Ffmpeg options is the poster child for why you should spend time, effort and money on design.

And I am a fan of ffmpeg.

FaaS: Ffmpeg as a service, wrap the most used 30 patterns of ffmpeg into a web page and slap a subscription in front of it.

@Migueldeicaza ffmpeg was designed by folks who thought regex was intuitive and trivial (once you understand the obvious logic and a few basic primitives)

VCs? You need to also also on some of that sweet sweet AI

nickzoic,

@erraggy @Migueldeicaza Ffmpeg-GPT.

The only problem with this is it might actually work.

Paxxi,
@Paxxi@hachyderm.io avatar

@nickzoic @erraggy @Migueldeicaza to use AI on it you already need to know all the options to verify or you'll probably end up with a watermark of crypto in your videos 😀

bcamper,

@Migueldeicaza I am not even kidding someone once DM’ed me about their startup to simplify ffmpeg command line options

mako,

@Migueldeicaza basically metube (but add in a sub).

hub,
@hub@cosocial.ca avatar

@Migueldeicaza isn't that what handbrake does?

johnsheehan,
jamesgecko,

@Migueldeicaza I‘ve absolutely seen this for some CLI tool. I thought it was ffmpeg; it might have been ImageMagick.

nholzschuch,
@nholzschuch@piaille.fr avatar

@Migueldeicaza I think that one already exists.

@Migueldeicaza that's what ChatGPT does for me when I need to ffmpeg my shizzle.

Paxxi,

@Migueldeicaza isn't this basically what tools like handbrake are?

    @pepita @Migueldeicaza my memory is that it had some profiles that did a good job of "just working"

    joonaslehtinen,

    @Migueldeicaza not anymore: everyone (with their GPT-4 buddy) is an ffmpeg expert nowadays…

    orj,

    @Migueldeicaza that is basically what https://shotstack.io is.

    @orj shit, all my good ideas are taken!

    So, they shouldn't just slap another option in there every time there is an edge case? Huh...

    slembcke,
    @slembcke@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Migueldeicaza Every time I think “there must be some simple video utility for (thing)”, I spend time looking for one, give up, then spend less time searching for the ffmpeg incantation to do it instead. >_<

    Up toots

    otherust,

    @Migueldeicaza the large amount of similar named options is because of its modularity, each codec has its own set of settings.

    @Migueldeicaza

    I got mad at my cableco and went with Over-the-Air TV for news and basic shows. Digital HDTV OTA sucks up over sixteen GB per hour, because it uses the same MPEG-2 as the early 90s, not even the MPEG-4 that satellite TV uses.

    So I have "hdhomerun" which was invented on Linux, on my Linux server serving out the files with Samba.

    And for most shows, a script FFMPEGs those giant files down to <10% size, by night. At a choice of qualities (15%=Very good).

    It's awesome.

    @DavidNielsen that is good, yes.
