We have phones. They have cpu, gpu, memory, storage and MORE than enough chutzpah to be AI assistants. The Rabbit R1 is a bizarre and repetitive product. I admire big swings, but even this is just an Android phone in Rabbit’s clothing https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145838/rabbit-r1-android-app-pixel-6a

🙋🏿‍♂️It me. I'm one of the vote.org donors that stopped donating after Debra Cleaver was ousted. My help was tiny compared to some.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13250525/Taylor-Swift-backed-Vote-org-crisis-staff-fired-funding.html

Yes, vote.org looked like a glamorous non-profit once Obama and Taylor Swift started promoting it. But that's not what it was. It was an important piece of American democracy. But it was ruined, because someone wanted to have it.

Anyway, Debra Cleaver is an unstoppable force, so she set up Vote America instead.

Holy crap! No, I hadn't seen this, so thank you for mentioning me, and thank you @mekkaokereke, for all you've done 🙏🏻

George and I worked with Debra between 2007 and 2010 at MySpace.

She's truly an amazing human.

Reminding yourself who you are after 18 years of raising kids as they start to become more independent and head out into the world is an overwhelming and introspective process.

erraggy,
@erraggy@hachyderm.io avatar

@shanselman
This process may take even longer than for our own parents too! Because at least for our family living in LA, our twenty-somethings can't afford to move out. LOL

I moved out just before I turned 21, but I honestly don't even have an estimate for when either of our daughters can afford it.

I hate that I'm now a frequent user of ChatGPT. It's not that it's good, it's just that Google has become so unbelievably useless that it's near impossible to get usable results. It's like they've reverted to pure keyword based search. I just get results that (sometimes) contain my search terms, but not relevant to the context of my search.

TIL that Napoleon was 5'2" but not actually short, because French traditional units must be multiplied by 1.066 to get Imperial equivalents, making him 5'6" by English measure, or 1.67m, a respectable height for the age.

Just learned what the user interfaces in the SpaceX capsules run.

The capsules that provide life support for people traveling into space and have to be absolutely reliable.

The user interface that controls an explosion.

One of the most valuable concepts I've been introduced to as a manager is the concept of situational leadership.

The core idea is that people range from motivated to unmotivated and skilled or unskilled depending on the project as opposed to some inherent quality of theirs. So your job as a manager is to assess where they are then motivate or train them as needed.

A corrolary is that the same applies to leaders. People are often strong leaders in particular contexts and weak in others.

@carnage4life
Coaching a sports team also applies. It's a great way to rethink problem solving for a group.

i have this long term project I've been slowly thinking about for years to figure out how to help folks get more comfortable on the unix command line.

I have this sense that there are a lot of people who have been using the command line for 5-20 years but still don't really feel at home there

(not looking for advice, it's just something I'm thinking about)

if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

For my age and tenure in software, I'm embarrassed by my uncomfortableness with vim...
