@mitchw @pluralistic I have about 5 or 6 tab groups, news, hobbies, tech, fitness etc that I usually have open. I also have a separate rss reader, but this is an extension of the news tab really.

Anyone who thinks the route to a just resolution to the crisis lies with a massive fine & compensation paid by is letting the UK's political class & legal system off the hook.

Certainly, making Fujitsu pay is a necessary element to a just resolution but it is hardly sufficient.

The political class' scramble for cover will be masked if we focus primarily on the itself.

There were/are plenty of people who need to be held to account & only a minority are IT folk!

nickapos,

@ChrisMayLA6 Horizon is one of a very long list of failures. It’s the coverup mentality that needs to be defeated not just for Horizon, but for all the public safety/sector failures we have seen the last few years.
Nobody gets punished they only move to their next gig, usually after having pocketed huge bonuses.

As a Yank watching UK news and comedy the last several days I had absolutely no idea what was going on because everyone spoke of an ongoing issue that everyone already knew was a travesty. Private Eye’s editor, Ian Hislop, said that they covered this weekly for years to no avail! A bad accounting system led to UK local postmasters being told they were thieves for well nearly 20 years. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/10/world/europe/uk-itv-mr-bates-vs-post-office.html?unlocked_article_code=1.M00.HDa9.tt0UuU8Ng5tE&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare https://www.indy100.com/tv/ian-hislop-tories-post-office

nickapos,

@glennf hey Glenn, this is most likely a deflection move. Current state of things for the economy and the government is a huge mess so the media found a way to divert attention to this issue.
That is not to say that the issue is not real, but it is at the very least suspicious that nothing happened for 20 years apart from people being unfairly convicted and now suddenly everyone realised the error of their ways.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

nickapos,

@Goldmage263 in Europe gun ownership is largely illegal. You can get a permit but it need to be approved by the police and the gun you can buy is of limited firepower, like a pistol or something like that. You can also get hunting licenses and that is about it.

Having failed to manage a boost in manufacturing (not least of all by inserting friction into the relations with our major neighbouring market), the have decided one thing we might be able to export if .

Today it looks like they will be announcing their intention to legislate for prison terms for any nationality (including UK nationals) to be served abroad.

Of course, this will depend on other countries being willing to take them, so it may be costly (and immoral)!

@ChrisMayLA6 they are pretty consistent trying one stupid idea after another….

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

nickapos,

@const_void because of quality of construction. I have thinkpad a running Linux that are more than 10 years old and all this without vendor support. Being able to find parts even after so many years is also important.Do any of these Linux friendly vendors have similar quality and similar prices?
Whenever I think about getting one of those systems I really don’t know if the company is going to exist in the next few years.

nickapos,

@hungry_freaks_daddy I got some Nike air force that I purchased almost 5 years ago and have used to go to work. They seem a little worn out but are still fairly ok.
I have also purchased several pairs of second hand running shoes, they are all fine and I use them to literally run hundreds of miles.
So far so good with shoes in my experience.

Apple may have fixed some of it CSS display property bugs with tables:
https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257458#c8

However, Safari Technology Preview 174 requires macOS 13+. My 2017 MacBook Air will not upgrade to macOS 13.

It seems the only way I can test Apple’s latest claim is to drop $1,000 USD.

M1 13-inch MacBook Air appears to be my cheapest option. Before I drop coin on this, anyone know if it is possible to force my 2017 device to macOS 13?

@aardrian there is this https://geekflare.com/install-macos-ventura/

In this post I explain why chose as its open standard to support (instead of, say, Bluesky's protocol or Tim Berners-Lee's Solid). Also I look at some of the challenges Meta will face as it tries to join the fediverse. https://thenewstack.io/threads-adopting-activitypub-makes-sense-but-wont-be-easy/

nickapos,

@ricmac hey Richard, nice article. One point though, most fediverse platforms allow people to export their social graph when moving to another instance. I don’t think Meta will be too keen on that.

OC Question: Why are some instances defederating instances which don't sign the fedipact?

Something I don't understand currently about the whole Meta/Threads debacle is why I'm seeing talk about instances which choose to federate with Threads themselves being defederated. I have an account on mastodon.social, one of the instances which has not signed the fedipact, and I've had people from other instances warn me that...

nickapos,

@ZILtoid1991 this can happen today, everyone is scraping fediverse. But as others said we are not that many anyway. Threads got 10 million users in 7 hours

Meanwhile, down on the dragonfly ranch, the house music is thumping, the JS8call console is hot and nation wide, and that makes me feel pretty good about something...

I think it's probably a pretty good philosophy to find things to like about life when we can as we wade into the future, as it's probably going to get pretty fucked, pretty regular.

That being said....I think it is of note that on the two hottest days (on average, on earth) in recorded history, we also had the sun open up a giant hole and retch up a big blob of itself, which it then vomited in our direction at a few million miles per hour. We've been getting bathed in all that (and the various lateral effects) for the past few days.

That shit ain't helpin', J/S.

I'm thinking about getting it together and getting right with my treadmill, in case I gotta get mobile or something. Not that I couldn't now, but it wouldn't be pretty, and you never know just how long you got until you have to deal with/run from some sort of catastrophe.

