The French government has banned TikTok in New Caledonia following pro-independence protests.

When asked about the legality of the measure, it basically replied that since the territory is not part of the EU’s jurisdiction, it’s perfectly allowed to ban social platforms however it likes.

What in the colonial crap is this bullshit. For fuck’s sake.

Roman snail dye found in UK for first time.

The chunk of Tyrian purple, which was mixed with beeswax to preserve it, was dug up at Carlisle Cricket Club as part of ongoing yearly excavations.

Those that seriously enjoy King Crimson, others may call them fans, I of course wouldn't accept that, but they are often completists interested in slight variations, novelties and such.

The smart people around DGM have run marketing schemes to satisfy that so I have entire tour recordings, outtakes, etc, etc.

But my completism hasn't extended to splinters that don't include Robert Fripp in some way.

The "Stick Men" are pushing me out of that. https://stickmenband.com/

I’m lost

I’ve just crossed a capital city by train, 3 stops so far*.

Not once been told to mind the gap between the platform and the train.

Not once been warned to not leave behind my luggage.

Not once been warned to not open the doors before the train is at the platform.

Not once been told to label my luggage.

Not once been told to mind the closing doors.

And no one died (as far as I’m aware).

Yousaf is mistaking himself as the problem, they're after the whole Govt. Weariness with a Govt that's run too long isn't just a Tory problem.

simon_lucy,
@simon_lucy@mastodon.social avatar

@spytfyre

There's always a mounting tide the press is part of it, the simple grinding necessities of Govt and then chasing poorly formed ideas is also always part of it.

The SNP might have unique reasons but fundamentally it always ends in failure, no elected governments go out on a high and because of success.

There isn't support for an effective UDI and likely there never will be. Independence evolves to be a policy not the purpose.

simon_lucy,
@simon_lucy@mastodon.social avatar

@alexanderhay @spytfyre

The only test of that is an election, in the meantime every party has their own fantasy.

As the SNP (and I always use SDP these days and have to correct), they now have an external rump in Alba which wants to steal back the clothes of independence. That's more of a threat than Labour even with the peculiar Ash.

grounding practice for RJ45 connector shell (housing) when used with standard cat6a ethernet cables - tie to circuit ground directly, or tie to circuit ground with 470kΩ + 1nF 2kV in parallel like we do with USB-C?

on USB-C the parallel RC termination is essentially ESD-safe AC coupling with a bleeder. but the shielding situation with Ethernet is more confusing. cat5 UTP is just fully unshielded with plastic connectors, whereas cat6a UTP may have outer foil and a partially metal connector.

simon_lucy,
@simon_lucy@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland

https://networkengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/41391/when-is-grounding-a-concern-when-running-cat6a-cables#41393 Ron Maupin's comment gives chapter and verse if it's shielded then it needs the expensive cable tester as well as the right crimper connector combination to ensure ground is maintained. This also applies to Cat 6.

In a dim, distant past I remember just a direct connection but I also remember vowing to only use manufactured patch cords. If it's a copper connection then that's a different ball of wax, I've never had to do an external buried run of cable.

In order to maintain a financial and significant stock exchange environment you need an active trading economy. Because in the end it is a long term Ponzi scheme, you have to keep pumping in new money, new transactions because most of the value is in people's heads, it's sentiment.

External events can affect markets and sentiment and chaotic events just effect them chaotically.

If the charter company the Govt uses to transport refugees is also in the travel business then it's to be hoped their charter holiday flights will be boycotted.

If they use RAF or Naval aircraft then I would hope the Public Accounts Committee would look into it as a misuse of public funds and a diversion of critical military resources (as we don't have that many resources to play with).

Boeing seems to have corporate amnesia over all that.

Ah BBC.co.uk is now fucked because it challenges for a login on the News sub website. I guess they'll have to do all the netpromoter crap all over again.

It was abandoned in 2010 when the reach made in the UK was 70%, I imagine that will disappear now and that they'll also have to let through robots to get on Search pages.

Another nail in the coffin of the BBC Service Licence.

Every time I see any story about how fucked scholarly communication is my first reaction is a) yall know you can just make your own websites right, b) yall know you can just review each others work without a journal giving you permission right, and only then do I arrive at c) ok there are systemic problems but seriously have you considered (a) and (b) and how this is all entirely optional

"You can’t use a single fediverse identity with your profile and followers in Peertube, Mobilizon, WriteFreely, and Pixelfed. You need a totally separate account in each one."

You could create an identity trusted by a common agency, as in certificates issued by CAs and trusted as a chain but that isn't scalable for individuals to generate their own. They have to rely on an issuer so it amounts to the same thing.
