My biggest problem with kbin

The biggest problem with kbin is honestly quite simple, but I don't people is talking about is the fact that finding the magazines that I'm subscribed to is in Settings > Subscribed, on Reddit, it's literally in the top bar, I don't get why it's buried in settings. Another thing is why is my home page full of posts from magazines that I'm not subscribed to and mostly not intrested in? I know I can do /sub to access the magazines feed, but why is hidden and why isn't it just the default?

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

If you go into settings you can set /sub to be your default. in the top right if you check the list icon you can see the subscribed/all options.

kbin just has weird defaults apparently.

DazzleDot,
DazzleDot avatar

And with this I present another issue. I'd like to set the interface language to English. So now I don't have a "setting", but something else. Sure I can find it, but still I'd like to have it to English.

DazzleDot,
DazzleDot avatar

Found it: https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/2428/kbin-Translations#entry-comment-50738

At the bottom of the screen(?) select you own language first(?), then select English.

10A,

Defaults need to be fixed so newcomers have a good UX. Most normal people don't adjust any settings on a website; they either like what they get out of the box, or they find a better service.

mookman288,
mookman288 avatar

While kbin is relatively new and traffic is lower, I would prefer to "opt-out" of magazines on the frontpage. I'm sure at some point it'll make more sense for me to just switch to my subscribed magazines, when they're well populated with traffic.

frostcrystal,

I had been looking for the Subscribed option! Thank you :)

fuocoebenzina,
fuocoebenzina avatar

So have I! Thanks clygro:) And thanks to the people on this thread who've mentioned kbin-it, because I think I need that...

AlteredStateBlob,
AlteredStateBlob avatar

I can't quite find that option. Could you elaborate a bit on which settings that would be? The cogwheel doesn't have anything with "/sub" or default, really. The settings on the account don't offer that either, but I might just be really blind.

missmystique,
missmystique avatar

@AlteredStateBlob When you go to settings, it should take you straight to General -> Appearance. Directly under "Appearance" you should see a drop down that's probably set to "All" at the moment. You can change the drop down to Subscriptions, Favourites, or Moderated. If you select Subscriptions, then clicking on the top left kbin icon on desktop should take you to https://kbin.social/sub.

On mobile, however, I still have the problem where the top left kbin icon only opens the hamburger menu, and the home button I see from there takes me to kbin.social. I feel like that worked as expected above when I first joined? But honestly not sure if that's a bug or a feature.

AlteredStateBlob,
AlteredStateBlob avatar

Thanks, yeah. The default setting is "Homepage" and I did not recognize it being a dropdown. Got it now, thank you! :)

SlippinKimmy,

@AlteredStateBlob If you go to your user name and click settings, the first thing you see should say Appearances. Click the dropdown menu and it should give you the options of what to display on your homepage (all, subscribed, or moderated). I am not sure if this is what you were asking. Also this is my first comment on kbin and I am still trying to figure it out as well.

@clygro @Otome@kbin.social

AlteredStateBlob,
AlteredStateBlob avatar

Good god, yeah, that was exactly it. Thanks. It just says "Homepage" in the default setting and I simply did not realize it was a dropdown.

neokabuto,

That wasn't working on mobile for me. The setting is updated, but the homepage still does all for me.

Teal,
Teal avatar

@clygro Another option to get you to the same subscriptions list is to click the settings cog wheel (top right of screen and under username), in the list of options put "Show top bar" to yes. This will give you tabs at the top of the screen for All, Subscribed, Moderated, Favorites. It also shows which magazine you're in by highlighting it.

maskapony,

It makes sense to do it that way otherwise everyone would see an empty page when they first signed up.

At least this way you can use the home page for discovery initially and once that gets too noisy use /sub as your homepage.

10A,

It only makes sense until the user has subscribed to anything. Once there's one or more subscriptions, nothing else should appear on the homepage.

clygro,

well then it can be random, but when logged in, it should show subscribed magazines on the homepage by default

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

makes sense. another weird default is putting the comment box for a thread at the bottom of the thread, rather than the top lol. but a userstyle sheet fixes that. also notifications are turned off by default which is also weird.

lots of unfamiliar defaults lol.

Nougat,

Where might I find and apply such a stylesheet, and is there also one for making threads collapsible?

Amongog,
Amongog avatar

All the information @Shortcake is compiled in the magazine m/kbinStyles.
You'll find additional goodies there, and if you come up with the modifications, you're welcome to post them!

speck,

I went to click that link to kbinStyles and it didn't seem to work, but did bring up other UI issues:

When I search for it, it doesn't show up unless I first select magazines. Search should be global, unless your first pick a category to narrow your results.

Then there's the case sensitivity issue mentioned elsewhere.

Finally, on a phone the subscribe button is off-screen. You have to swipe over to see it. So for a hot minute it seemed like there was no method to subscribe.

Amongog,
Amongog avatar

Yeah, I tried to link it from my phone. I'll fix it later when i get home.

I agree on a global search function. I spend way too much time wondering why no magazine showed up.

And yes, while the mobile experience is usable, it still needs some tuning to make it more accessible.

There is something called kbin-it which will allow you to have it up top. https://userstyles.world/style/10288/kbin-it download styles and then install the script. Only works on desktop afaik

I think that's half based on forum layouts, and half to encourage you to read (and engage with) the conversation before throwing out an idea that might be the same as others'.

CynAq,
CynAq avatar

They are basically the same reason. Forums put the comment box at the bottom so people at least glance through the page before commenting, in hopes of reducing duplicate comments.

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

yup, entirely understandable. but once threads start getting very long you often never end up scrolling to the bottom.

again, there's obviously reasons to the decisions, it's just unfamiliar to use ex-reddit folk.

