Is there a name for the phenomenon where the general public won't stop mentioning a solution that they /imagine/ will be standard one day without knowing the details behind it?

That's a word salad but like, "plug type won't matter once wireless charging becomes the norm" is, uh, a sentiment few people who know much about electricity transmission and electric vehicles will agree with, yet it's repeated ad nauseum.

InsertUser,

@TechConnectify It's fun how they think there would be just one wireless charging standard.

@TechConnectify Ok, so which standard do we agree on for wireless vehicle charging? :P

leogrun,

@TechConnectify Stupidity I think is the word.

@TechConnectify Idiocy? ;-)

Ash,

@TechConnectify Ah, yes~

@TechConnectify you have a whole video on induction stoves and now you object to cooking cars?

etekweb,

@TechConnectify I'm waiting for EV companies to reinvent streetcars - it's bound to happen if it hasn't already...

@TechConnectify I think this logic is easy to diffuse with, "Well, why aren't all phones only wireless charging?"

psboyce,

@TechConnectify As an electrical engineer the notion that any wireless charging mat will work with any wirelessly chargeable device like magic is hilarious. They'll become Yet Another Standard that ends with cars with manufacturer specific chargers that only work on very specific roadways and very particular segments of big cities, and of course they won't be compatible with each other.

stoey,

@TechConnectify Maybe "wishcasting"? I don't think it's exactly what you describe but it feels close or (at least adjacent).

Anyone believing wireless charging would solve the incompatible connector standards problem forgot about PMA/Powermat.

If you're want to believe in a magical solution for cable-free EV charging why pick slow, boring (and impractical) wireless charging when you could be focusing on the much cooler, quicker (actually workable) option of battery/cell swapping by robots?

@TechConnectify
Feels like the Germans might have a word for this. I like how they call all those bespoke transit "solutions" that are clever but not actually all that applicable and are too few in number to overcome niche-ness with economies of scale: "Das ist eine Gadgetbahn!"

There has to be a German word for what you're talking about.

derrickb,

@TechConnectify We don't need to reduce meat consumption because once lab meat becomes the norm... We don't need to build clean energy because once we have nuclear fusion...

@TechConnectify the worst is when politics use it. Currently in germany: not investing in wind and solar but promoting hydrogen as the solution to everything.

@TechConnectify It's similar to the greek myth of "The Gordian Knot"
Wishing to solve a complex problem with little to no knowledge about it, by executing one unexpected simple solution

@TechConnectify I think "silverbulletism" might be a good term for it. I'd define it as "A refusal to deal with a problem with currently available capabilities out of a belief that a perfect solution is imminent and will render any effort using current capabilities pointless."

@TechConnectify Remembers me on all the people who complain that there is not enough energy for BEV and that we need to use Hydrogen or E-Fuels :blobcatfacepalm:

dreamer72,

@TechConnectify

I think its an assumption laymen have due to technology advancements itself.

Telephones to talk across the country, radio signals, cable TV, portable devices, Bluetooth, solar energy.

So without knowing exactly how these things work, its easy to leap to the conclusion that everything will somehow be charged the magical electric "waves"

kionay,

@TechConnectify why not coin one? The Alec Effect.

@TechConnectify I'll change my name to Inverse Square Law and then you can introduce me to all your friends.

JasonNickel,

@TechConnectify In Germany it could be called Technologieoffenheit (technology openness) which is a word our asshole transport minister likes to use to justify not focusing on electric cars and instead go for synthetic fuels and hydrogen. Probably due to corruption. In itself the word is not negative but now it is.

jlnprssnr,

@TechConnectify Lobbyism. At least here in Germany with e-Fuels, hydrogen, carbon capture, ...

amev7fam,

@TechConnectify What annoys me to no end is how proponents of wireless charging almost always forgets the inverse square law and how it works, and its limits.

There's a reason cable charging will always be superior, much like how wired Internet will always be superior for, ironically, similar reasons.
