One thing I forget, attending post-2020 Apple keynote events in person, is that everyone watching at home (or watching after the fact) has no idea what garnered applause and what did not. The USB-C announcement got raucous applause from the media section.

@schotanus@mastodon.nl avatar

@gruber Glad you mention the event was live-attended in the first place. I wasn’t aware of that.

I think live events have definitely a different vibe. I miss it. This kind of pre-recorded presentation is just sterile.

andcam,

@gruber I was listening to this week’s Vergecast and they suggested applause came from Apple staff/family/friends and from influencers, rather than the media. Wouldn’t applause from journalists be a bit of an neutrality/integrity issue?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@andcam You’d think so, but I’ve been surprised over the years. The Asian press have a different culture, for one thing. And “influencers” are just “young members of the invited media”.

hoemma,
@hoemma@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber I find the lack of clapping and cheering extremely positive. You never knew how much of
it was just their own employees (especially retail) and I’d rather try to make up my own mind about the information provided and the way of presenting it.

And I also strongly believe that journalists shouldn’t clap or cheer at these kinds of events anyway. But that’s on another page.

hyper,

@gruber I thought the journalists present are not supposed to clap/cheer; has this changed? Or was it a false impression all along?

pikemurdy,

@gruber yeah. I’m sure I’m not the only one to say it. But I miss the live presentations.

alexcox,
@alexcox@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber one thing I miss is when they would do tilts and pans of the audience, and then suddenly went certain feature got announced suddenly the camera focused on a whole lot of Apple employees. I never found it dishonest or anything. It was just a fun way to read the room.

recker5, (edited )

@gruber
Apple often does not do what the users want, but what Apple wants, and needs to be forced by law to get applause.

michaelslade,
@michaelslade@mastodon.cloud avatar

@gruber I noticed this at WWDC23. So cool to hear cheers from Apple employees in the rear. Made me want Atmos binaural sound from the developer’s section in the future.

marc_van_breemen,

@gruber
Really not seeing the “magnitude” of this.

The USA finally adopting the metric system; thát would mean something.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber This is why I still like to go to a local meetup to watch the events. We do our own laugh/clap/groan/gasp in real time.

stuartmarks,
@stuartmarks@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber This is useful meta-information. “Raucous applause” is one thing; “raucous applause from the media section” is potentially entirely another. Presumably there were others in the audience who were not applauding raucously?

GSStamas,
@GSStamas@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber Can you live-tweet groans every time Tim or any presenter says, take it to the next level, stunning, fantastic, gorgeous, remarkable, incredible, the most advanced, and we can't wait for you to try it, etcetera. The terms have almost no meaning any more. Iteration is fine, and I know they have to pump up the excitement, but pre-recorded presentations just makes all the superlatives seem like a laugh track

InterfaceEngineer,

@gruber wonder if a poll is worth having to gather insights if people care for this. I for one don’t care for this & found the keynote constantly paused whilst the audience cheers & clap for something a bit cringey - the fluidity of the video presentation is a huge step forward imo.

rvcx,
@rvcx@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber This gives a lot of color to your comments about the events being attended by non-tech (or at least non-Apple) specialists.

There are people who’d cheer for USB-C, and then there are people blown away by, eg, Swift. Different crowds.

I care about the reactions of the latter far more than the former.

waltman,
@waltman@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber Interesting. And these were the same folks who then turned around and wrote articles about how the average iPhone user was going to hate having to buy new cables?

foobarsoft,
@foobarsoft@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber now that you mention it I do miss hearing audience reactions like the old keynotes. But I’d never thought about it.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

Makes me think I should live-tweet applause / reactions here in the future.

@gruber some sort of Applause-O-Meter knob like from Simpsons S8E14

@gruber I don’t mean this to sound snarky or disrespectful but, honest question:

Why would we at home care if a few hundred people somewhere else applauded at a given section?

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber someone should build an Apple Watch app for the attending media people that records and reports the decibel levels in realtime 🙃

chockenberry,
@chockenberry@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber But yeah, this would be a good bit of info.

chockenberry,
@chockenberry@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Would be hard to sync up with the live stream. You’re living in the future at the event.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@chockenberry I’m thinking shorts posts like “Lots of applause from media attendees for the USB-C announcement.”

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber @chockenberry Can you convince sports fans to add the same detail to toots and tweets please?

“What a catch!” means nothing in a social media timeline disconnected from context.

chockenberry,
@chockenberry@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber 👍

"Dead silence during game demo.”

CraigBrennan,

@gruber @chockenberry “Audible gasps as the price of the Pro Display XDR stand was announced”

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@CraigBrennan @chockenberry Exactly. That was an interesting reaction!

@gruber +1. really enjoyed seeing this over the years. Heard iCloud storage was a big win too this event.

@jimray@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber I presumed you’d be live-casting from your spatial computer from now until you retire? I want these things in GruberVision!

@gruber you definitely should. We had no idea. Please do next time!

kennysabarese,

@gruber Stream an applause-o-meter over the stream!

@gruber laugh track would do for remote event
