box stores and malls gonna complain about more stable local temps saving them on HVAC? (If anyone doesn’t believe the dramatic effect of last bit, I can demonstrate with a grove of trees, a small glade and a min/max thermometer. Give me a week to leave the thermometers out there and we’ll have a look.)

Replacement costs are real, but I can’t imagine they come remotely close to balancing with energy production. I suppose we could bitch that many of these are being made by literal Chinese slave labor. All right conservatives, belly up to the bar and let’s talk about bringing jobs back home, Made in 'Murica, all those talking points.

They need cleaned. Again, however that’s done, it can’t outweigh the stunningly cheap power. Hell, go caveman style, pay a dude to walk around on top with a garden hose twice a year. And there’s another green business providing green jobs.

I suppose one could argue that solar takes money from local utilities, money that is needed to keep the current infrastructure in place. And like it or not, we’ll need the grid forever, however it’s powered, we have to deliver energy over wires. Some utilities are public, some are private, mine’s a weird combo. Some rake in the profits, some not so much. This issue has to be tackled on a regional basis, no one-size-fits-all, not even for entire states.

There are a few gigantic (to me) solar farms going up in NW FL. While I’m sad to see 100+ acres (each!) wiped off the map, with the loss of habitat, biodiversity and creating another heat island, I’ll take the solar please. And politics again, it’s a no-brainer. People like me, who actually go outdoors and know the ecosystem, would flip to move that production to parking lots. For the conservatives, I doubt they could put numbers on the table showing it’s cheaper to purchase and clear 100+ acres, taking months of heavy machine work and workers, paying property taxes in perpetuity, vs., worst case, retrofitting the local Walmarts and major malls. 100 acres, divided over a few parking lots, is easy to come by, even in my small town.

Politics, yet again. Subsidize the hell out of this. Politicians of all stripes love giving businesses tax breaks to being in jobs. They can frame it any way they damned please to their constituency; “green jobs”, “industry”, “'Murican made”, don’t care.

Sigh, I’m worn out. Someone else take up the rest of this rant… :)

snooggums avatar

When my job went remote from covid it was like getting a double digit raise if I count the commute as overtime and vehicle costs plus on site meals.

That means working from home is comparable to a pay raise. That does not mean that workers need to give anything up to keep it. It means companies need to pay more to people who are required to commute.

HubertManne,
HubertManne avatar

yup. I give a rate for 100% wfh and what the bump has to be for each day of the week expected in office. I will work in office but they will have to pay and its not cheap.

NiaTheCat, in How much is that remote job worth to you? Americans will part with pay to work from home

I absolutely will not part with pay to work from home. I will work for my regular pay, from home, instead of from work. If my job even attempts to lower my pay, I’m out and looking for a different one.

No compromises. Most of us are already underpaid when we do the job on-site.

NoIWontPickaName,

Sounds like you're sticking to your guns, that's a good thing. But also don't go bitching if your job fires you because you don't want to go back you were going to look for one anyway

NiaTheCat, (edited )

Why would I complain? I’d just look for a different one. I’d do that whether I voluntarily quit or if I got fired. I don’t work in a field with very good job security so I always have a few backups planned.

sparkl_motion,

I’m on board with you there.

They’re trying to bring us in 1 day a week right now because “The costs to remodel the offices and sublet a separate area are the same as if we just keep the space.”

Well, fuck off with that. I find a reason every week to not go in. I think it has been 4 months now.

If my boss gets pissy, so be it. I’m less efficient having to readjust to a separate working environment with all the distractions. I make sure I get less done whenever I have to be there…

Stupidmanager, in How much is that remote job worth to you? Americans will part with pay to work from home

No we won’t and this nonsense article tries to set a very bad precedent. I was dealing with this just yesterday, new job offer comes my way last month with 2 salary choices. Come in the office for 20% more pay, work from home for less. I’m already making the higher amount with my current job, working from home. So I pass, They counter and offer other perks, I pass. This goes on for 9 days now. Yesterday, I just told them to stop, I have zero interest in working with a company that tries every way to hire me except for what I ask for.

I might add that the financials of the company were north of a billion. Get paid for what you’re worth, not where you work.

ImpossibilityBox,

Sorta kinda. I was the sudo IT guy for the church my in laws went to as well as their sound tech for front of house. I’ll have to look out for something like that.

captainlezbian,

Yeah this is just the bullshit of asserting that you’re less valuable if you work from home. Work from home needs to be seen more like a corner office but in a building where everyone can have one. It’s wonderful and if you can’t offer as much money it may cover the gap, but it’s more likely to cost you someone for not offering than save you money.

Stupidmanager,

See, my job has me on camera a few hours every day. And then beyond that I’m productive by producing code, or diagrams. So while my work might be “hidden”, there’s a way to track it without me warming a chair in a big office.

UnknownCircle,
UnknownCircle avatar

This should be standard, people don't become less productive when working from home. Vast majority of wfh folks I know spend more time and are more productive at home. If my company tried to pull this nonsense (it wouldn't because its actually a great place to work) I'd immediately start looking for a different job. On Linkedin and other platforms I literally don't even consider or look at non wfh positions.

Also I don't know what jobs are thinking. Its stupid to think someone will change jobs for less pay and move into a non-wfh position from a wfh one. Those jobs should always be avoided, because they clearly think you're too stupid to do basic math.

funkless_eck,

I’d consider taking an in-office position if the trade off was I start my commute at 9, and leave so I get home roughly for 5, so the tradeoff is that my drive is on company time.

If part of my job is to look at the inside of my car for 90 minutes and then remote connect to my home computer from the other side of the city for some reason, and you’re willing to pay me more than my currently employer to do so: have at it.

HubertManne,
HubertManne avatar

this would still require a bump for me. I get to see my wife and dog casually all day. I am able to eat a nicer and cheaper meal at home as well as walk my dog at lunch. Then there is the additional environmental damage that comes out of my commute. That scenario would significantly reduced the bump I would expect from in office though.

funkless_eck,

well yes, I wouldn’t move jobs unless they offered a reason to and money is the only reason I have ever done any of my jobs, so…
