“But it was AI” is the new talking point for the chucklefucks. Pathetic.

recapitated,

The worst part of the world today is that is a plausible denial. But, like other forms of evidence, if it’s not proof positive but it is correct, it may be a strong lead to other information, and at best an invitation for witness testimony. (Not to imply that testimony is reliable)

Habahnow,

And in this particular case, mediaite is in communication with the person that recorded this. In addition, they indicated that there were several other instances of Roger Stone attempting to get this done. Could he even be charged for this? I would hope so, especially if he actually took some steps to getting it done.

Facebones,

Let’s be real Republicans haven’t faced consequences for what would get Dems guantanemo for a long time now. So it’s all pretty moot.

circuscritic, (edited )

I have no problem believing Roger Stone advocated for assassinating two members of Congress, which is also why this is the type of situation where releasing deepfakes would be most effective.

So yeah, it’s absolutely plausible this was AI generated, but Roger Stone isn’t someone I feel deserves the benefit of the doubt.

BolexForSoup,
BolexForSoup avatar

This has always been my biggest concern with deep fakes. Not that they convince people who see them, but that the concept vaguely shields liars when they’re caught lying.

I am a professional editor and I can tell you flat out that even at my best/most alert you could probably slip 20 to 30% of any decent quality deep fakes by me. On a bad day probably 50%. It’s only going to get worse and sew even more doubt. The threat of them is more powerful than their actual effect in many ways.

theodewere,
theodewere avatar

the chuckleheads all talk the same cowardly bullshit over beers

Octavio,

He said they used AI to fake it. I don’t know if they did or not, but I feel like that’s going to be the new, “someone hacked my phone and posted that,” any time someone gets caught saying something dumb.

lennybird,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

The thing is, character matters. I have no doubt Roger Stone is capable of saying those things. Zero doubt.

If someone did this with, say Obama, would anyone believe it?

agitatedpotato,

If someone did this with, say Obama, would anyone believe it?

Oh absolutely, off the top of my head I’d say 20-35% of America.

billiam0202,

You can’t honestly believe that a significant portion of Americans would easily believe such a falsehood, Kenya?

Zaktor,

Roger Stone has also previously claimed deepfakes for things he was recorded saying on video from a professional documentary crew: thedailybeast.com/roger-stone-claims-video-of-him…

He already cried wolf.

Machinist3359,

The thing is AI voices are only good enough to trick most listeners. If you know what to listen for, or can dissect the audio professionally, it's trivial to fact check.

There has always been image/audio doctoring. Any reputable news source can reasonably identify these things.

oce,
@oce@jlai.lu avatar

Until they train the AI against those artificats and it becomes undistinguishable. It either already exists or will soon, no doubt state actors are excited about the possibilities for foreign intelligence.

Jeremyward,

They do adversarial training with those tools. It begins to be an arms race between detectors and trainers… 🫤

squiblet,
squiblet avatar

I've been thinking about that lately. Of course they'll muddy the waters. Trumps 'fake news' bullshit already has, where he acts like major news organizations just wholesale make up stories. The result of deep fakes will be what we already have, but worse, where MAGA types believe anything negative about Democrats, no matter how ridiculous it seems under analysis, and refuse to believe anything negative about Republicans, saying it's 'fake'.

III,

Which in turn allows them to now, more strongly forever deny whatever they want.

So on top of not being able to convince them with facts, you also won’t be able to convince them that the facts are facts… so then how do we pull these idiots away from the cliff’s edge?

alignedchaos,

Facts weren’t the answer for that group to begin with, so not much is changing for them.

billiam0202, (edited )

If they’d just stay at their houses and shut the fuck up, I’d say let them live in whatever false reality they want. Problem is, they’re getting more violent and increasingly believing that they need to enforce their false realities on the rest of us.

Zoidberg,

Can we stop calling these “tape” and start calling them “recording”, please?

kromem,

Does the fact they are called the Panama Papers instead of the Panama Documents similarly grind your gears?

CharlesDarwin,
@CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world avatar

What I find interesting is that this is not being discussed much more prominently. A good friend of donnie’s was talking - to a cop - about murdering Democrats. And not only are the cop and Stone not in prison, but it seems this story has already come and gone.

Even more interesting: I find no mention of this anywhere on the Denver Post, by the way…an outlet accused by the unhinged of being “liberal” all the time. And yet - they constantly skip over stories that put Republicans in a bad light.

imkali,

The irony of censoring the word fuck on that shirt.

shasta,

Yeah why censor “fuck” but not “Trump”?

Maggoty,

So what’s the line for conspiracy to X crimes again?

Grant_M,
@Grant_M@lemmy.ca avatar

For Canadian Lemmy folks:

Roger Stone was the one who installed one of his far right chaos operatives, Paul Alexander into the trump admin to push coronavirus disinformation and undermine efforts to get vaccines to people. Paul Alexander went on to be a key part of the group that attempted to end our democracy in Canada under the cover of the freedum convoy/Ottawa siege. Read more about Paul Alexander here: calgaryherald.com/…/former-trump-medical-advisor-…

BigMacHole,

It’s legal to do this! If it wasn’t Roger Stone would be in jail!

Sprawlie,

WHY ARE THERE ALWAYS TAPES?

