Hahahahah. Holy shit.

So Zoom is irrevocably turning their entire network into a training data set: https://hackers.town/@devlogic/110843380784157782

EVERY "public service" company is now attempting to extract value. They're all going for it. They're gonna burn it all down to try and turn AI into a financial exit. Search engines, communication backbones, social networks, everybody.

My read is they're all shit terrified of the impact AI will have and aren't long-term thinkers, so their only short term play is to burn it all down and exit ASAP. Never mind that what they're burning down is, uh, the entirety of our infrastructure. They don't care.

@glassbottommeg it's insufferable to think we're gonna be stuck with this until like 2026 or something when everyone finally recognizes "AI' is a sham

    phanjam,

    @eniko @glassbottommeg AI will help in some areas where they will be a boon, but definitely not in all business function areas, most specially anything customer-facing (cluetrain manifesto). This fevered activity is from just the rats on the ship. Unfortunately, they are the ones wearing the suits...

    AvDemeisen,

    @eniko @glassbottommeg I can't wait for when all those "AI powered" companies go up in flames, I just hope it happens as soon as possible

    Lynnd,

    @eniko @glassbottommeg they all know that AI is a sham. They’re just trying to extract as much money now in the hopes that they can all go hide in their bunkers and yachts when the proverbial shit that they have created hits the fan.

    @glassbottommeg You can tell that this is controversial because there are already phishing sites seizing the opportunity, to 'allow people to opt-out data sharing with Zoom for products of <companyhere>'. I just reported one.

    kenbot,
    mattdkerr,

    @glassbottommeg as we saw with SVB VCs are a bunch of idiots with too much money, it’s just gambling

    @glassbottommeg All the “free” services are monetizing user data. And some of the paid ones.

    Huuu!
    I was almost ready to break down and install zoom. Glad I saw your post!

    The now explicitly own all do you on that platform. Cripes.

    I try to get my friends to use jitsi, but it's a little too glitchy. Any recommendations?

    biptoot,

    @glassbottommeg Looks like their GovCloud TOS haven't been updated since 2019 - I'd be surprised if US 3-letter Federal agencies would be down with this fresh funk.

    @glassbottommeg
    And yet Zoom had such a solid, profitable position as the preeminent online-meeting provider, if they just kept it trustworthy.

    @glassbottommeg Thanks to the Fediverse telling me this, I just stopped my automatic payments to Zoom and deletion of my account is next. I don’t get how they are compliant at this point in the game. 🤷🏽😬

    What, privacy? Leaks training AI. Byebye

    @glassbottommeg their answer is that this is about two opt-in features https://blog.zoom.us/zooms-term-service-ai/

    If course, it’s fine not to trust them, but at least they claim it’s not their whole network, only people wanting these features (meeting notes and something about chat?), and that you have to give explicit consent to that when enabling them.

    Peronelle,
    jafu,

    @glassbottommeg if any organization spends more than 1K per year on zoom for small conferencing, change to FREE + your server hosting, to bigbluebutton. FOSS tool that can support under 50 concurrent users per meeting.

    jillholl,

    @glassbottommeg Thank you. The biggest threat to privacy is giving up on it.

    @glassbottommeg how is this going to work with all the proprietary data being shared?

    They’re going to have to hire someone to sift through this data, which will leak all sorts information!

    Or does this not apply to paid accounts?

    HaelusNovak,

    @glassbottommeg I am a newb to AI thingies, but I had assumed they wanted to sell this training data to companies who could actually exploit it. I always assume it's for a $$$ transaction though, so I'm biased on the best of days.

    Qbitzerre,
    @Qbitzerre@unbound.social avatar

    @glassbottommeg it's merely the next echelon in exploiting harvested data.

    ignus,

    @glassbottommeg is this the dotcom bubble all over again?

    thomastraynor,

    @glassbottommeg If they don't maximize money in the short term then at least one shareholder will sue them.

    @glassbottommeg The only upside is that at my next family zoom meeting I can opt out due to privacy concerns.

    JGuz,

    @glassbottommeg
    I work for a non profit that uses Zoom “phone” they will not switch and now private client interactions will be training their data sets. Cuz privacy schmivacy and HIPAA Shmippa.

    flarion,

    @glassbottommeg wow. that is a huge sh*tshow tbh!

    jaymoore,

    @glassbottommeg at least we still have Teams

    IMO the internet could use an infrastructure reset.

    difficultenglishexplained,

    @glassbottommeg As a teacher, I regularly screen-share textbooks. These are copyrighted. If Zoom sucks up this content and treats it like it’s public domain, the publishers are not going to be happy.