You know what fucks me up? The fact that several different platforms can seemingly talk to each other seamlessly, even the ones that seemingly were not even meant to talk to each other. Stuff on is visible here on . My account from a instance can see my other account on . There's several different "not-Twitter" services each with their own interfaces and instances, and they all chat with each other. I can feel my brain expanding as I learn all of this.

nickapos,

@Varyag awesome isn’t it? Hello from Calckey

nickapos,

@pizza_rolls this is expected, that is why fediverse is discussing about moderation all the time.

@polygon people have got used to the manipulative toxic mainstream social media and their ads and algorithms, that when they join fediverse or Thread inverse, they rediscover that none of that crap is really necessary and they were imposed on us so long ago that they felt normal. But they are not

📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW)

EDIT: GO DM MODS OF YOUR FAVORITE SUBREDDITS AND POLITELY ASK ABOUT MIGRATION!: something as simple as "Hey, I love this community but I no longer use reddit, will you guys be making a community on Kbin or other alternatives? Let me know please, thanks." will work!! We need more voices encouraging migration!...

nickapos,

@okbin it’s ok, people will gradually move out as Reddit deteriorates. Eventually most interesting people will be elsewhere, the platform will still exist but it will be an empty shell.
The important thing is for threadiverse to take flight and acquire a sustainable size, the rest will happen in time.

nickapos,

@minorsecond i have accounts in both Lemmy and Kbin, and I am writing this comment from my Calckey instance which you will read on the platform of your choice. Plenty of options all around. Lemmy and Kbin will be supported eventually by client apps.

So I’m still getting the hang of the fediverse, and really enjoying my time here. This may be helpful for new people trying to figure out their setup.

-Pixelfed is your instagram: I joined Pixelfed.social since in general I am trying to see how the largest communities play out

-Kbin or lemmy is your Reddit. Again I joined kbin.social, but these communities all talk (or “federate”) to each other so it’s a matter of personal preference if you want to join the main .social or find an alt instance that feels more like you’re kinda stuff

-Mastadon is your twitter (I’m sure there are others, I’m just not a big twitter style person). Honestly I wasn’t a big twitter person anyway, but a cool thing about ActivityPub is you can see things from kbin, pixelfed, etc from any one of them. It’s not always clean but it’s pretty dam cool

I wish all well in their journey across the threadiverse. It really does seem awesome even if it’s taking some time to build up with users and content.

nickapos,

@numbscroll @mizu6079 and pixelfed is for photos.

Android Authority doesn’t get it.

Compared to , sucks. And so does . We all know that.

The isn’t about any app being better than Reddit. It’s about a company that’s grown on the backs of volunteer labour now claiming ownership of that labour.

Reddit didn’t write those posts, draw those illustrations, make those videos. We did.

And Reddit sure as hell didn’t create those communities, nurture them, and moderate them. We did.

I agree with tech writers who say that the average person just “wants their memes”. But Reddit never made those memes. We did.

Content might be king. But who makes content? We do.

I have no doubt that the average person just wants content. But while we might be providing content for free, we’re not dancing monkeys. Who decides why content is made, how it’s made, and where it exists? We do.

The Fediverse doesn’t exist merely as an engine for content. It exists so that people can share what they love.

Why are people coming to the Fediverse specifically? Because we rightfully see ActivityPub as insurance for our content – which, again, is made by and for us.

Not Reddit. Not Big Social. Us.

If I’m giving my content away for free, then so long as it is federated, no one company can own it – putting up gates, demanding payment for my work. Instead, my work is out there, living on 24,000 nodes that presently exist.

Android Authority might dismiss this as “suffering the same fate” – what fate they perceive, I don’t know. But to me, the true “suffering” is when a company like Reddit claims ownership of my work, locking 3rd party developers out from API access.

For this reason, I’m locking Reddit out from my work.

Perhaps the author of this post, Dhruv Bhutani, doesn’t consider that he’s writing for a, well, blog. And that this blog exists on its own domain, with its own design, as its own property. He could have written this entire post on Reddit, but he didn’t.

Why? I suspect it’s because he believes his work has value, and Reddit simply doesn’t give him what he believes is his worth.

Same deal with me. I’m not looking to get paid for my work on Reddit. I do it for fun – always have. But if I’m doing something for fun, it’s still going to be on my terms.

Not all of us creatives are willing to be a cog in Big Social’s machine. That’s why I’m here on the Fediverse right now. I don’t give a damn whether the average person just wants memes. I create for me.

So yeah, Lemmy and Kbin suck. I can live with that – they will both improve. And I have no doubt that, with time, they might prove to be better than Reddit.

But this isn’t about how good Lemmy or Kbin are. Nor is this about the insatiable appetite for memes.

This is about my need to create on my terms – and I’m not alone here.

Decentralization is the killer feature here.

@skye @atomicpoet @fediversenews that’s pretty common in the journalistic world. Lots of journalists joined mastodon for three days, followed no one and expect lots of followers and then quit in disgust. Then proceed to write expert views about mastodon.
