Everytime I go on Odysee, the content there seems to drift more and more towards conspiracy theories, complete disinformation and nonsense, or at worst ultra racist / xenophobic / hateful rethoric. The staff has a history of just saying amen to everything, including white supremacist stuff.

I’ve been thinking of abandoning it (I would keep PeerTube as the alternative to YouTube for people who really don’t want to use YT). Out of curiosity, a little poll about my content:

sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP don't know why you are on there.

I was done with them when they made those derogatory and juvenile comments on Autism and women on their official twitter over a year ago.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@sageofredondo I stayed because people seemed to like the platform, and I didn’t want to deprive them of an alternative. Now that I’m also on Peertube, I think people who really don’t like YouTube have a better alternative, so I’m not too keen on staying on Odysee

benfuddled,
@benfuddled@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP @sageofredondo Have you ever thought about having a presence on nebula.tv? I admit I don’t know a ton about the sign-up process for creators, but your videos seem like they’d be a good fit there.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@benfuddled @sageofredondo I’m not sure you can join without being invited there first!

@thelinuxEXP

IMO, is only useful if you upload videos directly, without importing from YouTube. It provides an uncompressed copy to the viewers that they can adapt and reuse. It sucks for the videos longer than 5min. In other words, it's as useful as any free cloud solution - you never know how long this infrastructure will live on and what business decisions will end up surrounding it.

realcaseyrollins,

@vintprox @thelinuxEXP One huge perk of IMHO is its support for , as it essentially turns any channel into a video podcast

asahi95,

@thelinuxEXP Odysee was something I was extremely suspicious about, their decentralization approach and other web3 stuff didn't exactly make me excited. This stuff that you just told however now marks the final straw for me :blobcatfluffangry:

I recommend those who use to switch to as that is compatible with the Fediverse and isn't shady about their practices (especially the staff...)

personanongrata,

@thelinuxEXP

Do you know what I do about video content that I don't like. I just don't watch it. Odysse is a free speech platform and free speech shouldn't have limitations. If you don't like the content there, then just create your own frontend to their Blockchain. Abandoning it just makes the platform worse not better.

gregoryopera,

@personanongrata @thelinuxEXP I’m wondering what sort of content these people are following on , if they’re regularly seeing content about white supremacy and unrealistic conspiracy theories… I’ve had an Odysee account since Day One (having migrated from LBRY) and it’s pretty rare that I see a video spruiking white supremacy or unrealistic conspiracy theories. I’ve seen toxic comments from time-to-time, but these are almost always downvoted to the point of being hidden.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@gregoryopera @personanongrata I don’t follow anyone on Odysee. I don’t even use the platform, I only sync my channel here because people asked for it a few years back.

Even without following anyone, every time I look there, the homepage recommands some really weird crap.

It’s not a matter of free speech (which absolutely should have limitations when it’s clearly inciting hate towards certain groups). It’s a matter of supporting a platform I find dubious at best.

gregoryopera,

@thelinuxEXP @personanongrata We are seeing very different things then… My home page is all , / and a little bit of (I haven’t been able to find too many decent gaming channels as yet). I rarely - if ever - see the content you guys are talking about (as I mentioned elsewhere, I do see it in the comments for certain channels I follow - but those comments are almost always “slimmed” / downvoted to the point of being hidden by default).

personanongrata,

@gregoryopera @thelinuxEXP yeah mine too. I rarely see anything racist there. As for conspiracy theory stuff who cares. Seems like some people are determined to hate everything where they aren't protected by their mummy and daddy or the nanny state

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@personanongrata @gregoryopera You’re seeing it from the viewpoint of someone who watches. From the viewpoint of someone who publishes content, posting there automatically associates you with what’s there as well.

It’s basically endorsing the company / platform. I don’t feel comfortable doing that with that type of content being allowed there. It’s a personal choice, though, not saying everyone should feel the same.

personanongrata,

@thelinuxEXP @gregoryopera I can understand your point, although I don't really agree with it. Anyway it's your channel you free to do with it what you like

gregoryopera, (edited )

@thelinuxEXP @personanongrata I mean, to play the “devil’s advocate”, there’s just as much toxic content on … And if you include comments in that assessment, YouTube is actually probably worse than (although I don’t have a account, I can still see the comments). I love your content, but I’d need to take a closer look at to see if it’s actually worth opening yet another account somewhere (the last time I looked, it was a ghost town).