😂

trebuchet,

In this case, it seems he was boldly talking about assassinating Democratic congressman in a public restaurant and someone recorded him.

ripcord,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

There’s usually not tapes. But when there are, they’re more likely to be publicly known.

The amount of shit he’s said (in private, at a restaurant like here, etc) that’s as bad or way way worse is probably 1000x more than what’s publicly known. But in this case someone happened to record it, so it got some press.

vinylshrapnel,

They aren’t confessing, they are bragging.

CharlesDarwin,
@CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world avatar

This guy should be rotting in prison.

Vespair,

Whoa, are you telling me that the hateful evil villain guy lied?

Dude has a tattoo of Richard Nixon.

he admired Nixon’s resilience and that the tattoo was a daily reminder that “when you get knocked down, when things don’t go your way, when you’re defeated, you got to get up and fight again. It’s simply that.”

Of course he would talk about it, absolutely would do it too.

kometes,
@kometes@lemmy.world avatar

A daily reminder that he can’t see? Or is it a reminder to whoever is fucking him?

NegativeInf,

Yep. Resignation in disgrace before you could be fired is absolutely getting up and fighting again. Even their fucking heros are massive losers.

captainlezbian,

Idk resigning in disgrace is the most noble way to handle getting caught imo

littlebluespark,
@littlebluespark@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an odd way to spell “seppuku”, but as long as that’s the result here, I’m cool with however you wanna spell it.

reddig33,

So why hasn’t he been arrested?l already? Get on with it. If it was you or me saying this crap, we’d be in prison.

Reality_Suit,

The Republican party is a threat to the US. Trump is a traitor. The people who can’t understand that at this point have a mental illness. Fuck the corrupt Democrats that enable them through their policies and actions.

well this is a crime, and democrats control the entire law enforcement branch of government.

SinningStromgald,

Law enforcement, in all forms, generally leans right of center. What control do you speak of?

Facebones,

Us govt, dems included, leans right of center.

We have zero centrist or left presence in this govt, and it shows.

blazera,
blazera avatar

the Commander in Chief, the Department of Justice. The Executive Branch means the branch that executes the law.

mattw3496,

I assume that the user that you are responding to was probably referring to Manchin, Sinema, and the various old school Democrats that engage in insider trading and the like and refuse to fix such issues in our laws.

In addition to the more extreme examples like Manchin and Sinema who exist as spoiler votes, the majority of the Democratic party also enable the Republican party by constant attempts to compromise resulting in a rightward Overton window shift. Because Democratic politicians refuse to confront Republicans when the latter refuse to engage in good faith arguments, agreements, and debates.

Outside of that, they also tend not use what power they have to do good. Like how Roe v Wade was never codified, even during times when Dems had control of the house and senate.

Theprogressivist,
@Theprogressivist@lemmy.world avatar

I completely agree if that’s what OC was intending. It just seemed his/her comment contradicted itself, and I wanted clarity.

Cruxifux,

Also the ratfucking farce that is the primaries. Along with all the smaller individual cases of corruption that both dems and repubs do constantly.

empireOfLove2,

Like how Roe v Wade was never codified, even during times when Dems had control of the house and senate.

Because that’s part of the cat and mouse game. They can’t fix too many things because they need campaign points on the next election to beat Republicans over the head with. If they actually codified it they wouldn’t be able to use it as a “fight”.

Cruxifux,

The people who can’t understand that make up around half of the voting body of the greatest military power of all time.

Theprogressivist,
@Theprogressivist@lemmy.world avatar

More like 1/3, but your point still stands.

Cruxifux,

That’s why I threw the word “voting” into that one. But yeah, any way you wanna word it, shit looks grim.

GiddyGap,

One part of that paragraph is not like the other.

bigMouthCommie,

liberal democracies are incubators of fascism.

Did you just blame the treason for the Republican party and its supporters on the Democrats? Jesus fucking christ maybe blame the actual traitors? The Democrats could do more, sure, but that’s like blaming the US for not getting WW2 earlier for all the atrocities of the nazis.

MotoAsh,

They did blame the actual traitors. Multiple people can be guilty of different levels of ill. Republicans being disgusting doesn’t magically make Democrats good, just the lesser of two evils. Notice how “lesser evil” is still evil.

That’s important to remember, especially if Trump doesn’t win.

nilloc,

I won’t blame the US for nazis, except Lindbergh and the other US nazis.

Reality_Suit,

No, I didn’t.

highenergyphysics,

Because the only thing worse than a ratfuck fascist is a ratfuck liberal who pretends to be a good person while joyfully aiding the slide into fascism behind their backs

Why are you acting like the US wasn’t a bastion of eugenics and Nazi ideology and was dangerously close to joining the Axis? If Japan didn’t lose their fucking minds and drag Hitler into their war, the US was happy to stay out and keep cleansing their own borders.

What do you think happened to the properties, businesses, and bank accounts of all those nisei they put in camps?

bigMouthCommie,

the Nazis learned a lot from manifest destiny. and got help from IBM. and coke.

america is to blame.

aniki,

Hitler literally wrote about how he was inspired by Japanese internment.

nomous,

Read a history book before you make yourself look like an idiot.
