I'm all for criticising and , but this post is seriously misleading.

The data described in the privacy policy is what is necessary to federate comments. Whether this implies they can then use this data for other purposes is still up for debate.

Doing so would likely be illegal in the EU though.

@jmaris it would indeed be illegal for them to profile EU non-threads users based on data collected on the fediverse.

@toon @jmaris Illegal but profitable?

@holsta remind me what the max fine is under the GDPR?

@jmaris having taken a better look it actually Seems clear that they will not use fediverse users data for profiling and targeting.

Sadly the post making the claim has garnered tonnes of traction. It would appear the fediverse isn't immune to misinformation either

petrescatraian,

@jmaris hopefully they keep their word

JensJot,

@jmaris The original tooter (?) acknowledges that the link seems to show different documents for US or EU users, respectively, see below.
The question is, will they stick to their own rules?

Apologies. Most discussion was concerning the Supplemental Privacy Policy: https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944 which was the correct link. As explained above this link seems to connect to different documents for EU and US users.”

@JensJot that explains a lot

@jmaris mastodon does not collect ANY data. If your theory about data collection needed for federate comment is correct this would imply one of the following:

  • Mastodon gGmbH is lying
  • Official Mastodon client cannot federate comments

@gubi Also to be clear: your iPhone's privacy indicators are about the apps themselves, not the services.

jmaris,
@jmaris@eupolicy.social avatar

@gubi The Mastodon app does not collect any data from your phone, but other mastodon instances take copies of your posts, replies and likes as part of federation. What Threads are saying they are doing is exactly the same.

@gubi Also to be clear: your iPhone's privacy indicators are about the apps themselves, not the services.
