BigMacHole,

Fox News told me Republicans have passed the MOST BUDGETS of ANY Congress EVER! I’m Voting for them AGAIN because I’m Fiscally Responsible and Do My Own Research!

DoctorButts,

Can we give the house a participation trophy?

“Congratulations, you’ve barely managed to not totally fuck your job.”

(By which to say, they’re still fucking up. Just not totally)

are we just going to be stuck going with temporary quarterly budget approvals until enough idiot conservatives are voted out of office so the government can get back to, you know, governing?

Bdtrngl,

Yep.

HikingVet,

Yes, you are, or until you decouple your budget from legislation. I don’t see other countries have issues with funding their operation like this. Seems like a way to allow special interest groups cripple you.

@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

looks like you missed the part where the US government cant govern itself, so no permanent budgetary fixes will happen. add to that the fact the democrats are doing everything to conserve everything in place like the conservatives they are.

the united states is over the hill, heading to fascism and picking up speed.

HikingVet,

Why does the budget need to be coupled to legislation? Why is it only the US government that operates this way?

FuglyDuck, (edited )
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

is the US the only country to have the budget set and passed by the legislative body?

IIRC, most parliamentary systems, the budget is proposed by the government, but approved by parliament. This is directly analogous to the process used in the US, where the proposals start with POTUS, going to congress for debate.

Regardless of the details, I think we can all agree that removing legislative bodies from the budgetary process is a great way to create an autocracy; at best, or an authoritarian dictator ship at worse… Which is why in the US, congress has the power of the purse to begin with.

HikingVet,

How many other countries have other pieces of legislation attached to the budget?

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Most, probably.

At least on some level, deals are being struck

HikingVet,

So, you don’t know. And no other country has such a dysfunctional when it comes to their budget.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

The US is far from the only nation with budget fights and dysfunction in that regard. In fact, I would suggest the only nations that never have these fights are authoritarian dictator ships

Looking it up for you because apparently you’re not able to and you’d rather spin a narrative anyhow, It looks like the problem of non-related riders is more problematic than not; to the point that most sources addressing it only bother to mention places that ban non-related legislative riders. From what I can tell Canada, UK, Austrailia and India are all places that allow it in some way.

Sorry, not going to do a deep dive here, because even banning riders, deal making around the budget is a normal process. holding budgets hostage is one of the few ways to get controversial things done… and that’s not an exclusive problem to the US.

Until one party controls enough of both houses they can get everything they want. Or until Democrats control enough that they can force a compromise.

gAlienLifeform,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

Sometimes I think everything that Democratic party leadership wants is just a compromise, regardless of what kind of policy they get out of it

Chocrates,

They are obsessed with Bi-Partisanship. That died with the Tea Party IMO and the dinosaurs just don’t get it.

the democrats are the current conservative party. republicans at this stage are flat-out fascists.

there is no progressive movement left in the united states that can accomplish anything.

DarkNightoftheSoul, (edited )

This is what the 2nd amendment is supposed to be for, and all the fascists who actually have the guns are using them to (masturbate and) shoot up schools and malls and churches and theaters and sports and clubs and events and concerts and and and…

DarkNightoftheSoul, (edited )

Apparently “Fascists are doing mass shootings” is hate speech or inciting violence or something?

mods… I hate fascists. They need to die before they can murder all the queer people and immigrants and disabled people etc. There, I’ve made you honest. You have Actual Justification. Ban me.

,,/,

RagingSnarkasm,

so the government can get back to, you know, governing?

Whoa, settle down there, Mr. Optimist.
