I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a thousand times: If the punishment for breaking a law is a fine, then that law only exists for the poor.

killick,

@Strandjunker
"There is one law for rich and poor alike, which prevents them equally from stealing bread and sleeping under bridges" - from Jo Walton's book "Farthing," but I think it's a translation from another work.

NoctisEqui,

@Strandjunker

Succinct and true. This is the first time I’ve heard it put so well. I hope it becomes painted on walls, made into memes.

rebel63,

@Strandjunker re: fines for speeding offenses

  1. for a long time now, technology exists to remove the ability to speed, via GPS & speed governors. The fines exist as a means to garner unregulated / no oversight taxes, nothing to do with public safety

  2. speeding substantially increases likelihood of serious damage or death, speeding should be equated to attempted murder

If you were caught speeding & were charged with attempted murder, you'd think twice wouldn't you?

@Strandjunker People that don't agree with this either don't understand math or real life or both.

rebel63,

@Strandjunker if people steal to eat / live, they dont need punishment, they need help.

Chaingang, Nina Simone,

I committed crime Lord I needed

Crime of being hungry and poor

I left the grocery store man breathing

When they caught me robbing his store
....

I heard the judge say five years

On the chain-gand you gonna go

I heard the judge say five years labor

I heard my old man scream Lordy, no!

I always think of this song when I hear of someone "convicted" of stealing to live.

@Strandjunker Unless the fine is proportional to your income or net worth — it should hurt everyone equally.

caycedo,

@Strandjunker looks like there could be a fallacy. Does that mean there is no good fine?

JohnLoader6,
@JohnLoader6@masto.ai avatar

@Strandjunker and if a company is fined no director loses a penny. Network Rail fined for safety accident so have less money for safety work

Are you aware the State of Illinois ended all cash bail Monday?
Most of the jailed are awaiting trial, because of cash bail.
In Illinois, this is over. @herbsti72

GreenMazza,

@Strandjunker So true, especially traffic related ‘infringements’ the wealthy have it all stacked in their favour, where ever is the ‘level’ playing field in democratic societies? Why does it seem that all is pushed aside or turned around to suit the few wealthy/power hungry people?

MBridegam,

@Strandjunker

So fortunate, then, that licensing, employment and credit problems also follow from so many minor convictions.

@Strandjunker kind of the point of these ‘laws’ ☝️ . The American poet laureate /prophet 50 cent had it right ‘get rich or die trying’

NovemberMan,

@Strandjunker 👍💯👍

markvonwahlde,

@Strandjunker Yeah. Minor campaign contribution violations...only for the poor. Whatever...

@Strandjunker Very true! Except in those countries where fines are proportionate to income.

bison,
@bison@mastodon.social avatar

@Strandjunker i am fine with a fine, but it should always be coupled to the monthly income and/or the total "value" of a person's assets (in whichever form).
If a fine doesn't inflict the same punishment to everyone, then it's just for poor people.

ShredderFeeder,

@Strandjunker we used to call them speeding permits.

Dammit, I should have known someone would beat me to this response!

maffia,

@Strandjunker in Finland the fine is related to income

TheMNWolf,

@Strandjunker if they want fines they should make them means tested and then watch how much the rich people shit themselves.

recker5,

@Strandjunker
In Germany the fine is heavily dependant on your income.

@Strandjunker instructions unclear, parking violations now punishable by hard jail time.

@Eka_FOOF_A@spacey.space avatar

@Strandjunker Fines need to proportional to net worth. Edit: Thinking more about this, income would be better. This is because of retirees and farmers.

der_schneewolf,

@Eka_FOOF_A @Strandjunker you mean, so the poor poor privateer who is not working because of the millions on his account is not paying too much? 😉
Net worth is definitely much better then income

duncan_lithgow,

@Eka_FOOF_A How about the punishment being the loss of time benchmarked on networth and adjusted for hardship considerations. So a seeding infraction for a poor mother might mean server dinner at a soup kitchen once a week, three times. The same infraction for a rich f***r could be two weekends of community service. Just something I'm thinking about.