GitThisBugOff,

@thelinuxEXP A very common issue I see when checking out alternatives for websites/services...

limepeep,

@thelinuxEXP Odysee creator here. I don't see the problem with letting these types of people speak, even when I hate many of these viewpoints myself. I just cannot accept shutting people out of the mainstream where their viewpoints can be rightly defeated by better viewpoints, and into echo chambers where they can let their gross ideas fester. In my opinion, personalized algorithms are actually the bigger issue, since their incentive to get users addicted has radicalized both sides towards political violence. The only reason, really, that bigots on the Right fester on many alternative social media sites is that they were the ones to strike first so Big-tech banned them, and that there's a solid chance something similar would happen to the far-left if they were able to better organize their violence. Really, I think Big-tech is the real culprit behind the rising political violence, since they have confirmed these peoples' conspiracies in their eyes and they can use that to establish a coherent victim narrative.

Basically, what I'm saying here is that you should reconsider leaving Odysee. Breaking free from the abusive power of Youtube and Big-tech in general is really important right now, and we need to support the most promising alternatives we have. Odysee is the most viable Youtube alternative currently, with at least a partial nonpartisan appeal and the most variety of videos and art, which means that the large conspiratorial viewerbase isn't even permanent if we push Odysee hard enough.

I'm also sorry if I don't think Peertube is a viable alternative right now, but still. TILvids, which is still really small compared to even Odysee, is the only notable instance, and it doesn't seem like there will be any other instances rising up soon, since the lack of full federation means that all these instances are in practice completely separate websites.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@limepeep I will not reconsider, the channel is already gone. The comments on my post saying I was leaving were horrible enough that I didn’t even want to wait a few days.

As they say, you can’t tolerate intolerance, or tolerance dies. Free speech can’t exist when there is hate, or in the end, all that will be left is hate speech. As per Peertube, sure it’s small. Odysee was never a competitor either :) It’s a matter of having options, not defeating YouTube, this ship has sailed.

personanongrata,

@thelinuxEXP would love to see a screenshot of your homepage in odysse. I don't see any neonazis or white supremacist crap that you keep talking about. Not saying your wrong, just curious

Siucraym,
@Siucraym@mastodon.cloud avatar

@thelinuxEXP I upvote on but use to download all videos from YT and watch offline. The Odysee videos are too big to download. 720p is more than enough for me.

10volt,

@thelinuxEXP most people who use odysee are only there because they were banned from YouTube, usually for a good reason

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@thelinuxEXP
Knowing Odysee and the underlying LBRY is founded by Jeremy Kauffman, and knowing his ambitions (like locking up Fauci and repealing the Civil Rights Act) under the guise of libertarianism, I'm giving all of that a hard pass.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP With PeerTube available as a full channel contents alternative source for those of us travelling Alphabet-free, the reason to lend the channels support to Odysee did indeed evaporate.

    @among Oh it’s not a comments problem. I don’t even read them anymore, everytime I went there to try and see what people were saying, it was an absolute nightmare.

    It’s more a situation of “I really don’t want my videos sitting next to neo nazi crap”

    WohaoGast,

    @thelinuxEXP What is the answer to the bottom answer?

    thecodeknight,
    @thecodeknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP Ever creator I follow if they have an Odysee channel I don't watch them on YT at all. So please keep the Odysee channel. I hate Google, I feel violated every time I use any of their services. Although I use NewPipe and LibreTube, still I want to support a platform that doesn't ban creators because of bs claims of copy right

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @thecodeknight There will be Peertube for that :)

    thecodeknight,
    @thecodeknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP Alright. Will check that out

    charadon,

    @charadon Looks like it!

    irfanhakim,

    @thelinuxEXP im glad ive never bothered checking Odysee out then. but i am curious how do i consume content on PeerTube on desktop/web and also mobile (like people normally would for YouTube)? i remember trying to check it out but was left confused for reasons i dont remember

