In time of climate change, skyrocketing wealth inequality, pandemic, and global strife, it's good that the New York Times decided to focus today on what really matters…

checks notes

…unabashedly laundering the reputation of a convicted fraudster whose wide-scale "medical startup" con (enabled in no small part by puff pieces in NYT in the first place) destroyed a lot of trust in medical progress, Elizabeth Holmes.

sigh 🙄

Unrelated: I wonder why people mistrust the . It's a mystery!

nickapos,

@rysiek NYT has done similar things of whitewashing crooks and con people, or printing straight propaganda several times. Apparently they have a price and if you can match it then you are golden.

@nickapos How is media financed?

Looking that up increases worries.

Looking up how those are funded who very loudly call for mistrusting other media creates much worse worries, though …

Communication is a requirement for a working society. Leaving its financing prone to be dominated by a market of propaganda/advertisements does not sound like a good idea.

It’s as old as the printed newspaper, though, so there are some protections in place.
@rysiek

indieterminacy,

@ArneBab @nickapos @rysiek Reminds me of this album from Godspeed You Black Emperor!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanqui_U.X.O.#Background

They did an album with the sleeve-notes featuring 'an arrow diagram purporting to represent the links between four major record labels (AOL Time-Warner, BMG, Sony, Vivendi Universal) and various arms manufacturers.'

@indieterminacy yikes! — but yes … investing in death yields high profits 😠
@nickapos @rysiek

nickapos,

@indieterminacy @ArneBab @rysiek yeah I could say a lot about BBC as well and it’s supposed high standards in reporting. It is no accident that viewership has plummeted in the past ten years.

indieterminacy,

@nickapos @rysiek @ArneBab I agree, although the rot accelerated under the Tories it really was clear with the Hutton Enquiry.

The attempted (not for profit) Channel4 selloff following Johnson being shamed with that ice sculpture.

Thames TV loosing its broadcasting license after producing Death On The Rock documentary.

The use of Christmas Tree symbols to weed out and veto leftwing employees.

The lack of a Republican Correspondent at the BBC (fair and balanced, eh?)

Theres good but pressure
