This is a deal saner than most of what's written on representation and the UK Parliament. The points about both the Four Nations and the geographical distribution are well made.
@Edent Re: footnote 4. 1951 Labour won the popular vote by 48.8% to 48% but the Conservatives won a majority. Feb 1974 the Conservatives had 37.9% to Labour’s 37.2% but Labour won the most seats (albeit not enough for a majority).
@owenblacker@Edent I was quite surprised those had stuck in my brain for 27 years since politics A level (full disclosure: I did have to look up the vote share figures!)
February was the first election I voted in, there was another in October which Labour won and they gained a majority of 3, they got the largest % of the popular vote but not by much.
@Edent interesting post, but I think you are mistaken about the latest possible date of the election. The last one was on 2019-12-12, so the latest the next one can be held is 2024-12-12. January 2025 is too late.
@gbxyz The election has to be called (or Parliament is dissolved automatically) 5 years after it first met, which was 17 Dec 19. So the election has to be called by 17 Dec this year. The election has to take place within 25 working days. I think that’s 28 January 2025, Wikipedia not withstanding.
