isdfoa, in I'm happy to have a Lemmy-alternative like Kbin

unfortunate to see, is making an account on another lemmy instance (such as lemmy.world) still indirectly supporting these creators? I also have an account on kbin and kind of confused between Threads, Magazines, and Microblogs.

I think an app is pretty much mandatory to have users permanently settle at kbin, since most people use their phone to browse reddit and similar sites nowadays. I would look into contributing to that end myself, but right now the mobile repository seems to be in the process of being moved and I don't know where to even begin

8ksw4, in Lemmy compatibility

I think it would be really nice to write this somewhere, because the possibilities of this federation are not straightforward, especially for newbies, and already confusing for many. I also thought, after I discovered kbin, that it was an instance of Lemmy, but it is actually its own platform. That's why every additional piece of information is helpful.

Datsourdo avatar

Yeah, there's plenty that's confusing. I also see that I can follow mastodon and calckey users from kbin, but they don't seem to actually show up in my feeds.

JonEFive,

I'm brand new to Kbin (like many others), but I think those posts would go to your Microblog tab

Datsourdo,
Datsourdo avatar

They definitely aren't showing up there. I tested by posting to a mstdn account that I follow from here.

JonEFive,

I'm reading that the cloudflare traffic management that was set up on kbin.social is causing problems with federation right now. I'm not seeing things from other instances either.

The dev from Mlem (iOS app for Lemmy) said that it’s not possible to log into kbin from his app because of some code limitations. It’s sad that app made for Lemmy aren’t compatible with kbin. But I don’t know maybe it’s obvious that both are different 🤷‍♂️

Yes please! This service has been incredible and I want to help make certain it thrives for many years to come.

@ernest Great work!

I haven't take a deeper look to the code. I just read the current version of instance creation instruction, Dockerfile, and docker-compose.yml. There are somethings I don't understand, which you might find useful in improving docker related stuff. (1/2)

kkoyung,

@ernest

  1. In the Dockerfile, the kbin-core repository has already been copied to the image. Why we need to mount the repository as volume again with ./:/srv/app in docker-compose.yml? Is it because the front end javascript is built outside the image? (and why those yarn command are not automated in Dockerfile?)

  2. The docker-compose.yml has caddy as reserve proxy. Will it be safe if I directly turn it off, and use my own nginx reserve proxy with my own certificate? (2/2)

Yep, I also noted some issues. I will be working on notifications today.

Check out your profile settings. :)

Tap your username in the upper right -> Settings

I believe they’re off by default, you can turn on the ones you’d like.

Oh, that works, thanks!

A bit bizarre that they're off by default but I'm glad it's an option.

alehel,

Weird. I'd never even touched my settings, and I was getting them. I've been in settings since to change a few other things, but I was definitely getting notifications before that.

Great work!

I tried a few things in the fediverse before kbin, but kbin has impressed me the most, and it feels “right” somehow. It’s where I’ll stay. In no small part thank to your effort and dedication!

Not meaning to complain but the boost / favorite switcheroo looked very confusing to me for most of today's morning. But the more I think about it, the more sense it makes for my lazy brain. :)

Great work, thanks!

+1 I'm not ready for Kubernetes but a pre-built docker would allow me to install on Elest.io

fr0g, in How do post/comment deletions work on kbin vs Lemmy?

I just posted a comment here and deleted it and at least for me there is no "deleted by" kinda post. Dunno how it will look on lemmy or what's going on in the backend.

LSNLDN, in Kbin user stats

As someone new here trying to understand things… what’s the difference between kbin and lemmy? I thought I saw in one place they’re the same but it seems not? Haha so much to learn, big noob here

fr0g,

They are not the same, but they can talk to each other. Both aim to create a reddit-like experience with groups, threads and votes. And both use the ActivityPub protocol, meaning that not only can different kbin (or lemmy) servers talk to each other and you can see groups, conversations etc from other servers on your own (if both servers agree to talk to each other), they can also talk to entirely different services. So you can interact with mastodon posts in kbin and kbin groups on lemmy etc.

So they both follow the same basic rules of communication, but otherwise are fairly different. Written in different programming languages (I thinm), different features implemented, different UI.

So for the most part, in terms of what conversations you want to take part in, it mostly doesn't matter which you use. But in terms of user experience and features, there can be big differences so you can try out both and see what suits you better.

LSNLDN,

Ok I think I understand better thanks for taking the time to explain. One thing that I don’t fully understand- I have a mastodon login, a beehaw login, and a kbin login. Do I need all of these? If you want to interact with eg a kbin post as a beehaw user do you login with beehaw account on kbin or do you interact with kbin posts via the beehaw site and ui?

Similar to what @fr0g said. One of the common misconceptions about the fediverse seems to be "I have a Twitter account so I should be able to log into FB, IG, YT, Reddit, etc with it." In reality it's kinda the opposite. You can only log into the server you signed up on, but your Twitter account can talk to and follow accounts on YT, FB, IG, Reddit, etc. That's the magic of the Fediverse.

I ended up with maybe a dozen accounts as I explored, but more or less settled on a Calckey account (similar to Mastodon which I still have, but don't use), a kbin account (technically still have a lemmy.ml also) and a Pixelfed account (IG).

fr0g,

Each account you have is tied to your server. So you can't log into kbin with your mastodon account and you can only use your mastodon account for mastodon app (although some apps support several services).
But you can use your mastodon account to comment on a beehaw or kbin thread. And you can use kbin to follow mastodon accounts in the typical timeline style (don't think lemmy/beehaw can do that though)

Do you need all three? Probably not. Mastodon is really best for twitter style interactions, lemmy/beehaw for reddit style discussions. Kbin can actually do both in a reasonable manner, but is still the earliest in development, while Mastodon is the most mature with some cool extra features.
Personally, I think three accounts is probably too much in the long run (I have a Masto and a kbin account) but you can take your time and see what experience you like best.
