"We formed our union because we want to make NYT a better place to work. Yesterday 100+ members took to Slack to tell @meredith_levien and @AGSNYT we’re tired of delay tactics in bargaining. Here is one member's post and in 🧵are a few of the ways management has been stalling.”

“In over a year of bargaining, management has only agreed to a measly 15 bargaining sessions, and hasn’t given our carefully crafted proposals nor our 600+ members the respect we deserve.”

‘On average, the “counter proposals” we receive, management crosses out 76.6% (!) of our proposal language. There is rarely counter language provided. This is a pathetic delay tactic and we demand substantive responses to our proposals and good faith bargaining!’

“It’s time for @AGSNYT and @meredith_levien to take bargaining seriously. That means longer, more frequent bargaining sessions and counter proposals that demonstrate your respect for our unit and our bargaining rights.”

@AG Sulzberger,
Anyone who’s worked on a product launch at The Times knows how fast the company can move when there’s something it wants to get done. And yet, we’ve been bargaining for more than a year with nothing to show for it—if it were a product launch, there would be no shortage of concern about the delays, and we’d have had far more than 15 meetings over the course of the year. Despite management saying they want a deal, their actions suggest otherwise. We the Tech Guild members have done our part by crafting thoughtful, comprehensive proposals and fully engaging in bargaining. It’s time for management to do the same. No more cross outs, no more wasting time with ground rules. We’re committed to reaching a successful contract — are you, @AG Sulzberger, @meredith.levien, @hannah.yang , @jsobel , @alex.hardiman , @kerri.crossan , @ryan.darcy? It’s time to take bargaining seriously. That means longer, more frequent bargaining sessions and counter proposals that demonstrate your respect for our unit and our bargaining rights.
My fellow union members and I have dedicated countless hours outside of work crafting our proposals. We’ve done it all on our own time, sacrificing moments with family and friends, setting aside hobbies and rest, all for the betterment of our workplace, in hopes of seeing the changes that motivated over 80% of us to vote to unionize in the first place memorialized in a contract that meaningfully improves our working conditions. Unfortunately, management has dedicated so little time to bargaining that after one year, we haven’t reached a single tentative agreement. They stall by harping on ground rules solely intended to keep their employees from seeing their shameful behavior in bargaining. They haven’t provided counters to many of our proposals, and the counters they have given us insist on retaining control over every issue, willfully disrespecting the spirit that propelled their employees to unionize in the first place. It’s time to take bargaining seriously. We demand longer, more frequent bargaining sessions and counter proposals that demonstrate your respect for our unit and our bargaining rights.

@AG Sulzberger,
I want to #celebrate our execs on their impressive union dodging skills. Not since the movie Dodgeball came out have I seen such great examples of the 5 D’s: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. As Patches O’Houlihan would say, “if you can dodge a ball, you can dodge a union.” I never imagined it was possible to ignore such a large portion of your workforce for over a year, but the level of contempt management has for its workers is truly impressive! In fact, since negotiations began, only 2.5% of our working time has been spent on bargaining. @AG Sulzberger,
We all had something to on March 3, 2022, when the 600+ members of the Times Tech Guild overwhelmingly voted to certify our union. Since then, there’s been little to celebrate. We’ve had far too few bargaining sessions -- just 15 in the last year. And management’s few counter proposals have been sweepingly dismissive of our careful work in crafting language that represents the needs of our entire unit. Today, we’re calling on company leadership all the way from @AG Sulzberger and @meredith.levien -- who have yet to attend a single bargaining session -- to @hannah.yang, @jsobel, @alex.hardiman, @kerri.crossan, and @ryan.darcy: It’s time to take bargaining seriously. That means longer, more frequent bargaining sessions and counter proposals that demonstrate your respect for our unit and our bargaining rights.
