I immediately get a little exasperated whenever I see someone post about how much we could reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we did this thing or implemented this technology or invest in this research.

I'm going to keep saying this over and over again until people listen: the problem is not, and never has been, a lack of ideas about how to tackle the climate crisis.

The problem is that the people in power DON'T CARE. They don't want to make our lives better. They don't want to solve problems.

And whenever I talk about the people in power, that's not exclusively politicians. Wealth is power in a capitalist system. Don't let anyone convince you differently.

The capitalist class is the thing that's stopping progress, not technology or money or clever solutions. Their wealth and power was gained from exploiting the people and natural resources of this planet. They don't want a damn thing to change, even if it means the extinction of our species and many others.

I would LOVE for there to be an easier solution than a political and cultural revolution, but I don't see how.

Capitalism is not the right economic system to deal with this crisis. Capitalism is what caused the crisis to begin with.

Capitalism needs constant growth. That's unsustainable on a finite planet, and impossible on a dying one. If we want to survive, even thrive, we need an economic system that's resilient and maximizes the welfare of the planet and all its inhabitants.

Maybe it seems impossible. Maybe it is impossible. I don't care anymore. For me, the alternative is nihilism and a bottomless pit of despair. I'd rather fight an impossible battle than die knowing we never even tried to save ourselves. I refuse to give up.

@malcircuit Stubborn optimism, that’s the ticket!

While this is true this is only a symptom and misses the point, these are people we elect to represent us, how they are is a read action on us.

Lets take the UK for example, it would be a different place if Caroline Lucas was PM and she had a majority Green Government. So...why isn't she? what's so appealing about Labour and the Tories, millions vote for then to continue with the destruction ? Deliberately... We know they will and people vote for them anyway?

so what's going on then ? No better insight then from George Orwell

@naught101 What are you gonna use that for? Chopping watermelons? Seems a little overkill

For me, the missing factor in arguments to save the planet is population control. What the Earth needs is a moratorium on human fecundity. No more children for 10 years or some such. In grade school, having to march to the auditorium and hide underneath the seats while the teachers pulled the drapes, nuclear war was the big worry, and remained so into the 1980s when everybody got tired of thinking about it. Now I think nuclear war might be a good thing.

@Threadbane

First of all: there's no fucking way that will happen

Second of all: no

Third of all: fuck you, still no

That attitude will just be exploited by racist fascists to genocide entire racialized groups. Please do not propagate it.

Also, it's defeatist thinking. You've given up before even starting. Fantasies about nuclear apocalypse or global self-control are idiotic when we're already threatened with extinction. It doesn't help anyone.

@Threadbane

You know what are the most effective ways to reduce birth rates?

  • Eliminate absolute poverty (particularly for women)
  • Sex education and birth control (particularly for women)
  • Make sure people have bodily autonomy (especially women)
  • Good healthcare (particularly for women)

If we do those things here, and abroad, population rates will drop.

@malcircuit @Threadbane I love that I’m reading through the replies and I read a poor response and I’m all ready to jump in and … ah you’ve already responded perfectly and dropped the facts hammer. Solid.
