gregorum,

TL;DR:

  • Starlink kits are being sold and licensed though online stores in Dubai (by Russia, via proxies).
  • They are being used over Crimea. Their use over Russia is disabled, but they work over Ukraine, including Crimea.
  • Starlink obviously knows all of this and could easily shut it down if they wanted to. They have not responded to requests for comment. Nor has the Pentagon.

read the article. it’s a well-written article with lots of context and facts.

Lamest Bond villains ever.

seathru,

Wouldn’t/shouldn’t that give the US government a vector to tap in and intercept said communications?

It's possible to communicate securely over insecure networks, apps like iMessage and Signal for e.g. have end-to-end encryption that are resistant to man-in-the-middle attacks.

I suppose nobody read the article before pulling the "Elon bad" trigger (I get it though). This is happening the same way Toyotas end up in the hands of ISIS. They're being smuggled through all kinds of back channels and the true account user is not the same as the account owner.

I don't think this is one we can fully blame him for. These Starlink systems are just too convenient and useful for a less advanced military to not try to take advantage of it somehow.

Whether or not we can blame starlink is going to depend on how aggressively they're going after them for it. If they're actively trying to shut it down, fine. Something tells me there's going to be a bit of a blind eye turned.

Sentrovasi,

I don't know much about how it works, but will Elon "switch it off" the same way that he prevented Starlink from being used by Ukraine in Crimea? If he has the capability to do so but does not choose to do so, that seems a red flag.

NotMyOldRedditName,

He didn’t switch if off over Crimea, it was never on.

The author retracted the claim he turned it off.

However, now that the DoD is is control of Starlink for Ukraine, I believe it is on over Crimea.

At this point, the only way to prevent Russians from using it is to ensure only dishes sold to the Ukrainian government work in that region by serial number vs any dish, and to maybe require some extra authentication, say a rolling authorization code only given to the Ukranian military?

If Russians capture a Ukrainian dish it’d only work as long as the rolling authorization period then, short of a spy or PoW giving up the codes

partial_accumen,

How about default “off” over Ukraine, and then the Ukrainian government can choose which accounts they want activated?

They were bought through a 3rd party but…they obviously can see where they are being used and by who at this point. Remember when Ukraine had their satellites shut down by HIM PERSONALLY because they were going to use them to organize an attack against a Russian boat? But now that Russia is using them against the Ukraine they keep on kicking.

He is, 100% knowingly, helping Russia and I am not afraid to say he deserves to fucking die for doing so.

ghostdoggtv,

The article says the Russians are using fraud to register the accounts, which means knowingly doing this business is sanctionable and he should be dragged into court in cuffs over this to defend himself.

homesweethomeMrL,

US government needs to slap the ever-loving shit outta him.

Does he understand exactly how he’s fucking this up?

beardown,

The US Government serves Billionaires

Billionaires do not serve the US Government

Which is a terrible way of doing things, but it is what we have allowed to occur

dudinax,

Does the super rich guy understand how colluding with another super rich guy fucks things up? I think so.

Rivalarrival,

The US government is probably telling him to do it, and forwarding every bit directly to the NSA.

TokenBoomer,

Big, if true. Post this on r/conspiracy for some useless karma.

Chainweasel,

Yeah, his defense contracts should be pulled immediately. No more USSF launches or government Starlink contracts.
He’s actively working against US interests and this isn’t treason for the sole fact that we’re not formally at war with Russia.
