One of the more bizarre and gross little details about copyright:

Most (corpo) authors will NEVER read fan fiction, explicitly maintaining a public stance of doing so.

Why? Because if they confirm they read it and they later use an idea that even coincidentally is similar to yours, you could potentially sue.

Not even entirely their fault, it's just an ass situation.

Strangle the last copyright with the guts of the last patent.

#copyright #patent #ip #iplaw

ellie,

@SirTapTap I always (and still do) wondered how that worked. Do most (corpo) authors not read /books/ either? 🤔

@ellie ngl, I've often read something and thought "shit, that's so close to my idea! Now people will think I've copied it". I unreasonably worry about "stealing" common joke concepts too. Things are silly

An interesting thing about copyright is that attribution is, IMO, the only truly moral aspect, and it's fundamentally irrelevant in US copyright law.

There is no situation in which you can legally distribute a thing, but only because you attributed to it.

You either have the license or you do not. An IP holder can demand attribution, but that's basically outside of copyright law. They could also demand you don't use the letter I, it's no different, neither is actually copyright law.
