is really giving me hope that maybe, just maybe, I can build a meaningful music community. Again. For like the 27th year. lol.

Open source radio. Decentralized music sharing/streaming. People building their own radio shows. I can do this. I hope you guys will help me along the way.

    @SrRochardBunson @ErickaSimone @radiofreefedi this is so relevant to my interests. my son THING2 is part of a rock band and they're doing their shlepping all around NYC playing their music. he writes and composes the majority of it. am a web developer and was just wondering if there was a FLOSS bandcamp i could setup for them. the other alternative i've been thinking of is either pixelfed (cuz so many artists use instagram) or even mastodon (but i just don't like that it doesn't oembed easily)

    @SrRochardBunson @blogdiva @ErickaSimone the present nor the future will or should be one silo. We like to reckon it's a buffet.

    As friends, artists, listeners we might meet somewhere that we can tolerate for discovery, support in the formats artists can manage and where we can maximise impact and directness, and share the media away from thieving corporations where we can celebrate agency data sovereignty for artist and supporter! That may be a combo of things as we all navigate the hellscape.

    If anyone's interested, there's a aggregator I've been working on in spare time.

    https://ten-thousand-sounds.com

    It's very simple & not really scaleable at all. But very interested in trying to promote search, discovery & indexing of the bandcamp alternatives.

    (Everybody please stick RSS into your music sharing projects! It is brilliant)

    Also the faircamp webring run by @keefmarshall is fab and lots of fun to be part of!

    @ErickaSimone
    This is a huge opportunity for both independent musicians and the fediverse that isn't getting enough attention. Suggestion that some of the nervous energy being directed at the question of promoting the migration of journalists to the fedi should be redirected to the possibility of enabling community for musicians and artists

    ErickaSimone,
    @ErickaSimone@mastodon.social avatar

    Okay so I’ve been thinking about this forever. If you can bring the artists and creators to masto, the journalism will follow.

    I adore you for mentioning this. There’s always an opportunity for massive growth for any platform using music, but licensing and other issues always deters. It’s 2023. It shouldn’t deter at this point.

    @ophiocephalic

    @ErickaSimone
    You're absolutely right on the journalism point. There's so much raw material in the fediverse for musicians to work with. PeerTube to share videos, for example. Audio-clip compatibility, for sharing excepts without the hassle of wrapping them in video. And yes, the streaming radio and funkwhale playlist sharing.

    Faircamp is also interesting. I wonder if it could be extended with some kind of artist-owned cooperative aggregator site that federates faircamp listings in one collection, to help with discovery and style-searching; and also, an ActivityPub-enabled blog like bandcamp had.

    Anyway, all solidarity to you and allies, these are exciting prospects!

    @ophiocephalic @ErickaSimone

    faircamps have rss

    There is a budding faircamp web ring: https://webring.key13.uk/

    Some testing of aggregating faircamp feeds: https://reverb10000.com/aggregator.html

    Not everything needs ActivityPub smashed into it straight away. We all out here trying to navigate the mess and it's been a joy seeing artist comradery and helping each other feel OK(er) about trying some things that might be experimental but definitely organic, less "push" style discovery and toward better agency.

    @ErickaSimone I guess that the only thing you'd need on top is tracking listeners by country & what was played such that you can work out royalties for anything you play?

    (Sorry! Worked in music streaming a few years back & royalties is still something I think of a lot)

    ErickaSimone,
    @ErickaSimone@mastodon.social avatar

    @thisismissem hey Emelia. So you’re a genius and you’re asking the questions asking myself before I jump into this. Definitely tracking, and definitely finding some way of crediting the musician for licensing use. Which is a whole other beast, but a beast I happen to be studying at berklee. lol.

    I guess it’s about what platform will let me play the music of my choice. Openly. Is there a live format I can do this in. I hate that clubhouse failed. I’d love a live audio situation.

    thisismissem,
    @thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

    @ErickaSimone so if it's your own compositions and works, then it's certainly much simpler

    Though there's not currently any real "pay to play" fediverse models — the best is maybe "followers only" posts and charging access to that? The most common thing is crowdfunding type efforts.

    Though, crowdfunding tends to be at complete odds with music royalties.

    I think it'd end up being a discreet platform, maybe funkwhale, I'm not sure?

    thisismissem,
    @thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

    @ErickaSimone As for live formats, technically, HLS and DASH are probably the options to consider, though there's all the transcoding if "live”, you could probably get somewhere with Icecast, which is common for radio stations (it can track listeners over time, and then you just need to track the queue)