Naich,
Naich avatar

My biggest problem is that there is no way to go straight to the link from the list - you have to go into the post first.

ovalseven,

I don't follow. What link in your post feed are you not able to find?

Naich,
Naich avatar

It's not a case of not finding it, it's that clicking a link in the feed opens up the comments page rather than the link.

ovalseven,

Ok. Links to news articles. I see what you mean now. I agree.

exohuman,
exohuman avatar

Same thing with images. It would be nice if the image just popped up once I click it.

kenja_time,

I noticed the small image icon in the bottom-left of Image posts does open the image below the post, but it's not ideal. Especially for users like me that use Imagus for quick image viewing

Thank you! I never noticed that.

ElcaineVolta,
ElcaineVolta avatar

not sure if this is what you're looking for, but you can try turning on "Show top bar" in settings, that way 'Subscribed' is always at the top of the page.

Anon2971,
Anon2971 avatar

Yeah same here. This feels like a somewhat key usability feature. I'll see if there's a way I can pass this feature suggestion onto the developer.

Update: Probably best to add feature requests to the kbin repo.

Z______,

If there's one basic feature that I liked about Reddit is that if I clicked on a post it would automatically open the post in a new tab. Not the biggest fan of having to make sure I manually open the post in another tab unless I want to risk losing my place in the post feed.

riskable,
riskable avatar

Pro tip: Never trust websites to open links in a new tab VS in the current tab. Instead, middle click on the links you want to open in a new tab and just assume that every link will open in the current tab.

sheco,

control+click works too.

Kichae,

*cough* https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues *cough*

It's way, way, way better for these hundred different feature request posts to actually just be posts to the project's issues board.

ernest,

I have my eye on it, I've seen that related pull requests have also been submitted. It will be improved in some way soon.

Would it be possible add an option to turn off the jump to the top button in the settings? i use the mobile site and i don't want an arrow burned into my screen like the refresh button from my reddit app already is.

Timwi,
Timwi avatar

I wish there was a way to do the reverse: show all magazines except for those I explicitly unsubscribe from. Otherwise I will miss out on a lot of new magazines as they are made that I could be interested in.

567PrimeMover,
567PrimeMover avatar

Would blocking a magazine accomplish what you're aiming to do? It should be the "🚫" sign next to the "subscribe" button. Then when you're browsing all, the blocked magazine (hopefully) won't show up

Timwi,
Timwi avatar

I mean... technically, I suppose it does the same thing on the all page... but blocking a magazine feels like something I should do if I think it’s offensive or damaging, not if it’s just something I’m just not generally interested in...

discodoubloon,
discodoubloon avatar

Having a whitelist and a blacklist seems like it would be really smart for federation. You could chain hashtags and specific users into it too. Once Lemmy and others start showing up managing content is going to be critical.

missmystique,
missmystique avatar

@Timwi Do you mean like see an r/All type page, without magazines that you have blocked? Or you want the r/All type page to not have the magazines that you're subscribed to?

@clygro

Timwi,
Timwi avatar

I suppose blocking a large number of magazines I’m not interested in could work, assuming the software doesn’t impose a limit on the number of magazines I can block. But it feels like blocking should be something I should only use in extreme cases, like, “I definitely don’t want to see any of this ever again”, as opposed to just “I’m just not interested in it enough to follow it regularly”.

What happens if I block a magazine but later follow a link to a posting in it?

tjikko,

Agreed. My bigger issue is with the logic for compiling listings. If you are subscribed to a magazine that is much more active than the others, the big magazine completely dominates and you never see anything else. That's a tricky sort of algorithm to fine-tune, but in the meantime I may have to unsubscribe from this meta mag if I ever want to see any other content on my front page.

UrbenLegend, (edited )

Agreed. A lot of QoL features still need to be added. I want a sidebar with my subscribed magazines for easy access. Also the fact that I have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the comments section to post in a thread is annoying.

Monitor343,
Monitor343 avatar

Lets all remember that Kbin is not reddit. We can't expect it to be a drop in replacement over night. It will take time to develop into a smooth user experience.

necrophagist,

my biggest issue is that you can't save or bookmark posts...that is badly needed

AmericanScream,

I think the biggest problem right now is that Magazine names/URLs are CASE-SENSITIVE. This is obviously a bug.

Midgitsu,

I noticed that looking at my profile doesn't sort from newest to oldest, it does oldest to newest. Default the sort to newest to oldest or at least provide a toggle.

rodhlann,
rodhlann avatar

My biggest gripe is it's hard to tell when someone has responded to your comment on a post. Unless someone @s you it doesn't show up as a notification, and if I go look through my own profile and posts there's no indication as to whether or not someone replied to my comment.

This doesn't seem to be as big of a problem with Microblogging because it automatically @s the person you're responding to

rodhlann,
rodhlann avatar

Turns out there's setting for all reply notifications that are off by default. Weird choice, but glad they're there

neokabuto,

And the settings are confusing, especially if you're used to Reddit terminology.

also, you can do this, as shown in picture. there is a gear icon on the right that toggles some settings, this is called 'top bar'
setting

tjikko,

This is better, though what I would like is for subscribed magazines to be in the top bar.

tal,
tal avatar

Enable the top bar, then click on "Subscribed". Second item from the left.

Joker,

You can change both in settings. The option to change the default feed is in the main settings. There’s also a little gear icon towards the bottom. Click that and you get options to change colors. Scroll down and you have options to pin the navigation bar and the top bar. Check both of those and it will work the way you want.

joan,

AFAICT The top bar shows a list of all magazines instead of only the ones you are subscribed to.

Agree, a faster way to switch between "all posts" and "posts in subscribed magazines" would be welcome!

CodingAndCoffee,

That exists. If you click the gear icon (scroll near the bottom on mobile, or top right section on desktop) you can toggle some settings. The top bar is what you want.