    @GlowingLantern @thelinuxEXP ahh that makes sense on why i found it confusing, the way it works is very different than how YouTube is. thank u so much for the tip! will definitely check it out

    expertmanofficial,

    @thelinuxEXP I voted with "I watch TLE on Odysee from time to time".

    hen,
    @hen@social.lol avatar

    @thelinuxEXP We ( @techlore ) outright disabled comments on the platform, so at least we didn't have to moderate anything there and waste time on it. So now it's just a backup sync for people who want to use it. If you want a middle-ground option here to avoid needing to open it yourself.

    grax,

    @thelinuxEXP I answered Odysee only but just watch selected creators on there so have no ties and no issue with watching on Peertube

    Xtrems876,

    @thelinuxEXP It was a far-right cesspool from the start. When you announced opening a channel there I sadly thought you just don't mind this kind of folks and left a disgruntled comment

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @Xtrems876 Yeah, I didn’t notice it at first, but it’s ultra obvious now…

    redlilrascal,

    @thelinuxEXP that place SUCKS!

    xoagray,

    @thelinuxEXP What a strange world we live in where the moral ground of a video streaming service is something we actually need to think about. It's awful and ridiculous at the same time.

    mmmgaming,
    @mmmgaming@linuxrocks.online avatar

    @thelinuxEXP The reason why that kind of content is so prominently on Odysee is because YouTube actively discourages it by way of demonetization and banning people for "misinformation."

    I say don't abandon it, mostly because for the life of me I have no clue how to use PeerTube, but also because abandoning a platform because it's host to content you don't like simply because it doesn't have the same restrictions as other platforms seems like a petty move.

    I get that you don't like those kinds of videos, but making a move like that to protest them doesn't really work. Nobody is forcing your audience to watch that type of content and it's not your responsibility to keep them out of it.

    If you're going to pull the trigger on dropping Odysee, make a tutorial video on how to actually use PeerTube. Your last video on it made me aware it exists but I can't find instruction on how to use it.

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @mmmgaming The question isn’t really to decide what my viewers should watch or not, that’s for them to decide, it’s more “if I use this thing, I encourage their policy of agreeing to host this kind of stuff”, and I really don’t feel comfortable with that.

    As per Peertube, if I leave Odysee (which is very likely now), I’ll write a post there detailing the other options, including Peertube and how to watch my stuff there :)

    mmmgaming,
    @mmmgaming@linuxrocks.online avatar

    @thelinuxEXP But you'll happily encourage YouTube's policy of banning people who have an opinion they don't like and invading your privacy? You do you I guess. I'll be looking forward to that PeerTube tutorial. 🙂

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @mmmgaming I don’t happily encourage it, I don’t condone all the practices YouTube puts in place, especially privacy invasion.

    On the content front though? Apart from some weird puritanism, I’m not against the fact they don’t allow hateful rethoric or demonetize content that actively targets certain groups.

    mmmgaming,
    @mmmgaming@linuxrocks.online avatar

    @thelinuxEXP Yet by your argument about Odysee, you very much do condone it. You can't have it both ways. Either you stand on principal and drop YouTube as well or you accept Odysee's lax content policing policy. Otherwise, you have no ground to stand on ethically or morally. The "I don't want to endorse this policy" argument for Odysee doesn't work as long as you're on YouTube while you disagree with their policies.

    Food for thought, have a good day. 🙏

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @mmmgaming I disagree with YouTube’s policies less than I disagree with Odysee’s. The world isn’t black or white ;) And for people who disagree with Youtube 100%, I still have the Peertube alternative.

    lanius,

    @thelinuxEXP That is a sad reality, that every independent platform drifts towards extremism, because this is where all people banned from mainstream ones go. Then normal creators drift away from it, and we end up in a cesspool of social media rejects.
    Answering the question though… I believe I haven’t been on Odysee for like half a year and haven’t seen much of that and I watch on yt.

    mariskus,

    @thelinuxEXP it's a shame that odyssey has become like this but it's probably for the better not to associate with a website that is increasingly more radicalized.

    RyuKurisu,
    @RyuKurisu@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thelinuxEXP oh I voted too quickly! I'm only watching on Peertube! Not Odysee 🤦‍♂️
