Unity is a dead man walking.

Will take a couple of years, but their leadership killed the product.

Never seen any business decision this epically stupid.

@Migueldeicaza I've thought about this a lot over the last week. Riccitiellio has always been a proponent of the shadiest and most repulsive forms of monetisation and last year he sealed Unity's fate by merging with IronSource. It's like injecting poison into your veins. Now Unity's got a thousand more people only thinking about shady ways to monetize everyone and everything. They're in the offices, on the board, prominent amongst shareholders. There's no recovering from that.

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@col000r damn. This is exactly right

slimehunter,
@slimehunter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Migueldeicaza @col000r it's actually worse than this. If you look at it from their perspective it's a brilliant move. Get the bonus payments from the mergers, tank the company, and write off a big tax harvesting loss for multiple years, rinse and repeat and go to another company to start the process all over again.

@Migueldeicaza Nokia and Windows?

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@almad true Nokia/Windows also had a few bad ecosystem moments. Like them announcing a new device, followed by “new windows but won’t run on that device”.

That felt more like corporate incompetence.

almad,
@almad@fosstodon.org avatar

@Migueldeicaza I don’t know, to me the whole move to Windows ecosystem fet like an ex-MS exec malevolence. I don’t think the Nokia downfall was inevitable.

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@almad hype is powerful.

@redalemeden@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza Per-install fees is something I personally never heard of in gaming or otherwise. It's ludicrous beyond belief and makes me wonder what dimension the execs live in.

paulocesar,
@paulocesar@mastodon.world avatar

@redalemeden @Migueldeicaza it’s not that uncommon in corporate SDKs, like Scandit, which is quite expensive

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@paulocesar @redalemeden it’s ok to experiment and sell in whatever way you see fit.

The issue with Unity is that they changed the license, but they also changed it after they extensively promised not to, so people invested their money on a platform based on those assurances and terms.

paulocesar,
@paulocesar@mastodon.world avatar

@Migueldeicaza @paulocesar @redalemeden oh, I’m not saying I agree with Unity guys, I totally agree they are doing a speed run on how to ruin their own business

I was just commenting that charging per install is not unheard of.

redalemeden,
@redalemeden@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza @paulocesar The way I see it is that companies will never hold their promises since they are not legally bound by them. But if you’re changing your business model, at least do something that makes a sliver of sense and won’t ruin your customers.

paulocesar,
@paulocesar@mastodon.world avatar

@redalemeden @Migueldeicaza shit, I just remembered I'm completely locked into Apple ecosystem and got kind of scared for when a terrible CEO takes over the company eventually

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@paulocesar @redalemeden we need to make sure Unity’s CEO doesn’t fall upwards into that role

paulocesar,
@paulocesar@mastodon.world avatar

@Migueldeicaza the worst part is that this is not as impossible as it would appear to a logical person 😅

cicloid,

@Migueldeicaza So people migrate to Godot? or what else is out there?

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@cicloid lots of other engines. Godot is useful if you like full IDEs workflows, but there are also commercial and open source alternatives

acdha,
@acdha@thepit.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza given how many iOS apps depend on them, I’m wondering when Tim Cook writes a check out of petty cash. If they wanted to expand into gaming more it’d build a previously-inconceivable amount of goodwill.

sankao,
@sankao@mas.to avatar

@Migueldeicaza

It’s sad, but it’s part of a pattern. Basically the value of what was built before is meaningless to the current management and shareholders. It’s worth it for them to gamble it hoping for a 10x payoff.

PeoriaBummer,

@Migueldeicaza @ncweaver They didn’t just ruin the product, they ruined the COMPANY! Their reputation is permanently destroyed. Who would work with them now?

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@PeoriaBummer @ncweaver exactly: never seen so much value destroyed - ok maybe Elon did it too

ncweaver,
@ncweaver@thecooltable.wtf avatar

@Migueldeicaza @PeoriaBummer
Elon is taking a lot longer: the problem is that fleeing Shitter is a collective action problem. Heck, I had to do some read-only checking today. But the interest payments will eventually do it...

So yeah, in terms of velocity to zero, Unity's whole Darth Vader routine has it beat.

Migueldeicaza,
@Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social avatar

@ncweaver @PeoriaBummer the one thing they have in common: a macho attitude: “I know better and I can ram this through”

ncweaver,
@ncweaver@thecooltable.wtf avatar

@Migueldeicaza @PeoriaBummer
I think it is a defect on the Y chromosome that causes some dudes to never go "whoops, I was wrong"...

PeoriaBummer,

@Migueldeicaza @ncweaver Elon has made a series of bad decisions over the course of a year. Riccitiello has made one spectacularly terrible choice and then doubled down over and over. It’s incredible!

@Migueldeicaza I would 100% agree, but after seeing the reddit saga, I wonder what it takes for these companies to die and if their decline looks like we expect it to.
