Is there a name for the phenomenon where the general public won't stop mentioning a solution that they /imagine/ will be standard one day without knowing the details behind it?

That's a word salad but like, "plug type won't matter once wireless charging becomes the norm" is, uh, a sentiment few people who know much about electricity transmission and electric vehicles will agree with, yet it's repeated ad nauseum.

nader,

@TechConnectify It's similar to the greek myth of "The Gordian Knot"
Wishing to solve a complex problem with little to no knowledge about it, by executing one unexpected simple solution

US Congress is a cozy club of multimillionaire boomer lawmakers hoarding power

There’s a word for this sort of oligarchical rule by the elderly, of course: gerontocracy

nader,

@GW "To be clear: it’s not age in itself that’s the issue here. I have no doubt that some of the octogenarians in government (81-year-old Bernie Sanders, for example) have way more energy than I do. The issue here is the sheer number .."
Okay, let's replace all the multimillionaire boomers with multimillionaire fresh blood yuppies. Problem solved? No. It's combining wealth and power that is the problem, not age, not the numbers.

Update on the little red fridge:

Firstly, I cannot believe the video did that well. Hour-long videos definitely aren't gonna be the new norm for me, but let that be a lesson to those afraid of making long videos.

I intend on making a Connextras follow-up to go over the results of my new sensor placement (which look promising) and address a number of questions/concerns that kept coming up and I didn't think to answer. Such as...

nader,

@TechConnectify congrats! It was masterfully well paced, the longer format only makes it more captivating chef's kiss

This is hilariously stupid. I mean, just painfully stupid. And, yes, it's real.

nader,

@mmasnick "IF" there is someone scraping twitter it'll be probably content farms.

ChatGPT's been publicly available for several months and despite its widespread ability and ease of use, we have not seen:

  • massive shifts in the disinformation space
  • meaningful changes in market dynamics from companies using it over companies who are not
  • at-scale changes in the workforce due to ChatGPT

If these things were to happen, they probably would have happened by now.

nader,

@emilygorcenski I agree on most points, but what about the long-term effects? When it becomes the norm to "ask siri, alexa, cortana, etc." Instead of doing proper research? This new potential for laziness might be the most sinister thing about it. Both for creators and consumers.

If you're transferring your Mastodon account to another server, don't use the "Archive Request" button for transfers.

This button is not used in the transfer process, it's only there for you to download a copy of your data for personal use. The archive produced by this button cannot be uploaded to Mastodon.

There's a step-by-step guide to the full transfer process (including transferring followers, follows, mutes, blocks and bookmarks) at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server.

Watching Citadel on Prime and this show is trying so hard

nader,

@emilygorcenski Amazon is going all in with this mush of a show.
Like I'm not even in the Anglosphere yet Amazon put millions on advertising this show on TV and billboard ads.

  • nader,

@emilygorcenski I think it started with ads, most websites were partially funded by ads and designers standardized some web design principles to easily fit ads to future-proof the design. Horizontal banners on the top and vertical banners on the sides. This was the standard design. Adblockers remove most of them now, hence the empty space. Now ads can be embedded within the content of the website, and banners became old-fashioned.
