One interesting thing I haven't discussed about the future of the Internet: now that it's mostly consumed on a small number of sites controlled by a smaller number of companies, AND we're getting to AI that can detect and regulate content, are things going to get a whole lot more g-rated?
@ZachWeinersmith I fear so, given how it's already happening to YouTube, and even more aggressively with TikTok. And that fucking KOSA bill will make it exponentially worse if it passes.
@ZachWeinersmith Not if more people realize that the web is still a place where anyone can set up their own site or service easily and communicate through federation.
They like to keep the shocking, "dirty", and awful stuff around. They use it to keep us anxiety ridden and scattered/angry/disgusted with our neighbors instead of looking at them with love and empathy.
@ZachWeinersmith I have definitely noticed a trend of algorithms-based self policing in language (things like using the word "unalive" instead of dead or kill) even in places where it doesn't matter and nobody cares. Places outside of TikTok
It's not inevitable that the internet continues to be held by monopolies. Accomplishing this could be a limited-time opportunity.
Getting AI to regulate content to reduce porn would likely require higher moral reasoning to accomplish its objectives without too many unintended side-effects. Humans and organizations comprised of humans usually hate using their capacity for moral reasoning for practical purposes, and avoid it as much as possible.
@ZachWeinersmith Tiktok makes heavy use of algorithmic moderation so it might make sense to look at them to see what the future will be
I don't use the platform but I know that their users have a tactics that they use to avoid getting de-prioritized or filtered by the algorithm with varying degrees of success. Stuff like writing things as "de@d" rather than "dead"
We might not be headed for g-ratings but rather a system that you have to try to work around to discuss anything not g-rated
