First day on land! We went to Sankei-en in Yokohama. Nice park with lots of historic buildings.

Middle of the Pacific and we pick up this hitchhiker that likes to poop all over the deck

Close up of the bird, it’s a booby.

Leaving SF, we’re getting a send-off from a fire boat. Next stop: Hawaii!

We're looking to add a two-wheeled to the family and there is soooo much choice*.

Somehow I keep coming back to this excellent machine though. It can fit an entire kindergarten but also works well to get rid of diapers or do forestry stuff!

(we'll probably end up with something else)

*well, I guess is out ;-)

@Pepijn @mastobikes This seems like the sort of thing that should exist in NL: a dealership of just cargo bikes with lots of different brands, so you can go test-drive them all. We have a subscription with Cargoroo, so I have experience with Urban Arrows (they're great!), but that's it.

Smoke alarms work by making sure you can’t die in a fire because you already died of a heart attack when they went off 😖

Oh no, “This is not Amsterdam” is also being used in Dutch cities to stop attempts to reduce car traffic 🤦🏻 https://www.volkskrant.nl/binnenland/het-is-nog-even-wennen-in-het-autoluwe-centrum-van-sneek-we-willen-de-stad-meer-lucht-geven~b721f3b9/ @notjustbikes

I've fallen into "No Man's Sky"! I made it to the space station, and have selected an avatar that truly resembles what I look like... on the inside.

I now have a glowing ball for a head, which seems to be held in place by rotating electromagnets. Magnificent!

was created for PC but the adaption (which I'm playing) is not at all bad. It's really... quite... addictive. I played for 4 hours and I'm eying my battery and wondering if I could hop on for a few minutes... before... bed...

@elizabethtasker Is this working now? I’ve been wanting to play it and tried a few months ago (I have an Index) but it wouldn’t start a game so I returned it.

In Dutch the acronym for spectrum disorder is ASS. I can mostly handle this, but every now and then my therapist puts up a picture like this and I burst out laughing, and then I have to apologize for being an 8 year old.

@elizabethtasker @EverydayMoggie Let’s not do this with Facebook, though. Honestly, this is old tech. My friends and I were flying the Enterprise in Star Trek Bridge Crew (at that point an old VR game) throughout the pandemic, and the game loads you into a seat at a conference room table, where we would chat for a bit before the game. Graphics and design were much better. And I’ve heard the media touting Meta’s safety features, but Altspace launched with better in 2015.

Dear Dutch politicians: As politicians you are in positions of leadership whether you like it or not. You do not get to pretend to be a wind vane being blown about by public opinion. You help form public opinion, and your choices, statements, and actions have consequences. If you choose to go into a coalition with racists, you are telling people, as leaders, that racism is ok and that racist acts are ok, and we've seen around the world what follows.

I thought I might go to Utrecht today to do a little shopping. I guess I should have checked Sinterklaas’s schedule first because he’s also coming to Utrecht today. The city is packed with strollers and small humans in funny hats 😑

My pharmacy is having problems acquiring Dexamphetamine and are offering me (the more expensive) Attentin instead.
Anyone had experience with the latter?

@actuallyadhd

holly,
@holly@v.st avatar

@Richard_Littler @actuallyadhd Looks like that is a brand of atomoxetine? That's a completely different medication -- it's not even a stimulant. It only works for a small minority of people with whereas stimulants work for 80% of people. It also take a month or two to start working. If they feel comfortable giving you a completely different medication, surely they could at least offer you a different stimulant, like vyvanse, adderall, methylphenidate, branded dex like Tentin, etc.

holly,
@holly@v.st avatar

@TristanB @Richard_Littler @actuallyadhd Yeah, when I tried it I lost interest in everything except sitting on the couch. Apparently when it works it really works -- but when it doesn't, well, yeah, it really doesn't

Why is it when you put a bunch of sheets and pillowcases in the dryer with a duvet cover, the duvet cover swallows everything else in the dryer and rolls it all into a tight ball so after a full cycle nothing is actually dry?

Early observation of the effect of Star Trek-style "teching the tech" from Two Years Before the Mast

“Thousands read the escape of the American frigate through the British Channel in The Pilot, and the chase and wreck of the Bristol trader in The Red Rover, and follow the minute nautical manoeuvres with breathless interest, who do not know the name of a rope in the ship; and perhaps with none the less admiration and enthusiasm for their want of acquaintance with the professional detail.”

I am going to be an asshole here, but honest to God, if putting on a mask to make others safe (or even to make them feel safe) for a fucking hacker conference is a step too far for your "anti-authoritarian" sensibilities, then you have absolutely demonstrated that the German hacker community is no community at all and have justified every reason I had to flee it.

YES, YOU ARE THE ASSHOLE.

Please, give me your hot argumentative takes so I can block your asses.

And GROW. THE FUCK. UP.

@lostgen @grrrr_shark @AhaAchja That’s the reason to put in a rule. People who aren’t wearing them because of peer pressure won’t need to feel like they’re compromising their cool — it’s the rule, so I have to wear it 🤷🏻 I swear if someone brought a booth with black disguised kn95s and called them anti face recognition masks most of the con would probably wear them. But not if it’s to help others.
