If the British government recovered fragments of the sword Excalibur and decided to have it re-forged for nation-building reasons, how would they go about it?
I have heard some “decent” (meaning, believable) AI-generated songs, but most of them are cringe in some way.
And none rise to the level of art, because art is about human emotion and experience. At best, it’s mediocre pablum, a synthesized average meant to mimic what’s “typical” in whatever genre. It’s bland content, even when it could pass as human (content, not art).
It’s sad/funny how “prompt engineers” are sharing it as if it’s something to be proud of, tho.
I got this when I was a kid. Salter Science Electronics Connect Up and Switch On. It was brilliant. Projects included a burglar alarm, synthesizer where the notes were produced by different lengths & resistances of pencil lines on paper, a crystal radio which required no batteries & was powered by the radio waves themselves, and an actual working radio transmitter.
Yeah it was great. I really loved the transmitter. iirc, the manual said you should connect a wire from the circuit to the radio arial to comply with radio regulations, but it was written in a 'we have to tell you this, but it will still work if you happened to, you know, accidentally not connect it' way.
I think I eventually broke it by burning out one of the components. Regrettably, it didn't result in me becoming an electronics genius or anything
Anyone know of a fedi or at least free-ish alternative to SoundCloud? I like posting my stuff for archival and for whatever folks might enjoy listening to my brand of self indulgent improv, but I just have no desire to engage with that site anymore. What are the cool Indieweb kids using these days?
Are you thinking of self hosting, or signing up for a music service of some kind?
For self hosting there's #funkwhale, which has fediverse integration built in. I tried it myself and it didn't quite fit for me though.
A lot of musicians on here really like self hosting with #faircamp (and I use it myself and think it's great) but faircamp doesn't have activitypub, so there's no fediverse integration.
Yeah, fair enough! I don't think there's anything that really fills the same niche as soundcloud yet (thinking kind of both casual to serious audio posting with the big community aspect). That said, personally I really enjoy self hosting, sharing stuff, listening to others' music and chatting about it all with people on here.
Yeah that code is still very rough and ready though I tried to tidy it up a bit.
And thanks for the listen, I kind of got lucky there after experimenting with it a bit in a DAW, it was one of those that just came together. One problem with the code as it is, it tends to produce very regular plodding rhythms, so you've got to kind of disguise that with effects, patches with slow attack, pads etc
Just released a new short album / EP - "Trepanned Dandelion". Goes from tuneful electronic noise to electronic drone. Lots of microtuning. If you like such things, have a listen and hope you enjoy!
(There's still 5 days of Christmas left, I think he's still around someplace. PS no disrespect Santa, thank you for the BMX and Salter Science Introduction to Electronics Kit)
Yeah it's a lot of fun. Think you'll have to look into installing python if you want to use it though. Once python's installed, it's just four or five commands to set things up to launch it... I'll write a full setup guide when I've got the chance. 🖖
If you want to play with it, it's in this repository (example 7). The one in the repo is slightly older and doesn't show the original image, but otherwise it's just the same. It's a bit rough and ready and only really tested on my system so there may be bugs, use at your own risk and all that...
Not sure yet! I'll have a go with that one in a DAW tomorrow, hopefully. They tend to sound a bit plodding if you just play the midi file, because there'll be a note on pretty much every step, so need some synth VSTs with glide / slow attack type sounds to reduce that.
OK here it is... In my mind the music is suggestive of the scene in the image. People gather to watch the fireworks. They chat as cicadas chirp in the trees. Then the fireworks suddenly brighten the sky. Even the cicadas fall silent for a moment, but they start chirping again soon enough.
Seen as people may want to add pages to their faircamp site, I've made a blank template for a Faircamp page. The various bits of the page, including the nav bar, can be edited with a search and replace. This might be the easiest way to do it.
Oh I see, fair enough! I do that myself with a bash script & sed to search and replace the audio file links in the html of all the subfolders because I host them on separate storage.
That's here if it helps at all... it will only work with a flat site structure though.
