Modern GPUs are amazing hardware but the OEMs have been absolutely gouging their customers for the past few years, so it’s no surprise to me that sales are down, especially with the crypto bubble popping.

JonEFive,

Reduced spending on entertainment and luxury goods can also be an early sign of a recession. But hopefully this is a wakeup call for Nvidia.

AVeryCleverName,

Has anyone correlated this with recent trends in the crypto market?

Doesn't surprise me. I'm glad I got my 3060 Ti when I did, but I don't see myself upgrading for a long, long time if the current pricing/performance trend keeps up. It's just not in any way worth it for me.

EVGA 3060 Ti here as well, wanted to get a 40 series to keep up to the bleeding edge but I think I'll save my money for a 12th or 13th-gen Intel CPU until prices drop (If they ever do lol)

Who would have thought having your GPUs cost $700 would lead to people not bothering or lets be honest in this economic climate being able even AFFORD them half the time would lead to the lowest sales in decades?

I understand that the creation of new tech is ridiculously expensive but the price of even midrange GPUs is absolutely absurd and it's just driving more people to go "yknow what.. I'll just drop $600 on a PS5 and be done with it"

wally,

They basically shifted their price tier of the 4000 series up entirely.

Ie: a 4070 is what a 3080 used to cost. A 4060 equal to 3070 etc etc.

But the performance gains didn’t match and they still skimped on vram I believe. Outside of that new feature they added to the 4000 series (gen 3 ray tracing or something iirc)

Still quite like my 3060 12 GB….

roving6478,

I think it's also coincided with an ageing up of millennials, who were dedicated computer hobbyists in their 20s, into working age people. They would rather not sit at a desk after 8hrs of sitting at a desk. Game consoles are massively more convenient as well as cheaper. It's hard for PC to compete now.

I feel it's a combination of high prices that the majority can't afford and the share of Desktop computers continuing to fall. I know thanks to ridiculous prices on GPUs and computer parts it was more economical for me to move back to consoles. Yes, they aren't as great but they were more affordable for me.

I have been sticking with gaming laptops. It’s been a while since I had a desktop pc.

How long does a gaming laptop generally last you before it becomes obsolete for newer games?

Mine have lasted years. My last one I bought in 2014 and replaced last November. It still works and I let the nephews use it when they come over. My current one has a Nvidia 3060 with 32bits of RAM. It can play all modern games but it does get really hot.

Do you have longer gaming sessions? Any long-term issues with overheating?
Sorry for asking so many questions, but my desktop PC is getting pretty old now, and I'm thinking about getting a laptop since I can't really afford a desktop with a decent GPU.

I have very long sessions (I am a MMO player). My new laptop has a stupid thermal design (don’t buy Dell Inspiron 16 plus), but I have had very good luck with my MSI laptop. The only issue is that after so many years the battery needs to be replaced and doesn’t last as long. However, for gaming you use it plugged in anyway.

Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it

Laptops all have heat issues and will get thermally throttled and are generally underpowered. Laptops can last 5-10 years depending on the specs but the battery will probably die within 5 years which will require you to leave it plugged in to use but youre gonna be doing that anyways if you're gaming.

A Desktop is still better value unless you need to be portable. If you learn how to build your own rig you should be able to get a pretty decent rig that will last you a good 10 years.

If you need a "decent" GPU you could always go AMD. ATM most places are trying to get rid of their inventory and I got my 6800 a few weeks ago for around $450 usd (equivalent to a 4070 but better longevity)

Yep... Managed to snag a PS5 at the back end of last year, and paid less for it than my now 5 year old 1080. Everything I've played on my PS5 is running at 4k (upscaled, fair enough), 60FPS, sometimes even with ray-tracing depending on the game. My 1080 can't do that, and given the insane prices of new GPUs, I'm not going to be upgrading any time soon, even if I am a PC gamer at heart.

All this said whilst I've been playing the PS1 Armored Core games, and have just moved on to the first PS2 entry... Yeah, I don't need a new GPU for that, but it would be... nice, ahaa.

BlackstonePi,

Absolutely. The prices have become unaffordable for many. I was looking into a new gaming build, but just couldn't justify the price right now. I went with a Steam Deck instead and will probably just get a PS5 or Xbox in time.

TimberHearth,

I’m probably going to get a Steam Deck next too. I don’t plan on getting a Switch 2 and my 5700xt will hopefully last this console gen.

JonEFive,

You might want to wait for the ROG Ally to release before you decide on a Steam Deck. Don't get me wrong, I love my Steam Deck, but there are lots of multi-player games that you just can't play because developers aren't supporting Linux with their anti-cheat software.

It's not really just pricing. There's just not much value if you upgrade from a 2080 to what's here currently. Just look at the 4070TI and the 4060TIs, they're absolutely awful for your money. But if you go last gen the prices are a lot better since around this time everyones trying to get rid of their inventory atm.

I just built a Mid-End Desktop targetting 1080p for around $1000 USD with a 5800x3D ($300 on sale), AMD's 6800 (on sale for around $450 and it is the equivalent of a 4070), and a B550 motherboard (On sale for $250). You could get it even cheaper if you went with Intel's GPU but the main problem is that it's really new so it isn't as good as anything else due to poor drivers but they keep improving it so we might have a new contender.
